As a Silver Shadow owner, a Rolls-Royce is not just a mere car. It is a well-built and well engineered machine, handmade by some of Britain's most skilled hands, and timeless in its design and build; a 1972 model like mine is still well respected, and still a wondrous machine worthy of being called "the greatest car in the world". It actually angers me that people would buy a Royce for the image alone; these people likely have no class themselves, and need to rely on the class of a Rolls-Royce, for the unworthy cause of either looking rich, or flaunting money.
Michael Tarantino Something may eventually break (like any machine), but, with Rolls Royce build quality, and proper care and regular maintenance on my end, this is mitigated greatly. Plus, individual parts are not nearly as expensive as you would think (though, granted, still more expensive than, say, parts for a Rover SD1). Besides, a Rolls-Royce is not a Morris Marina; they and and were carefully designed and built by people that actually care(d) about their jobs.
bootnsoot I don't mind the attention, though this isn't my intent as her owner. Rather, I would prefer owners actually understand why a Rolls-Royce is an excellent machine, and buy them because they are fine machines, and not because of the brand alone. It does Rolls-Royce a disservice, by giving them an image of being overpriced status symbols instead of quality, handcrafted machines worth their price tag. Also leads to abuse of unfortunate Royces by disreputable owners, too (and Chevy swaps are undignified travesties).

Actually, Rolls-Royce have always offered two classes of cars. The Corniche is an example of the smaller, more everyday model, built alongside the Phantom models which represented the grander cars. In fact, the Phantom IV, of the forties and fifties, built alongside the Silver Dawn model, was exclusive to heads of state (apart from the second chassis, which was built into a pickup for factory use).

+Jimmy Myers Mulliner Park Ward built the Corniche. The early cars, however, were known as Silver Shadow convertibles. This car is on a H plate which, unless it's a private number plate (unlikely), puts the date of registration at late 1969/early 1970, about the time when they would have started using the name.

You have a point but I think it's fair to say that modern Bentley is still very different to pre Rolls-Royce Bentley. When they were bought out, Bentley had dominated Le Mans and really was a racing brand. The Continental GT is a step in right direction, but it's still a luxury GT. However with Bentley getting back into racing they might get back there again.
Sure they weren't built for speed, but they were pretty damn fast cars, that 6.75litre v8 even though pulling along 2.3tons was more than a match for all but the big boy's. I've driven but never owned one myself, I've had an xj6 4.2 that I found equally as smooth and possibly a little quicker as well, that's down to it's more advanced straight 6 cylinder ohc engine vs the older ohv rolls Royce block, it gave a similar level of luxury to me at a fraction of the running costs, making it useable. My guess is the 40 year old rolls Royce in this video has less than 40k on the clock, my xj6 was close to 200,000 miles when I had it and still ran whisper quiet
The car in the video is actually not a Corniche, and certainly not of 1973 vintage. The facia, wheelcovers, reversing lamps, tailpipe and shallower grille all tell us that this is, in fact, a Silver Shadow Drophead Coupé by HJ Mulliner-Park Ward. In fact, it is of 1970 vintage.
Ma786sai Dua yes for me pure elan, panache, a stately elegance with mythic timelessness that absolutely no marque can match or hold a candle to. A mystical wafting. I cherish my 1982 Spirit.
The people who say they would never buy a Rolls-Royce if they could afford one have obviously never had the opportunity to drive one for a while. There really is no car in the world quite like a Rolls-Royce.
There is a car that is kissing cousins with RR in terms of what it really stands for. Packard. The name is golden even though the last such vehicle bearing the name was made in the heady days of 1958.
You can't buy class, either you have it or you don't. However, if you have taste you can buy something with an air of class. The current Rolls-Royce range is for people with lots of money but no taste.
Sorry Chap! Many RR parts including the BMW engine come from Germany and shipped over to the UK, and then are knocked together. Not quite the same thing as what RR used to be. So sad for me, as there truly was a difference when RR was British owned and operated. As one 2005 RR Phantom owner told me: „it‘s a much more tinny feel to it, like a tin can.“. The solidity and the sense of perpetualness of the build quality is gone with the German owned RR‘s of today. So sad!😢
the morgan and the bentley are also british carmakers... not only rolls royce. but i think that jaguar is not british any more... not because it's owned by tata (because the bentley is also owned by a non-british carmaker) but it has lost its british style... i mean look at the jaguar xj of 2008 and look at the current model. you'll notice that the old model looks british and the new model just a luxury limousine without even one british thing on it ( exept the bowers and wilkins soundsystem)
Even if its 40 years old, its still a powerful statement.
Even more so at 50 years of age!

I'd be willing to pay more for an understated fast car than a flashy one. Cars are more than just a mode of transport and a status symbol.
Even going across the bridge, people are spinning around to have a look.
I don't know about you guys, but Top Gear better watch out!
James May has one :)
value gone up :)
Ma786sai Dua yes for me pure elan, panache, a stately elegance with mythic timelessness that absolutely no marque can match or hold a candle to. A mystical wafting. I cherish my 1982 Spirit.
I love it.
The question remains unanswered: Beyond the general cachet that accompanies the name, what makes it a quality automobile that is worth its high cost?
One may buy that which some may deem a classy car, but no, one cannot, for love nor money, buy class.
It's a ford Zephyr with s chromed nose- Jeremy Clarkson
Thanks Herr Hoehn
The people who say they would never buy a Rolls-Royce if they could afford one have obviously never had the opportunity to drive one for a while. There really is no car in the world quite like a Rolls-Royce.
There is a car that is kissing cousins with RR in terms of what it really stands for. Packard. The name is golden even though the last such vehicle bearing the name was made in the heady days of 1958.
I'd like to know what time of the night you are driving to have such traffic free conditions in London. Possibly a Sunday or Bank Holiday?
How is the reliability in a car like these ??? Im interested but i have some fears.
If well maintained and driven "properly" it will outlast us both twice over!
You can't buy class, either you have it or you don't. However, if you have taste you can buy something with an air of class. The current Rolls-Royce range is for people with lots of money but no taste.
Proper handcrafted piece of English history, the reason the English are the best engineers in the world 😎
Thanks festerovski, yes, well spotted indeed, it is Glaswegian. I'm originally from Bearsden.
Indeed.

So sad!😢
to buy something just because it's rare and pricy is a sickness. you gotta love something and then the price doesn't matter
the morgan and the bentley are also british carmakers... not only rolls royce. but i think that jaguar is not british any more... not because it's owned by tata (because the bentley is also owned by a non-british carmaker) but it has lost its british style... i mean look at the jaguar xj of 2008 and look at the current model. you'll notice that the old model looks british and the new model just a luxury limousine without even one british thing on it ( exept the bowers and wilkins soundsystem)
