These were created towards the end of the use of swords a a primary weapon in combat. They were issued to artillery and machine guns crews who had little use for the longer cavalry swords. The Bolsheviks did not continue production because handguns had become the backup weapon of choice.
What are they good for? I think a secondary weapon for situations where the individual cannot have a handgun for whatever reason. A 17 inch blade has considerably more reach than a knife and the design can be used for both slashing and stabbing. It is also more maneuverable in tight situations than a long sword.
Windlass makes a serviceable copy, new ones of Russian origins are available, and or course, originals can be had but those in collectible conditions are naturally priced out of the self defense market.
The author mentions the steel, but what are the specifics? Carbon steel conquered the world more than once!
How does it cut and how does it handle?

+sam nelson it handles well, but within limitations of no practical use today. Steel us also unknown since it is such an old blade. Interesting to hear about windlass, I am going to check them out, thank you.
