My parents were children of the depression. They could grow anything and we had a huge garden every year. They planted flowers to keep the bugs off the vegetables. So…according to what I was taught as a child, you NEED flowers in the garden. 😀

The smaller flowered French marigolds are better pest repellents than the larger flowered African marigold varieties. Pollinators love marigolds as well.

When planting ornamental, I try to go by the rule of you want spillers (vines that go down), fillers (beautiful flowers and such) and thrillers (spikes or something that goes high) to go from the front to the back in planters. Happy gardening. It’s been a beyond cold spring in Minnesota (15 degrees below average!)….. snowing again today and I can’t wait to get planting. Living vicariously through you!!!

I can totally relate when you talked about being SO BORED in the nurseries. I grew up with my parents owning an antique mall so every family vacation was a buying trip. We would spend hours inside flea markets and antique malls and I would be so bored, but now, at 32, I find myself longing to go wander around those same haunts I once despised. ❤️

"SQUIRREL. " LOL, Becky. I'm loving it that you can laugh about it! But seriously...those impatients are shade plants. I usually get 2 1/2 six-packs to make a hanging basket...talk about impact! And also I highly recommend caladium bulbs for an astonishing display of color in a shaded area. And the great thing about pots or hanging baskets is that you can move them to shaded areas as the spring light moves to hot summer and fall.

A double pot might do the trick just like you do for houseplants. This time though you don't make the inner pot fit nice and snug; you keep a good space between the two. Air is a good insulator so it'll help mitigate temps.

I always went for the dark purple and red flowers. But a nursery owner told me one time that pastels show up so much better against the landscape. He said when you drive down the road and look at yards, check out the colors that stand out to you, and he was correct; the pale yellows, the whites, and the pinks and lavender all show up much better from the road or even when you’re inside your house looking out at your garden through a window.

I always grow my beets in cells/pots and they transplant easily. Never had any problems. I don't do that with parsnips or carrots - they get sown direct - sow the radishes along the same rows so that they mark the line as they grow faster and offer protection to the slower starting roots. :) Love your choice of French marigolds - I have similar just in the seedling stage at the moment. I'll be growing them in the greenhouse to keep the aphids away. I also have to sniff the herbs! Happy, happy video! Cheers! xx

The flowers in the garden will help attract the bees for pollination for your vegetable s. To maximize the potatoes that have multiple eyes, you can cut them and then let them cure for at least two days. This will help prevent bugs being attracted to them once planted.

I stocked up. A couple years ago I brought dried thai basil and a small basil up to pick off seeds and the next year we had volunteers. Mom was not happy but by then end of the season she agreed that they smelled good and we left them to keep coming back. I cringe at the number of voluntary marigolds that will be spread out across my property this year.

We’ve done lady bugs once. They don’t stay for very long, I probably noticed them for about a week and our package probably had about five packs worth what you showed. We support our garden and a community garden since we live in a low income community. We now have two bee boxes and they work amazing. We’ve had them about two weeks now and will support the community at about 5 mile radius. Bees are not my friends, but as long as you’re calm near bees they stay calm. My brother tends to the bees for now.
Edit to add: my niece (5) was so excited to release the lady bugs. But there was more than she expected. So when the bag opened and the lady bugs swarmed out and she panicked. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t even help to calm her. It kills me even thinking about it. Lol

That white pot is perfect for the olive tree! 😍. Looks like a fun way to spend your day! 🥰 Also - the little white flowers are called sweet alyssum and I’m pretty sure they’re edible and in the cucumber family…but I know for sure that’s what they’re called. 😉

I started alyssum seeds this spring and only one came up. Looks like I will be heading to the garden center. :) I love white flowers.

Once they're established, alyssum will spread all over, where I live - warm to hot (110°F, windy high desert, California.) If you water a shaded lawn here, with a border planting of alyssum, you will soon have an alyssum lawn! Make sure you keep it watered, well-fed, and happy where it is, and pull up the strays. So pretty, though!
We all -family and friends - love you, Becky, and pray that God will bless you abundantly. You can have no idea the light you bring to others' lives!
      ❤🙏🏻❤🙏🏻❤

The little white flowers are alyssum. I plant alyssum every year because they're delicate, lovely and cover ground so well. I love anything pretty that helps with the weeding

For the potatoes you can use any large container and start the potatoes low, and add dirt when you start to see the greens pop through, don't need to buy a spendy container for them....we've even used extra 5 gallon buckets, and stock tanks!

My granddaughter's nickname has been Squirrel for her entire life (she's 15). Her full nickname is Squirrel E. Bird. She's just used to it, so it doesn't bother her. I call her Punkin or Chickopee. (Poor girl! So many nicknames!) Her real name is Ameila. Imagine that!

I completely agree that growing starts vs growing from seed require different skill sets. Im not really good at growing from seed.
I love houseplants and am pretty good at giving them what's needed to thrive.... I have a grow tent full of to rare and tropical plants (probably around 150 plants) and I can keep all of them alive... But I managed to stunt this year's seeds...

    FYI
"Grocery Outlet" usually have large terracotta pots for $35- $50 each.
Also try "Tuesday Morning" in Hazel Dell they usually have a wide variety of garden goodies this time of year at fantastic prices.

bottle brush for the cleaning of the humingbird food holder. You really gotta keep it full though cause the hummingbirds really count on having it there for them. Since I'm retired, I think I'll do that this year. We have a couple holders.

Becky, it just makes my day when I see you've posted a new video. You had me pulling up Lowe's and Home Depot sale ads for my area. I'm glad I did because potting soil will be on sale starting tomorrow and I need more. I live in an apt so pots are the only thing I'm able to grow anything in at this time. I love all of the beautiful flowers you got. Purple and orange are my favorites too. I can't wait to see how they look in your garden. Have a great day!

Can't wait to see them planted! You can take cuttings and propagate Creeping jenny, and petunias and grow your own for the next year! Good luck!

Hi Becky, you're at my favorite nursery since it's so near my house. However I never buy pots there, way too expensive. A great place to get pots is at Ross or big box stores like you mentioned. Glad you got the olive tree, I did it two years ago and it's doing great, winter hardy here:)

While you were looking at the hummingbird feeders, I thought, I have three of those never used because I dont have time to keep them full. I didnt even think about having to clean them! People have lovingly bought them for me because I have fond memories of my grandparents feeding hummingbirds and watching the different birds "fight" over who got to drink first.

I grew the strawberry blonde marigolds for the first time last year. They are so cool. They start dark red and the flowers age through a peachy color to yellow. Also they are tend to be more red in cool weather. They are well named.

Oh when I heard you say you liked to lay out in your yard I thought oh goodness she needs a hammock. I'm on my third one because they don't last forever but it's my favorite place to "hangout" almost anytime of the year. Even when it's cool if it's nice out i'll tote a blanket outside for a nap or bit of reading. The fresh air warm or cool is good for the soul! Mine is on a stand so I don't have to worry about having the perfect trees to hang it from and I can drag it around where I fancy!

Oh Becky, please don’t let your experience with Fiddle Leaf determine your ability to grow indoor plants! I kill those guys too but I have over 50 other plants that do extremely well! Fiddle leaf and Maiden Hair ferns live just long enough for me to think they might make it and then they take a turn for the worse. Oh yeah orchids too. I cannot imagine life indoors especially living in the PNW without plants! Thank you for your videos!
