Really glad the Volvo has a frunk. Makes me mad seeing behemoths like the BMW iX without frunk capabilities. Hope Tesla and Volvo (and others) continue to push for this. On other aspect, I'm curious to see how this car will last in terms of longevity. Volvo claims to have green ambitions, but EVs are effectively disposable cars, not made to last a long time. I wonder if this could last 10 years, for example, with all the bells and whistles this battery needs to power.

@@bwofficial1776 exactly, i hate the fact leather is considered luxury and standard on expensive cars, they are sticky and uncomfortable in summer, and cold as hell in winter. Cloth seats are so much better, glad Volvo went with it.
@@onlythebest3311 Leather being considered luxury is very American. It’s easier to find 1980s Mercedes S-class with cloth or velour seats in Europe than with leather. It’s a nice car but I’m wondering why they haven’t come out with an all electric XC 60 as that would seem to me to be a more popular size. The XC 40 is nice but a little small could use a bit more range.
We need cheap electric cars without all the luxury... Something around 15-20k with a good range and none of the connectivity, driver aid, fancy lights or LiDAR stuff... Just a car. How come that doesn't exist?
Love my volvo and love this new EV version. Will definitely be upgrading but am a little concerned about the door handle being right in front of the window button. How are those not going to get confused?
I work in Volvo and we are very excited at work for this new model, there’s a lot more to expect for the production car👀 you should make a video about the C40, that’s another cool electric car🔋🇸🇪
If you work at Volvo tell them (a) no space for a spare wheel is a dealbreaker. Why does the front trunk space have to be kidney-shaped, when it could be shaped to let an owner carry a spare wheel if they want to? (b) not everyone wants three rows - do NOT make them non-optional. I want the storage / load-lugging space. (c) utterly typical of today's driver that the only physical button is for twiddling with sound system, and that the one thing I will want to adjust while actually driving - the climate controls - seem to demand I play with menus and touch screens... and there I was, thinking Volvo was safety-minded. Not any more, it seems.
Hello! I have a 22 S60 and love it. Had a 21 V60 Polestar Engineered as well. Stunning cars. The new EX90 looks excellent, with the exception of the needlessly complicated window switch. 4 switches are always preferred to 1 or 2 there. Other than that, looks great!
But that's a chop-top XC40, a very familiar car. This one is all-new and moving in Volvo's new direction. The c40 isn't bad though and a move to RWD is a good one.
The headrests don't look movable. Is that the case? Because every Volvo I've ever sat in has been extremely painful after just a few minutes because of the horrible headrests pushing my neck forward. I won't own a car that I'd need a sawzall to cut off the headrests because they aren't adjustable.
I think it looks absolutely sick. We own an XC90 and absolutely love it. It s a shame I won t be able to afford this one. In Canada, it ll probably sell for more than 100k when taxes and others fees included .
Still a shame we're departing from buttons to big touchscreens. Just look at a phone after a days usage... Hope ya like cleaning. Besides, there's been a study where changing Various settings, like ac, radio, settings etc. Is still quickest and least complicated in an old Volvo. I miss the cute little t9 pad in the 2nd gen Volvo v40's and so on.
I can't help but to think how the used car market is going to look in 20 years. These are likely going to be disposable vehicles unless battery replacement tech seriously drops in price.
That's the best case scenario for auto makers. Going electric absolutely screws the middle and lower class. We will be forced to purchase new cars every 8-12 years and most of us can't afford a new car. It's not good in my opinion.
I'm very skeptical about EVs What about the millions of people who don't have a driveway. How are they suppose to charge these? Are apartments going to fund putting charging stations all over the parking lot? Then of course aging. I need my car to last a minimum of 20 years. How sustainable is it to build millions of these every year for decades? I know innovation happens. But I not sold.
nevermind the eletric and battery part... even if this stuff gets better and easier to maintain/replace, they're making every car nowdays like they made super luxury cars 20 years ago... in 2040, all 2020's cars will look like what a 2000's S-class looks today... we all are going to be Hoovies in 2040 i'm 100% sure we will still be able to find XC90s from the early 2000's on the road... this model on the video i'm not so sure
@@baronvonjo1929 I park on the street. Even if I could park in the driveway at my house, it's infeasible to run power to the driveway side of the house without tearing out the driveway (that we just replaced) or tearing out half the walls on the first floor. There are no outlets at my office. I'm not going to sit at a public charger for an hour every few days when I can refuel my car in five minutes and be on my way in just about every human settlement on Earth. Probably the best thing to do is get an early 00s truck because they're modern enough for daily use and parts will be around forever.
Fancy LED headlights are expensive in general, it is doubtful there is much extra cost with these - especially since Volvo tend to make things pretty practical. Also the potential extra cost is gonna be offset by the savings of having that sensor bulb, rather than sensors being integrated with the wind shield. The later makes a wind shield replacement something complicated and much expensive than it used to be.

@@tres311 what does that have to do with my comment? Yes Geely has controlling interest, but they’ve sold off substantial amounts. They saved the company while retaining the fabulous engineers.
It just looks so damn good inside and out sheesh. It’s a masterpiece. We not talking about maintenance cost lmao. Honestly if you can afford this car, you probably don’t even care about maintenance cost 😂
Volvo, like many manufacturers nowadays, is attempting to implement systems such as LiDAR, which is widely regarded as a poor technology. LiDAR is expensive to operate and maintain, meaning customers will have to pay significant amounts every few years for repairs. Additionally, in the event of a car accident, the value of LiDAR is nearly equivalent to that of the entire car. LiDAR is ineffective in inclement weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or fog, as it cannot "see" through these conditions. Conversely, RADAR continues to function in poor weather, as LiDAR is incapable of penetrating such elements. This past weekend's extreme weather in Southern California demonstrated that a system like LiDAR would be a poor choice for self-driving or traffic awareness. LiDAR also necessitates multiple sensors, more than RADAR, and consumes significantly more power. Lastly, it is unattractive and cannot be integrated into the car's dashboard or front-end; it must be installed on top of the vehicle. The expense of implementing LiDAR is astronomical, as roughly $23,000 of the car's total cost is dedicated solely to this technology. While Volvo may have chosen to incorporate it to distinguish themselves from Tesla, the EV community widely acknowledges the inadequacy of LiDAR.
All this talk and nothing about performance, mileage etc. this video was a total waste of time. Sorry, it’s the truth Doug- we want to know facts about the machine, not just design narration.
The previous XC90 looks better. And “people have been wanting an electric family suv.” Yeah right. Taking a 3 day road trip would turn into a 6 day road trip with all the times you have to charge. EV’s are an illusion.

@scottnatte1345 you realize Volvo was one of the automakers who started the whole giant infotainment screen when the 2nd gen xc90 came out right
Ok, Im 5 minutes in and I can already tell those windshield wipers are going to be trouble.
Adding that end sprayer into a consumable component is surprising. I guess owners won’t be buying new wipers from the local automotive store.
Everyone else is showing the Mazda CX-90, but not doug. lol
This vehicle has the coolest headlight design in the industry. No contest.
I agree!
At this point in time yeah probably
I thought I've see every headlight design there is, but the Daytime Running Light opening up to expose the headlight is kind of cool.
Imagine what a nightmare this thing will be out of warranty.
Nice
Waddup bro. We made it. 1 and 2
Damn we did lol
This Volvo is perfect in every way. The headlights, switching from regular headlights to running lights, is mind blowing. I'll probably get an EX90 when I want to replace my current car.
As much as I hate retracting door handles I'm glad volvo put that lip there as I will always default to using that lip instead of the electronic
It happens automatically when you unlock the car, what are you gonna do not unlock it?
@@cenciende9401 Still though, in the case the handle motor broke it won't be the end of the world for this car. I love the little redundant design like this.
$70K for a 6-wheel Jeep? That's over $10K a wheel.
I'm starting to think Volvo should just go out of business at this point.
Anybody else find the irony in sustainability eco friendly seats but the absolute destruction and pollution required for the lithium batteries.
How about the cruelty of using children in the Chinese owned colbalt mines in the Congo. But Volvo is owned by the Chinese and controlled by the CCP.
Or bragging up the sustainable materials in a disposable vehicle. Those seats will look great in a landfill in 15 years.
Whats wrong with leather surely its puting a dead cow to good use hmm
The blink of the headlights probably took 1 mile of range 😉
Sorry but I find this car as exciting as my new dishwasher… can’t stand that “minimalist” interior it looks like a luxurious hospital room. I’m sure I’m the minority and Volvo is right and this car will be a success but for me it has absolutely no soul.
It really pisses me off when you review a prototype vehicle. These types of vehicles are computers on wheels and you can not even review the tech. Doug, are you becoming the marketing arm of these companies?
Congratulations on the new partnership/investment and I would love to see what comes from it.
what
@@yeahnoway111 watch life of palos video. Doug will be receiving a 37 million dollar investment into Cars & Bids.
@@yeahnoway111 😂😂
Those wiper blade refills will be expensiiiiiiiive.
I really wish auto journalists/reviewers would stop focusing in horsepower and torque and instead focus on efficiency and or range.
Not much choice but to make that pivot once it’s all EV show.
As a lifelong Volvo owner & enthusiast, it is disappointing that the company is completely phasing out gas cars.
So no windshield wipers? Or will you have to navigate through several touch screen menus every time it rains?
Big Volvo Vibes 🇸🇪
I hate ev's ☹
Me too! I only drive manual so. . . I know, I’m that guy.
Just spoke with EV’s. They don’t like you either … 😢

Don't care
What I love about Volvo is that they are distinctive, and still have character. So many other car manufacturers fail at this, but I wouldn’t mind having this be what I drive. It’s fun and unique looking, which are two things that I look for when buying a car
Once Thor's Hammer headlights, now Iron Man's Eyes headlights.
For those wondering what the teaser car is: It’s a BYD Han, a Chinese sedan
80k for a car is insane
you will own nothing and be happy (and only be allowed to buy EVs that track everywhere you go and only let you go there when your credit score is high enough)
@@killacamfoo lay off the drugs bud
At 2,800 kilos (or 6,167 lbs) it's heavier than a full size pickup truck.
I'm so glad that they have the luxury wool interior. Would much rather have a high end cloth than fake leather
Me too. I hate leather. Burning hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter, doesn't breathe and your back gets sticky. Give me breathable warm soft cloth. There's a reason why the Toyota Century comes with wool.
@@bwofficial1776 exactly, i hate the fact leather is considered luxury and standard on expensive cars, they are sticky and uncomfortable in summer, and cold as hell in winter. Cloth seats are so much better, glad Volvo went with it.
Hahaha
I have this on my V60 Recharge. It’s wonderful and really upgrades the interior.
@@onlythebest3311 Leather being considered luxury is very American. It’s easier to find 1980s Mercedes S-class with cloth or velour seats in Europe than with leather. Later leather became more common but I have a feeling it’s far more common in the US. Considering that you can get Mercedes and BMW models with cloth seats here in Europe.
Mazda CX-90, Doug's the only one not doing it.
Yea and I think it's because he thinks that hybrids suck...
I’m not a fan of those large tablets. I’d rather had a smaller screen and some physical controls below. It’s a nice car but I’m wondering why they haven’t come out with an all electric XC 60 as that would seem to me to be a more popular size. The XC 40 is nice but a little small could use a bit more range.
It's in the plans but 2 to 3 years away. I'll have megacastings. The next one is the ECX30, smaller than the XC40. Will be shown in June.
We need cheap electric cars without all the luxury... Something around 15-20k with a good range and none of the connectivity, driver aid, fancy lights or LiDAR stuff... Just a car. How come that doesn't exist?
They are coming soon enough
It's going to be a tough choice between the EX90 and the Polestar 3. Not a tough choice for me but for the ones who have the money for it.
I had a 2004 XC90 and now own a 2021 XC40! This most likely will be my next car! Love Volvo! Excited to see the next review!
And only 100 of them will be sold
Love my volvo and love this new EV version. Will definitely be upgrading but am a little concerned about the door handle being right in front of the window button. How are those not going to get confused?
I work in Volvo and we are very excited at work for this new model, there’s a lot more to expect for the production car👀 you should make a video about the C40, that’s another cool electric car🔋🇸🇪
Does Volvo accept feedback on their software? I’m in some trouble with it after an update on my 2018 xc60
I'm very skeptical about EVs
What about the millions of people who don't have a driveway. How are they suppose to charge these? Are apartments going to fund putting charging stations all over the parking lot?
Then of course aging. I need my car to last a minimum of 20 years.
How sustainable is it to build millions of these every year for decades?
I know innovation happens. But I not sold.
I expect economies of scale will make battery replacement cheaper, just like EV cars.
nevermind the eletric and battery part... even if this stuff gets better and easier to maintain/replace, they're making every car nowdays like they made super luxury cars 20 years ago... in 2040, all 2020's cars will look like what a 2000's S-class looks today... we all are going to be Hoovies
in 2040 i'm 100% sure we will still be able to find XC90s from the early 2000's on the road... this model on the video i'm not so sure
Those headlights are really cool
one can only imagine how much it will cost to replace those headlights if anything were to happen to them ...
❤
Doug you missed an easter egg! =) the built in booster in the second row center seat there is literally a latch in front of it and it turns into a federally approved Booster "the bench option" it is super with kiddos, we have it in our 2019 XC90!
I rushed to the comment to type the same thing... I guess Doug is a different bred from other car journalists...
The trick headlights are awesome 😊 until they malfunction 🫢 love the design ❤❤❤❤ nice clean crisp lines 👍🏾 fantastic review as usual ☺️

Would love if they offered an extra long version of this car. Would really improve the use ability of the 3rd row of seats.
A longer version is coming, ex90 excellence
@@erikbuiten14 reading up on the Excellence model. It looks like its just a 4 x seat luxurious version of the standard car. It doesn't seem to be longer?
Those are usually only available in China, they have the bmw 3L, 5L, etc..every model of most brands have a L version
Volvo has been stepping it up for awhile now. Also really cool that US market examples will come from the South Carolina plant!
Fuck that.
They’re Chinese owned now…
@@tres311 oh no 😂
@Nettin Yoo-hoo So is Lotus. I'm slowly coming to a point where I'd be down to buy a Chinese subcompact just to dick around in for shits and giggles and to see wassup. China's sneaking products in despite the bans and tarrifs by manufacturing incomplete products in places like Vietnam and then finishing it in China and sending it off with a "made in vietnam" tag. I wouldn't be surprised if the Vinfast cars from Vietnam have no small amount of Chinese EV tech and, more importantly, Chinese financial backing.
Doug is the kinda guy who publishes ES90 review when every other car channel is releasing their Mazda CX-90 video.
The previous XC90 looks better. And “people have been wanting an electric family suv.” Yeah right. Taking a 3 day road trip would turn into a 6 day road trip with all the times you have to charge. EV’s are an illusion.
Hands down the best headlight I’ve seen this decade.Audi usually was the best in my opinion, but my god that headlight and DRL is fire 🔥.
80k car with plastic wheel covers and fake leather seats in the name of aerodynamics and eco-friendlyness. That´s quite a genius way of saving money on Volvo´ś part. I was kinda expecting Doug to pop off the wheel covers and reveal steel rims underneath :D. I guess Volvo´s marketing department doesn´t allow Doug to do that.
It seems the word luxury is just being bounced around to any car manufacturer. This is just like Mazda .. a premium brand that goes against brands such as Infiniti , Buick , gmc , bmw, etc
I think that backseat had a built in center booster seat, which works great btw, and is really handy
It’s come in handy in our xc90. It was my wife’s only stipulation when we bought it.
Imagine the car asking are you sure you want to lock the doors when you thought you were alone
And then you get your final surprise in life from the 3rd row 😰
