I woke this morning with a song on my mind. I just wanted to hear Mary's voice sing this beautiful song. She should have received a Grammy. Well Mary, you are dancing with the stars above. I still miss you.
Wow, I never know she recorded a second album for Motown! That needs to be released! This is beautiful! Mary has to be one of the most underrated singers ever!
Yes Mary, this song fit your voice .You did this song justice. It is a shame that you did not get the backing of this song. It could have been in a hit.
I want to say Mary was a sweet dear friend one of my best and we talk very often I miss her so much she did such a beautiful job on this song and I wish the whole world could hear it love to all she has missed
No disrespect to Mary's vocal or musical abilities...but she is literally one of the most beautiful women that have ever lived! Jaw hits the floor and stays there...every time I see her.
What a powerfull performance, Beautifull melody. I have just discover Mary willson as solo singer and I think she is very good. I have already made this coment in other of her videos, but ...I don´t understand why on earth she did not have any single lead on the supremes. I don´t mean Diana Ross don´t deserve it, but Mary willson was as good as her. Thanks for posting.,,I can´t get this song and her voice out of my head!
One of the great things about Mary Wilson is her level of involvement with what she is singing,. She has an expression of joy and enthusiasm here that is so nice to watch. She also has a fantastic voice and wonderful stage presence.
If Mary had allowed the Supremes to disband when Diana Ross left, left Motown and signed with a label who made opportunities available to her that were more suited to her natural style, and focused more in developing herself in her musical forte which is the singing of ballads, then she would have been far more successful in the long run. As we see here she is an OUTSTANDING vocalist.
I understand what you are saying, but that would meant we would not have gotten all of those great Supremes songs in the 70s. You know "Up the Ladder", "Stone Love", "River Deep, ,mountain High", "Nathan Jones", "Floy Joy", "High Energy" and on and on. Even still, Mary has had a spectacular solo career even without the big solo hits she's put out some great music and is one of the top singer / performers in the game today.
Then we wouldn't have had Jean Terrell, Jean, Mary and Cindy along with producer Frank Wilson were Great, Mary said after the Ross era she liked the Jean years
We are responsible for our own lives. But unfortunately just didn’t have the confidence to move away from what she knew best, which was the world of Motown. Even Diana made sure to leave Motown and rediscover herself. And made her life work even without Berry Gordy.
WHAT? WOW! I never even knew this existed...how could this NOT be put on vinyl back in the day? She could add this into future shows and this would be a crowd pleaser. Sometimes, I can really like youtube...lol. This was a gem of a find, thanks for sharing :-)
Great Job Steve , I think Miss Wilson voice is sooooo underrated, it is powerful, gutsy, and rich. I also heard that this was considered for one of the James Bond movie sound tracks...is that true? Lastly how was Mary to work with?
What a beautiful song. Is this one of the ones on her solo album with Motown? Over the years her solo sound has reminded me of Phyllis Hyman. I hear it even more so in this song. Mary should record this one again, and make a ballad version and a dance version of it. I remember her saying she got vocal lessons from the late 60’s through the 70’s because Berry Gordy kept telling her she couldn’t sing. You can see her voice is well trained here. She looks a lot like Diana Ross here too. I remember back in the day, before her Dreamgirls memoir came out, I used think she and Ross were related because they looked like family and seemed like sisters. Sadly those days are long gone. This tune is beautiful. @DetroitLives313 thank you for posting this.
@Michael Shaw She recorded it for her 2nd solo album on Motown but before it could be released, Motown cancelled her contract. It is a great song and great performance.
My friend, and incredibly talented poet and spoken word artist, Stevie Kalinich is responsible for co-writing this tune with Ken Hirsch for Mary Wilson! Wow!
wow! Mary looks and sounds Sensational hear. this song sounds like something Phyllis Hyman would have sung, and Mary's contralto is on point. the song deserve to single release. don't understand why Berry Gordy couldn't have at least released Mary's music. SMH. thank you for uploading this!
MS MARY WILSON "smoky, sultry, sensual, soulful voice" was always and still my favorite at lead with THE SUPREMES, nor Diane or Florence could deliver a "ballad' like Ms, Wilson. Today as a "solo artist" like here she's simply MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!!!
I amy be bold to say that Mary Wilson is one the most beautiful Black women i ve ever seen. Look at those lips, those teeth those eyes and all that femininity. She is by far the best looker of all the women that came from Motown, including Tammy Terrell and Wanda Rogers, who come very close too.
Tony Turner who wrote ALL THAT GLITTERED MY LIFE WITH THE SUPREMES, just did a live interview here in Tampa on radio about this song. Tony Turner said it was part of four songs that Mary Wilson recorded in 1980. The songs were recorded to be shopped around for a new solo contract for Ms. Wilson. He said they all are great recordings including the legendary GREEN RIVER. Ms Wilson's amazing rendition of Green River at that time, was thought by many producers to be the voice of Tina Turner who as Turner stated was also launching a comeback, or as Tony called it, "... a return darling". .
Do you have any idea where Tony Turner is now? I just reread All That Glittered after a couple of decades and loved it all over again. On a whim, I looked for Delcina Wilson on social media and actually found her. 50 years older than she was in Tony's book, she seems to still be going strong and doing some positive things in New York. I loved reading about her antics in the book.
@Michael Militello I know right? It was finally released a couple of years ago on a compilation album, but not by Motown. Let's hope Universal finally gives it a proper release.
Wonderful rendition, the feeling and emotion she conveys singing ballads is her true forte! Her version of the song "Touch" from the 1970's Supremes album of the same name later released in "The Supremes-The 70's Anthology" totally proves that Motown had lost their ability on how to market and promote The Supremes. "Touch" with Mary Wilson as lead should have been marketed and promoted surely bringing the fans back home and they didn't! ...Diana, Diana, Diana...What a waste? Mary, you're SUPREME
It was once said that Gordy didn't use Mary on lead( not because she couldn't sing, but because her vocal style was similar to Mary Wells) He wanted each artist to be different. Their names were also close too!!!!
That makes perfect sense. I always thought that with Mary on the lead, The Supremes would have sounded like The Marvelettes. Similarly, with Florence leading, The Supremes would have sounded like The Vandellas. Not exactly sound alike in either case, but too similar to be distinct. Nobody at Motown or anywhere else sounded like Diana Ross.
Unfortunately, Miss Wilson missed out on the Grammy nomination. Her outstanding performance was on the official ballot but did not get the nod. The Grammys have been notorious for passing on the Supremes and Mary Wilson.
I know. I am very happy though that more people are becoming aware of this and other songs Mary's recorded over the years. She keeps the Original Supremes alive in so many ways.
She's absolutely stunning here. Amazing voice and range, and of course, she's gorgeous. Why would Motown release her from her contract and not bother to promote this? Because it would rival Diana Ross who would soon leave Motown? It doesn't make sense, yet who am I to question Berry Gordy's choices?
My all time ''fav'' Supreme. My fav and last lineup of the 70's Supremes were Mary, Susaye Greene and Scherrie Payne. Never cared for Jean Terrell. Motown could have chosen better. Never liked the diva of the original group (D.R.) but can't deny she's had a great solo career.
Your comment caught me by surprise, and I had to reply. I don't know you of course, but I am surprised that anyone have disliked Jean Terrell. I thought she recorded some fine material with The Supremes, and the label really dropped the ball on the Jean-Mary-Cindy lineup after Floy Joy. Unfortunately, the operational model of Motown was changing in the early seventies, and acts who couldn't A&R themselves tended to not do well.
Mary was in the abusive marriage with Pedro Ferrer. In her book she talked about how he made an attempt to smash a glass in her face but ended cutting her ear (it was hanging barely attached) Mary had to see a plastic surgeon. He was insecure about her beauty and fame....
I hope that Mary can some day forgive Diana. If the two can just get together, along with Cindy, they can make more money than they can imagine. That's just how powerful their energy is as the Surpremes. But they would rather hold on to immature yesterdays, than moving forward to forgiving and profitable tomorrows. Both Diana and Mary are still hurt and stubborn. A "Love" tour can change all that and make a world of people hopeful.
@TWTR4EVER SUPER SUPREME,AND I MUST REMIND EVERYONE,SHE,S RAISED MILLIONS FOR CHARITY.THE CHILDRENS HOSPITAL OF AUSTIN ,TX ,BENEFITED GREATLY FROM HER GENEROSITY
I think its a shame that motown didnt promote this song... and im really not a fan of Mary Wilson...maybe she schould concentrate of solo carriers with another company instead " of attacking" constantly Diana Ross over the years....!!
This is f***ing beautiful! I never knew this clip existed until now!!

She should have received a Grammy.
Well Mary, you are dancing with the stars above. I still miss you.
Beautiful song from a breathtaking beauty, Miss Mary Wilson. Love This performance.
This recording is absolutely gorgeous, as is Mary's performance. How Motown could cancel its release is beyond comprehension.
Wow, I never know she recorded a second album for Motown! That needs to be released! This is beautiful! Mary has to be one of the most underrated singers ever!
RIP Mary, a true national treasure

Yes! Beautiful song. Stephen has commented here below.
Hints of Dusty Springfield in Mary's voice
Dennis Belkofer Yes!! I had been saying that for awhile now too.
I bet if she hand sung this instead of red hot, things would have been different. This performance was excellent
it can be used in an animated film or closing credits.. call Disney.
This is a great song; however, it did not make the final list of the grammy nominations that was released today.
