The XC 40 is nice but a little small could use a bit more range.
Fancy LED headlights are expensive in general, it is doubtful there is much extra cost with these - especially since Volvo tend to make things pretty practical. Also the potential extra cost is gonna be offset by the savings of having that sensor bulb, rather than sensors being integrated with the wind shield. The later makes a wind shield replacement something complicated and much expensive than it used to be.
5:27 what a smooth brain solution! The customer has to replace the windshield wipers with these specific washer nozzle equipped blades! The vast majority of cars use a universal blade, but not this Volvo. Between the wiper blades and needlessly motorized headlights this is certainly not a car to consider owning. Lease maybe, but the warranty is very much needed.
I have faith in Volvo in most aspects except for its multimedia and control system. I'm usually a good adapter to different cars, I just couldn't get a hang on the Volvo system. I had a road trip from Amsterdam to Paris few years ago and S90 was the only type of car left within the booking grade at rental. For 8 days, I never got used to it, and I doubt I ever will.
It just looks so damn good inside and out sheesh. It’s a masterpiece. We not talking about maintenance cost lmao. Honestly if you can afford this car, you probably don’t even care about maintenance cost 😂
I really don’t understand how a car with one single button can be more comfortable and safe to use then a car with normal buttons that give you a feedback without having to look at it like in a screen! 😳 this is crazy
Absolutely all hopped on then Tesla wagon. It looks hideous as well but more importantly as you mention, not half as good to operate as buttons. Who on earth needs that size of vertical!! screen in the car?
Not sure if you have driven a modern Volvo. I had a 2018 XC90 top end. As much as I hated the touch only , no button operations, once you set it up, the system was intelligent to realize the driving conditions. For example , be,ow 40F the steering heat, seat heat would come on. Initially high and auto reduce to lowest level. Climate with air ionizer and humidity control was fully automatic like any modern day lux cars. In summer if it was too hot the sunroof shades would close automatically. Automatic Hugh beam control, active bending and cornering lights, heated windshield wipers that did not spray water but flowed through holes in the wiper stalks minimizing splash, fluid wastage etc. the B&W system was simply outstanding. Plus all these settings customized and linked to each key and the driver including infotainment, radio preferences. So whoever had the customized keys, got everything pre done and ready. Surprisingly there was very less to mess around with the touch screen.
@@dgdave2673 I worked for car rental companies for 7 years I’ve driven almost any new model of almost any brand and my opinion for a driver buttons are always better then screens in term of feedback and more then everything you just watch the road! I did not hear Doug mention if this vehicle offers a shade. Another thing I wonder about is on a Tesla when the glass windshield goes right into the roof what happens if you get a cracked windshield, does that mean you need to replace the entire roof? That sounds expensive.
I can't help but to think how the used car market is going to look in 20 years. These are likely going to be disposable vehicles unless battery replacement tech seriously drops in price.
That's the best case scenario for auto makers. Going electric absolutely screws the middle and lower class. We will be forced to purchase new cars every 8-12 years and most of us can't afford a new car. It's not good in my opinion.
I'm very skeptical about EVs What about the millions of people who don't have a driveway. How are they suppose to charge these? Are apartments going to fund putting charging stations all over the parking lot? Then of course aging. I need my car to last a minimum of 20 years. How sustainable is it to build millions of these every year for decades? I know innovation happens. But I not sold.

I have this on my V60 Recharge. It’s wonderful and really upgrades the interior.
@@onlythebest3311 Leather being considered luxury is very American. It’s easier to find 1980s Mercedes S-class with cloth or velour seats in Europe than with leather. Later leather became more common but I have a feeling it’s far more common in the US. Considering that you can get Mercedes and BMW models with cloth seats here in Europe.
We love the attention to detail that Volvo put into the EX90.❤
Sadly, Volvo isn't a Swedish company anymore as Doug mentioned 10:25 . It's Geely from China.
No. Volvo is both a Swedish and global/multinational company which is owned by a Chinese company. Volvo has their headquarters in Sweden but also has teams literally cross all continents. Volvo isn't Geely, it's owned by Geely. There is infact a difference.
I hate this take, yeah, they own a lot of Volvo, but it is still a Swedish company
The wool seats look so comfy and cozy
Congratulations on the new partnership/investment and I would love to see what comes from it.

Doug the type of guy to show us a center storage area strap the same way he'd show his date a great time. 17:42
As a lifelong Volvo owner & enthusiast, it is disappointing that the company is completely phasing out gas cars.
I think that backseat had a built in center booster seat, which works great btw, and is really handy
It’s come in handy in our xc90. It was my wife’s only stipulation when we bought it.
Anybody else find the irony in sustainability eco friendly seats but the absolute destruction and pollution required for the lithium batteries.
How about the cruelty of using children in the Chinese owned colbalt mines in the Congo. But Volvo is owned by the Chinese and controlled by the CCP.
Or bragging up the sustainable materials in a disposable vehicle. Those seats will look great in a landfill in 15 years.
It's going to be a tough choice between the EX90 and the Polestar 3. Not a tough choice for me but for the ones who have the money for it.
Those headlights are really cool
I’m not a fan of those large tablets. I’d rather had a smaller screen and some physical controls below. It’s a nice car but I’m wondering why they haven’t come out with an all electric XC 60 as that would seem to me to be a more popular size. The XC 40 is nice but a little small could use a bit more range.
It's in the plans but 2 to 3 years away. I'll have megacastings. The next one is the ECX30, smaller than the XC40. Will be shown in June.
one can only imagine how much it will cost to replace those headlights if anything were to happen to them ...
❤
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how Daddy Doug traveled into the future just so he could review this car for us. Well done sir.
Is that BYD in Cars and Bids ad?
It just looks so damn good inside and out sheesh. It’s a masterpiece. We not talking about maintenance cost lmao. Honestly if you can afford this car, you probably don’t even care about maintenance cost 😂
Everyone else is showing the Mazda CX-90, but not doug. lol
Nobody likes these dumb touch features. Yet that’s what every manufacturer is doing. Everyone wants actual buttons.
Screen need to be watched a button can be up or down and your finger can do the job! Eyes on the road ahead!
Big Volvo Vibes 🇸🇪
I like the idea of just the two switches. I’m always lowering the back windows by mistake
I would like to know how the battery is kept warm in Alaska. We have engine block heaters there so we can start our vehicles in the winter. Generally, all batteries are completely drained of all power.
I like the two button window control setup. I seldom roll down the correct window the first time. a toggle switch would prevent that embarrassment.
Still a shame we're departing from buttons to big touchscreens. Just look at a phone after a days usage... Hope ya like cleaning.
Besides, there's been a study where changing Various settings, like ac, radio, settings etc. Is still quickest and least complicated in an old Volvo. I miss the cute little t9 pad in the 2nd gen Volvo v40's and so on.
80k for a car is insane
you will own nothing and be happy (and only be allowed to buy EVs that track everywhere you go and only let you go there when your credit score is high enough)
@@killacamfoo lay off the drugs bud
I hope Doug would talk more about those cameras facing the driver. Do you send your data/images to som cloud? Is all computation done inside the car all he time? Privacy?
just thinking of the INSAME repair costs for all these EVs makes me say NO.
The trick headlights are awesome 😊 until they malfunction 🫢 love the design ❤❤❤❤ nice clean crisp lines 👍🏾 fantastic review as usual ☺️
I work at a Volvo dealership, and I am so looking forward to selling these. Right now our electric car selection kinda sucks, and it is going to be fantastic
The C40 looks good though....
I love all the glass roofs on these newer vehicles, but I wonder how much heat and light they might add especially in warmer, sunny climates. I did not hear Doug mention if this vehicle offers a shade. Another thing I wonder about is on a Tesla when the glass windshield goes right into the roof what happens if you get a cracked windshield, does that mean you need to replace the entire roof? That sounds expensive.
whats going to happen when you flip over in a wreck and your glass roof explodes?
Once Thor's Hammer headlights, now Iron Man's Eyes headlights.
I can’t believe we didn’t get video of Doug trying to get into the third row!
Mazda CX-90, Doug's the only one not doing it.
Yea and I think it's because he thinks that hybrids suck...
I'm very skeptical about EVs
What about the millions of people who don't have a driveway. How are they suppose to charge these? Are apartments going to fund putting charging stations all over the parking lot?
Then of course aging. I need my car to last a minimum of 20 years.
How sustainable is it to build millions of these every year for decades?
I know innovation happens. But I not sold.
I expect economies of scale will make battery replacement cheaper, just like EV cars.
nevermind the eletric and battery part... even if this stuff gets better and easier to maintain/replace, they're making every car nowdays like they made super luxury cars 20 years ago... in 2040, all 2020's cars will look like what a 2000's S-class looks today... we all are going to be Hoovies
in 2040 i'm 100% sure we will still be able to find XC90s from the early 2000's on the road... this model on the video i'm not so sure
@@baronvonjo1929 I park on the street. Even if I could park in the driveway at my house, it's infeasible to run power to the driveway side of the house without tearing out the driveway (that we just replaced) or tearing out half the walls on the first floor. There are no outlets at my office. I'm not going to sit at a public charger for an hour every few days when I can refuel my car in five minutes and be on my way in just about every human settlement on Earth. Probably the best thing to do is get an early 00s truck because they're modern enough for daily use and parts will be around forever.
Including the interior dimensions is a really cool touch!
How do you flash your headlights during the day? Seems like it'll take too long for the headlights to come out
its nice but 80k for that, mmm I would buy the BYD Tang for 45k instead
Leather is completely sustainable. When did it not become so? Front end (excepting the headlights) could use some more design interest?
Leather is also boring as hell, generic black leather makes even a Bentley look like a Camry inside.
@@cenciende9401 I would agree. Black doesn't do much for the senses. It just recedes into the background. But, what fabric would you utilize?
I was wondering that as well, leather is a renewable resource and in abundance.
@@marclangman4836 Leather tanning uses a ton of harmful materials that need disposing of plus cattle raising obviously needs tons of water, crops and cows fart and burp a ridiculous amount, I think those are the main arguments against leather
I really wish auto journalists/reviewers would stop focusing in horsepower and torque and instead focus on efficiency and or range.
Not much choice but to make that pivot once it’s all EV show.

16:30 I'm glad that this car has these sensors to prevent hot car deaths. I think all cars need to have this feature.
Was there any range predictions for the two models
No tactile controls? Pass.
Absolutely stunning design inside and out. Scandinavian minimalism at its best. Beautiful and clean lines all around. Taillights next to the window are very 2008 Focus hatchback. I still don’t like this trend of putting hubcaps instead of real rims!
I really like how automakers are packing so much usefulness into fully electric vehicles. Electrification is the future.
