I remember hearing the animators talk about how on The Lion King, despite going for realistic movement in the animation, they still incorporated squash-and-stretch, but to a lesser extent, because of the organic feel that it gives the animation. I also think it acts as a surrogate for motion blur, which of course you don't get in cel animation, and that's why it registers as normal to our eyes. I was working on a dub of a 3-D animated cartoon and was surprised to notice there wasn't any motion blur, but there was squash-and-stretch, and that was providing a similar visual experience. I found it interesting because of course you can save rendering time if you're not using motion blur.
