- Starting our new homestead in the woods from scratch, and only having a few days to move the farm animals to the woods meant I had to setup a shelter and pasture for the goats fast. The goats (and duck) are doing great so far, but I will be building a permanent shelter for them in the future, and expanding their pastures so they can forage more.

Personally I think fence posts are a good investment. We wanted to save money/time about 10 years ago and used trees for most of our corner posts and some line posts. Within a few years we realized our mistake. This summer we replaced the fencing with creosote post corners and t-posts for the line posts. If you are only going to have the fence up a few years then using trees might be your best/cheapest option, but if you want the fence to hold up long term then consider investing in fence posts.
You failed to mention the problem using trees to attach fencing to is as the tree grows taller you're fencing moves farther from the ground. if a goat can't go over the top of a fence they will go under, especially, NGs and pygmies.
You can use the old propane tank for hot water storage for future buildings.

I'd guess y'all go to sleep at night and you stay asleep without waking all night! Moving into a new house AND making the animals comfortable - that's double timing it for sure. 1st thing to do: remember Epsom Salts. Take nice long hot soaking baths to soothe tired muscles. If you don't have tired muscles yet, you will have them soon. I am very excited for you and your family. What a blessing you have received. Instead of fencing pliers I use a 3/16 inch nut driver with the handle cut off to cinch the fence ties! It will go in between the squares of the woven wire and cinch the wire supertight!

Could you lag bolt treated 2x4s or 4x4 timbers to the trees, and staple the fence to that? It would avoid some damage to the trees from the fence becoming ingrown. And you could back the lag bolts out every year or so to keep the tree from growing around the timber. The problem with the root flair could also be avoided.
Thanks for the great ideas! Providence Farm has a mixed property that's wooded and open grassland, and I never thought of using the trees as posts; love that innovation! What a great use of the natural landscape, and a super savings. We appreciate you teaching that to us. Blessings.

Calf hutches are not used for veal! They are used to raise bottle dairy calves, modern dairy cows are terrible mothers, often they will step on or forget the baby calves! Dairy’s put the calves alone in a hutch or small pen so they can’t suck on each other and spread illness. I hope this clears up the veal misconception. Have a good one

Yes, the tree will grow right over the wire.........which sounds fine until one dies and you decide to cut it up for firewood. Its better to nail a 2x4 to the tree and then attach the fence to it. That way the tree doesnt grow around the fence.

I heard and have seen from cutting many very old trees down in my time and finding nails in them that they don’t die from nails and actually rust is supposed to be beneficial to green life. But pound some copper’rods’ in them and by by tree. Just my 2cents.

Brilliant! We just wrote an offer on 2 acres. One acre has the house and pasture and the back acre is wooded. There's currently no fencing so we were looking for a way to fence portions of the woods for Nigerian Dwarfs. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

I know using trees as posts isn't the preferred method but you have to do what you have to do to get the job done. I really liked ranging goats in a mixture of woods and pasture. They really get fat on the acorns in the fall. You have a beautiful place.

Build some steps using a couple of railway sleepers the same as the walls,cheapest way and will match the existing walls,I have done a few using a chainsaw and would take 20 minutes

Young people's minds jump all over the place all the time. I don't know how it works, but the attention span and the things that we notice and pay attention to as grown-ups are way different.
I guess it might be that kids shout out anything that comes to mind while once you get older you have self-awareness and just contain all of your thoughts. Except, even then, the imagination and frequency is different.

You use the cuban style fencing , we use trees a lot back in cuba since we dont have a lot of resousers , we usually plant the tree and the grow around the fence. I like this house already a lot of proyect which means a lot of videos.God Bless you and your family

Sir, if you ever decide to cut the trees that you have stapled the fence to, your chainsaw will tear up. Trees will grow over the fence causing problems. But hey, enjoy the property.

Is goaty-mcgoat face a girl? If he's a boy, could he be in danger from the buck being territorial? Your little helper there stayed out with you keeping you company like a trooper. You sure are taking care of everyone in a short time span of having to move everything and get re-established. Congratulations on all that you've already accomplished. It's amazing really.
I'd get rid of the old propane tank and build a ramp up to the back yard. Eventually your gonna wanna get a 4 wheeler back there or something.
The tank could be used for other things, like diesel. Those are expensive things.

I worry with all the trees that you may need a different approach to overhead protection for the chickens. I'm wondering about possums climbing down the trees specifically.

That tree will be dead before it can grow over that fence. It’s on the inside with the goats they will gird the bark and kill it before it can do any growing around that fence.
It our last wooded pasture they leave the bigger trees alone mostly. They may rub some bark off but not enough to kill them. However, all the younger trees in there are gonners :)

Great video. 5 years now with chickens. Just this past Mother’s Day we got ourselves into (2) goats. (Then a couple turkeys & 7 ducks). Nigerian dwarf and a fainting goats. Tons of fun. Thinking of either sheep or maybe 2 pigs for seasonal butchering? Thoughts on last 2?

Your gonna hate what the fence does to your trees as they grow. And goats are hard on any vegetation. Trees included!
They will kill off all the younger trees and leave the bigger ones. I am ok with that
@@SSLFamilyDad They’ll eat the bark off the big ones too, eventually killing them. But then you have lots of trees so thinning them out won’t hurt it much.

Yea he needs donkeys,,,,they will chase everything out of the pasture that doesn't belong,,,,lots of people use them here in the south...and Lama's and the smaller ones as well
This will keep the goats in? I’m dreaming of getting goats (but they will have to live in our woods) and this seems like easy (inexpensive 🤞🏻) way to get fencing done. I always hear goat get out of fences very easy. 🤷🏻♀️

My expirience is the goats will eat the bark and kill the trees
I always thought that that you had to remove all the bark from around the tree in one section to kill it. I tried this and the bark just grew back and the tree lived well. Maybe the specific type I don’t know but it lived.
What happened to the pigs
Sold all those little buggers. Did a video on it a while back. Might do pigs here down the road again once we are setup for them
American guinea hogs would love all this forage, they’re woodland pigs, we have so many acorns here. I hope we have them again!

I'd be concerned about wild life attacking your goats in the woods.
I'm more concerned about the goats jumping that fence. It's not tall enough...
And the trees growing can very well cause trouble for the fence as well, it'll need adjustment (reattaching and stuff) every few years.
We had goats in the past, and fences we thought to guide around trees...

The spot where your house sits was once forest too. You're being to narrow minded. The SSL Family is far more environmentally friendly then most Americans families.

@@dominantspeciesgardens4843 it is a pasture. You must be from Europe? Or a plane state? Cause pastures like this are very common in the Midwest. Who says a pasture can't have a few trees in it? That's far from a forest as well it's just some wood. You can tell it's been thinned out by humans already. If that were a forest he wouldn't be able to walk through it like that, he'd have to hack his way through the brush.
