I love treasure tables. In fact, I have my own that I've used for years. Each table has 100 treasures, for a d% roll. So, we have things like: * Random Barrell/Crate (negligible value, random items) * 10 gp average * 50 gp average * 250 gp average And so on...basically, half the table is the average valued items. The lower 25% scales down in value and the upper 25% scales up in value. Rolling 100 always scores an awesome find!
Watching this entire encounter was so very helpful! I am going to begin my first game ever next month and have been watching videos for the past 2 months about gameplay, and this one clarifies so many doubts I had about running an encounter! Thanks a ton for creating and running adventures like this! All your videos are amazing! 😍❤️
Glad to have you with me! I am working on the next video in the series currently. If you are following me on Facebook (Esper - Community of Novaura), I just uploaded a map that will be featured in the next chapter.
Decided to watch this again, totally forgot about the one line Vargarot says, "...I did tell them, beech!". Every time he says "beech!" just gives me a nice little laugh, because it's just something I don't expect an NPC to say. Being that you are all done with the book, really gets me hopeful for more of these stories in the future, now that you can focus on doing these again!
That's right, i realize that you must spend a lot of time and resources preparing the set, but i admire that you know how to grab in a fist the substance and throw it on the tabletop along with the dice !!! I'll be in touch and thanx for your answer ! Master Fistandantilus.!
Absolutely, and thank you for being a part of the channel! I would say my style is simple yet complex. I do spend a good amount of time on world-building and creating the backdrop for characters and stories, but I also believe in the freedom of improvisation and spontaneity. No te preocupes, tu Ingles es magnifico!
Hey I'm here after watching the mattheios adventure and just found out about this! Wow! Its gonna sweeten the waiting time until the new episodes :D Thank you!
Esper, i wanna really thank you, for sharing this wonderful adventures. It relax me a lot to watch them while i prepare my sessions. I begun with Eldritch castle and i enjoyed the rawness and simplicity of your work. It is teaching me how to cut to the chase and in a simple way reach the thrills of high fantasy. I'll be in touch with you from Argentina. Sorry for my english and if you want me to comment in spanish, tell me so you may practise too.
This is an awesome dramatization! I really like how you do the spectacle of the game with the nice maps and miniatures and the voices of all the characters. I also liked how this encounter started with a little mystery -- a single figure in the dark -- and then gradually built up to get worse and worse with the trap, then the second and third monsters. It is interesting that the their questioned whether she should join the battle or loot, but in the end she wound up jointing because her life is at stake here (she needs that book and probably can't get it alone!). I like how she got separated and the carrion crawler went after her but she outmaneuvers it. Then you flash back to the main battle in the room. Awesome job -- do more of these! The one thing I am wondering -- all of these characters want that book, but there is only one book. Since they don't know each other well, are they going too fight over it at the end? If I was that their, I'd be backstabbing the other two and taking that book because she needs it more than either of the other two, and that seems to be her nature considering she is a criminal type rogue. I guess I'll see in the next one.
Yes, it is a mixture of D&D itself, art, and demonstration. In some of my adventures (the long series), the viewers also vote on what decisions the characters make.
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass - just found this and thought, Hankerin with his badass drawing (and dancing) skills would like it. xD how about a mapping video btw? I already copied your world map styles. Im the worst with ink and could use some easy tips. (like the second lining for outer walls like Esper does here)
Esper... Im so glad you put up a video like this. It really illustrates how I would imagine you running a game with other people. Of course you are role playing everyone, but seeing how you would describe the successes or failures of a roll, and still leave it a little ambiguous and vague is just great! You are able to stay in story telling mode the whole time. I'm guessing you are reading from a script that you wrote. Things you do like: "he clearly favors being near the sarcophagus" instead of what I would do is just blurt it out with no tact, is a great learning tool! Question. I've noticed you play this story in turns. 23:40 you would tell her part, and then jump back to the action, like it was the other characters turn. Is this similar to how you run your encounters? I havnt seen all of your vids so I'm not too sure
Mark Abrian Thank you very much, Mark! These types of adventure videos are somewhat how I run a game with other people, though I also consider them making art out of roleplaying games. Sometimes, descriptions are better left vague, and sometimes the details are important. Yes, combat encounters are ran in a turn-based succession.
Thank you so much for this video. That was more entertaining to watch than all the live action D&D movies combined. How long did it take you to put this together? It can't have been easy.... Again, thank you for an excellent half hour of fun. We are definitely going to watch Part II. :-D
Sean Anderson You are quite welcome! Ah, I must sigh at the thought of the flawed D&D movies. You are correct in that this was a big project, and it did take quite some time. Yet, time is a strange thing when I am in my creative realm. Enjoy the rest and all the other videos of mine you check out.
Heh, I know a thing or two about creative ventures: www.ryuxchunli.com It took me two years to make the online book at the link above. But, yes, you are correct. When we create, time loses its hold on us and there are only our goals. :-D Thanks again for such wonderful videos. Please enjoy my book in return. :-D
Dude if you were my DM, I'd buy you a whole pizza. Awesome descriptions/voice acting/interest keeping techniques. I've been watching your vids for a long time and they have helped me become a better dm. Do you plan on making any other videos on DnD Next? I'm just curious as to how other experienced DM's feel about it. I watched a series of 8 videos explaining the core mechanic and comparing/contrasting different editions and commentary. Very informative. Hope you'll do another!
As amazing your your story telling is to make us feel like we are truly there, it was the roll of the dice that scared me most! Like the cock of a gun! ❤
My gratitude, Dante. The acid might have been able to eat away at the webbing. A DM could decide between: A. The acid is only potent enough to harm flesh (it doesn't bother the stonework, after all); B. The acid weakens the web restraints, which grants the subject advantage on checks to escape it; C. The acid deals its damage to the webbing whenever it strikes the target (in this case, you would need to come up with a hit point value for the webbing, say like 10 or 15).
Thank you! I ran this adventure for some friends at home and recorded the audio with the intention to create a RUclips video. Well, the group's mood was off, and they just did not seem to get into the adventure. I had put a lot of effort into it, so I decided to remake it on my own ... and here you have it.
Hey Esper! I wanted to know where you get some of your figures, the two Valosa family members mainly I love collecting and I can't find them on Amazon. Any info would be great ty!
Please tell me you are making a second one. As a new DM I need all the help I can get and I love all of your videos but especially the combat ones. Make more please!!!
I never played 4e so no idea what it was like but i did play 3.0 and 3.5 DnD and Pathfinder to me was the same game with a few minor changes. I also never read the magazines so its not a big deal to me what they did to it. I do not play a game due to a magazine I play to have fun with my friends. I never even buy anything past the core books. I prefer to make up my own adventures. So to me it is all about the system not ethics of a magazine. I just got 5e and love it. And the fact you can down load the rules for free is awesome. Thats pretty damn ethical to me.
I have been asked this question a number of times, and I have addressed the topic to an extent in a video. Basically, I created my own mod of D&D 3.5, called "Legendscape." My friends and I played this for a number of years, multiple times a week, with campaigns stretching for months. When Pathfinder came out, its appeal to me was rather limited, because I already had my own "3.75" system. My group and I were ready to try something new, so we played 4th edition.
Lvl 80 storytelling and voice acting. Nice!
I love treasure tables. In fact, I have my own that I've used for years. Each table has 100 treasures, for a d% roll. So, we have things like:
* Random Barrell/Crate (negligible value, random items)

* 250 gp average
And so on...basically, half the table is the average valued items. The lower 25% scales down in value and the upper 25% scales up in value. Rolling 100 always scores an awesome find!
I remember this was the first D&D video I saw. man, the nostalgia
Watching this entire encounter was so very helpful! Thanks a ton for creating and running adventures like this! All your videos are amazing! 😍❤️
Thank you too, I wish you a great first adventure and many more!
Haha I was so excited when "Burn" by the Cure started playing. One of the most underrated songs ever.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU !! For making such a fun adventure! We had a blast playing this! Your awesome!
Thank you for joining in the adventure! As always, I have more adventures coming out.
@Charles Lafon This is my world of Novaura, which is the setting for my home games, as well as my novel and short stories.
Now this is super cool! I was wondering why people haven't done this yet. Glad you're the one doing it, Esper.
Glad to have you with me! I am working on the next video in the series currently. If you are following me on Facebook (Esper - Community of Novaura), I just uploaded a map that will be featured in the next chapter.
Dude, this is inspiring as hell. Great job, glad to see your back and better than ever. :)
I am glad to be back in action! The Tomb of Blacktongue adventure leads into some more recent D&D 5e videos, enjoy!
it's good to see you're getting back into these, and i hope there are more parts to come.
Decided to watch this again, totally forgot about the one line Vargarot says, "...I did tell them, beech!". Being that you are all done with the book, really gets me hopeful for more of these stories in the future, now that you can focus on doing these again!
Rewatching this just reminds me of how good your art really is. It is truly a masterpiece.
That's right, i realize that you must spend a lot of time and resources preparing the set, but i admire that you know how to grab in a fist the substance and throw it on the tabletop along with the dice !!!
I'll be in touch and thanx for your answer !
Master Fistandantilus.!
I really dont know anything from D&D, but i must say i really enjoyed this video, and nice work with the voice acting!!
I have no idea how I missed this series. Excellent job on them Esper.
Absolutely, and thank you for being a part of the channel! I would say my style is simple yet complex. I do spend a good amount of time on world-building and creating the backdrop for characters and stories, but I also believe in the freedom of improvisation and spontaneity.

Hey
I'm here after watching the mattheios adventure and just found out about this! Wow!
Its gonna sweeten the waiting time until the new episodes :D
Thank you!
Great :) Enjoy the adventures!
The nightmare sequence was brilliant, and the rest was amazing as well. As a DM, this is as inspiring as it get!

Much appreciation, and yes, you can expect more to come!
Nicely done, love to hear/see what else you've come up with...
oh man thanks for having the first shot D&D vid on youtube. I can never get through the long ones.
this is awesome ! Keep it up. I Dig The setting . fantastic stuff
Man, this shit is legit. Very impressive, and I don't say this often. Great GM skillz.
I wish you would do these again.
@Charles Lafon: This is my own campaign setting, Novaura.
+Esper the Bard I bet it is a great fantasy world.
Esper the Bard is this a solo play?
Yes, it is a mixture of D&D itself, art, and demonstration. In some of my adventures (the long series), the viewers also vote on what decisions the characters make.
I was looking for a video like this for long time, love it.
Man. This video will be 10 years old this year.
That's like a grandpa in youtube years.
Just found you! Awesome channel..your hand-drawn ink maps are sic as hell! Spartan Sub'd!
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass Thank you!
Very few tubers directly show the content of the hobby in a clear, fun, honest way. I salute you.

yeh yeh!
I love the blacktongue series. More please.
very cool idea, great job
Welcome back. That was brilliantly done.
I love these, I want to do recaps like this for my players!
I'm very happy to see these back!
Girls and tentacles? Sounds like a good time.
Ronald Gargoyle yea
Oh god
I like to hearing woice and sounds when you play like a film. :)
Very good encounter as always!, Glad to see them again!
Gracias, amiga! Me alegra que disfrutaste la narracion.
This was so intriguingly, perfectly done.
You're the only narrator I would approved to read Drizzt to me. ツ
Great job man. I wish my narrative skills would allow me to DM my encounters like you. Subscribed.
I think a beholder should join the party and be called Roger. Certainly would make a very unique adventure.
You're making me look bad as a DM, Esper. Amazing.
I am so happy you got me into D&D! Thank you so much!
"I told them, Bitch"
Well... as undead as they seem to be they sure have a modern way of communicating.
Esper... Im so glad you put up a video like this. It really illustrates how I would imagine you running a game with other people. Nice one man, Great effort
Back with the D&D YEEEEAAAHHHH. Break out the dice!!!!
So glad your back
me encanta- la voz suena tan clara!!! :-) buen trabajo amigo.
Is there a part 2 to this?
Yes
Just discovered Esper through AJ Pickett's site. Very glad I'm here. Already looks epic. Subbed and Liked! Hi Esper! BTW, what's an Arcai?
Thank you so much for this video. That was more entertaining to watch than all the live action D&D movies combined. How long did it take you to put this together? It can't have been easy.... Again, thank you for an excellent half hour of fun. We are definitely going to watch Part II. :-D

Helll this was so vivid, it was just amazing god im glad ur back doing D&D stuff!!! XD
I did tell them, bitch!
-sounds like an undead pimp. you got me crying with laughter
Hi What paper are u using?
+Albin Johansson It's just a big sheet of grid paper I got at an office supplies store.
Dude if you were my DM, I'd buy you a whole pizza. Awesome descriptions/voice acting/interest keeping techniques. I've been watching your vids for a long time and they have helped me become a better dm. Do you plan on making any other videos on DnD Next? By Odins bear how do u draw those maps/battle mats???
That is the plan. Thank you!
As amazing your your story telling is to make us feel like we are truly there, it was the roll of the dice that scared me most! Like the cock of a gun! ❤
I'M a big fan of what you do here.. i know you've heard this a ton, but you an amazing dnd player/dm.
Excellent job. One can see that you put a lot of time in this. Have my like.
PS Why didn't the acid dissolve the warrior web restraints?
My gratitude, Dante. The acid might have been able to eat away at the webbing. A DM could decide between: A. The acid is only potent enough to harm flesh (it doesn't bother the stonework, after all); B. The acid weakens the web restraints, which grants the subject advantage on checks to escape it; C. Krusos had some bad luck.
How are you so good at narrating?
+demonxkiller1 Thank you! Well, I love it, I practice a lot, and I write and read every day.
Well he *is* a bard.
What type of mini is Lae'dellik? I've never seen him in the older d&d sets
Zeph Warrior
Excellent. Well done.
Can I ask where you get the music playing in the background?
do you play the card game "magic the gathering"?
can you make one video to help me?
sorry because i don't speak so much english
I've played Magic for 20 years, I love it. I don't make videos about Magic because so many other channels already do so much.
Ok
What kind of job was Syndalla doing that she botched.
+Mark Moore Assassination is the most likely possibility.
Frank G I see. Maybe.
AlphaThunderWolf Maybe a member of the crime syndicate had left and sold their secrets to the guards and she was asked to silence him.
Wow, I need to step up my game.
OK this is amazing, but I need to know. Did you just tell this story or was this an actual game you played with others and just retold in this way?
Any info would be great ty!
oh I bought them years ago when WotC still produced minis. Gaming stores in town or shopping on gaming websites.
Esper you're great.
Love your vids man
Have you ever tried to do a d20 campaign before?
Zhent soldier
I would love to play a PC in your sessions
wait are you playing by yourself?
Awesome thanks 👍
Please tell me you are making a second one. As a new DM I need all the help I can get and I love all of your videos but especially the combat ones. Make more please!!!
majora's mask?
+esper the bard solo game?
Heroquest's zombies! Yeah! :)
Awesome simply awesome
i don't see why you don't play Pathfinder
Because no one likes 3.5.....I mean pathfinder.
I never played 4e so no idea what it was like but i did play 3.0 and 3.5 DnD and Pathfinder to me was the same game with a few minor changes. ***** As long as you and your players are having, it shouldn't matter what edition or kind of system you use. :)
Tome? I thought it was a tomb or burial ground.
John Smith a tome is a book
The adventure takes place within Blacktongue's tomb. The ancient book the characters seek is a tome.
Great! I really enjoyed it. Thank you very much ! :)
Please tell me you live in N michigan id pay you to be my dm lol
