Who got fired in 1997, Don, Billy Williams, Bill Webster, Maureen but not her mom, Joyce, Percy, Des's girlfriend, Mavis, and Derek. I liked Joyce she was quirky. ITV was actually going to cancel Emmerdale, but they couldn't resist Phills Offer, and let him hey presto the plane crash. I know Thelma Barlow had decided to leave her role as Mavis before Derek was axed by Brian Park.. there was rumours she quit because of that but it wasn’t true, she’d had enough.
I've been binge-watching retro Corrie all year going back to the early 1970s and generally loving it. But some of the crappier, tedious, silly storylines have been going on for a few years now - for me, the whole Alan Bradley thing and his bratty daughter was the start of the down-slide but there was, and still is, enough of the good stuff (and characters) left to keep going - for a bit longer anyway. I'm still missing Bet ... mind you, I still miss Hilda and Stan. 😄
1:32:00 Interesting remarks from Ken about his financial situation. As Head of Department in a largish Comprehensive School in the late 1990s, he'd have been on a salary of £30,000 - £35,000. If he'd retired in his late 50s he'd have been able to claim around £18,000 per annum from the Teachers Pension Scheme (TPS) - I know, I'm a member. That would be equivalent to more like £36,000 in today's money, and it's index-linked to inflation. I'll leave it to you to work out whether that'd be enough for him to live comfortably on. Clue: Yes.
Since making the above post, I've realized that Ken didn't spend the whole of his working life in teaching, and so wouldn't have been able to claim the full pension. I seem to remember that he was employed for quite a period of time as a journalist and newspaper editor in the 1980s, and he may have worked in one or two other fields as well.
Yes, very sad...after all their issues, he was the last one to say goodbye. And Des made a very poignant remark when they were fishing and made a remark about dark clouds looming if I remember.

Emasculates poor Alf to anyone. That really gets up my nose. Mutton dressed up as lamb.
Very odd, as he's the only Des in the street. They do it with other characters, like Mike Baldwin, and Ken Barlow, even though it's clear it's not some other Kern or Mike being referred to, and by people who know them well. Maybe the writers are underestimating the viewers' ability to remember who is who and it's for their benefit.
With regards to what Rita between at 3:49:09 and 3:49:12 women were not allowed to wear trousers in the civil service before 1977. Before April 1977 if a woman turned up in a civil service firm with trousers they would be sent home.

Between 4:51:20 and 4:52:18 I reckon Jim was right to be annoyed with his son Andrew. Whatever Liz has done she does not deserve to be bad-mouthed to an outsider. Fourty years earlier youngsters had to respect their mother no matter what. I worked with a woman called Peggy Wickens who was 33 years older than me. Peggy was scared of her mother. I'm doing my best, but the current episodes (2024) are such rubbish now. There's a buzz word in every other line and the characters DWELL on a subject unrealistically (to enable the understanding of the slow-witted audience), like in American soaps such as The Young & the Restless. Throw in the use of smart phones and social media and vogue phrases like "far right" and sundry libtard perspectives, with no disheveled residences in a working class neighbourhood, where everyone gets a job across from where they live, and give the characters older than 65 one line every other month and you're all set.
The character of Liz was normal every day lady then as her character goes from bad to worse.. The character of Liz should go back to be normal every lady.. 👍🏾
@johnjoyce In addition to that Maxine can be a pretty tough lady. It is beyond me that the residents thought that Maxine would let a shrimp like Aiden do her in nearly six years later.
Between 48:43 and 49:10 here is an interesting bit. Audrey being pompous by say Roy Cropper was rude to her when it was the other way round. Still if Audrey was a carbon copy of Meg Morris in Prisoner: Cell Block H, Coronation Street would not be as interesting as it was then. At the end of episode 3 in Prisoner: Cell Block H Chrissie Latham killed Meg's first husband Bill Jackson just because he knock her back. Fortunately for Chrissie Meg was not one to bear a grudge. If Audrey had been in Meg Morris/Jackson's place Audrey would have held a grudge against Chrissie for fourteen years like Toyah did with Maria between February 2003 and February 2017.
6:15:14 Judy very much resembles Amy Winehouse, but can't have been copying the look as Amy would only have been 13 or 14 at the time, and unknown to the public.
Judy actress does nothing for me on Emmerdale.(if shes still on it?) But her look on this was lovely, and I really like her. She reminds me of the Italian american WAGS on Goodfellas etc. Mouthy, Dark hair, Tight dresses....
So a normal mother would comfort her son after being threatened with a shotgun but not liz she goes back to her gangsta boyfriend! I didnt think anyone could be a worst character than tricia armstrong but liz wins by a clear mile! Don’t get me started on fiona…
Kevin Webster turned into Mike Baldwin in 1989 when he gave a young lad working for him a hard time. I don't know why, but I like Mike Baldwin better than Kevin Webster.
Well spotted, I honestly hadn't myself! Just googled it, he suffered from alopecia apparently so decided to shave it off in the real life but have the wig fitted for his acting in Corrie! So there you go! :-)
Between 1:10:10 and 1:11:55 that is Maureen O'Farrell who played Fraser Henderson's wife. She is pretty. Why Mr. Henderson would want to cheat on her with another woman is beyond me. If I was married to Maureen I would be 100% satisfied. I guess Maureen O'Farrell was born in September 1953.
Aye. Des was outta order but for Samantha to publicly humiliate as she did OPPOSITE the house he lived with Claire and Becky was a classic biatch move.
People are getting pretty daft on this street. Liz MacDonald?? Seriously! No one has any kind of a happy life. Everyone's miserable. What a very sad place to live! Anyone watching this series would become depressed, if they weren't already.. I used to like several people, but not now. No good story lines really.
Well another great month thanks to Eve Henley-Spread. Ashley is a great character yes his voice gets more whinny at times but he has a very good heart. Maxine needs a slap for saying he's her cousin. They will have their day in ****** . Don is such a loose Cannon but that is what they all wanted like every character on the street the path is planned for them. The day Don Brennan goes will be a flaming celebration. Nearly at the end of the month but great viewing Cyclone Gabrielle is hitting NZ at the current time. More and worse to come but hope we get through it ok. This is a great distraction. Thanks Eve.
@SteveLundgren-i2y It's all subjective, but I happen to agree with @jackfoster501 Audrey has zero redeeming features and I want to FF through every scene she's in.
I nearly said how come the lovely Fiona ( Angela Griffin) is much lighter skinned than her brother Lee, but i remembered Fionas mum is white & her dad is black Years ago i had a friend, Miranda who had the same parentage of White mum & Black dad. Her brother was much darker skinned & her sister was white while my friend had the most gorgeous coffee skinned tone & was quite a successful model up here in North Eastern Britain I remember a famous Brit sports star called Daley Thompson who was Black & his full brother was white, they shared a Black mum & a White dad. People often comment even now that Black & White parents should consider their kids skin colour & if its fair that a mixed race child should have to chose a race! THIS is so racist! I also think mixed race people are very attractive & what colour they wish to be known as is irrelevant to who they are! My mixed race friend married a White guy & without exception her children were the most beautiful children i'd ever seen! Both her son & daughter were snatched up, even head hunted by model agents when they were first born! They were just so beautiful! Now her daughter is a doctor but her son went on to become a Cat Walk model with fashion houses such as Dior, Gucci, Versace, McQueen, in London, Paris, Milan & New York where he now lives & runs his own agency & STILL Such an incredibly handsome guy! Cheers 🇬🇧👧
@italia666 As I said before it would have been more logical to have Angela Bruce as Fiona's mother instead of Elizabeth Estensen. Angela Bruce who is 25 years older than Angela Griffin has the same colour skin in the same shade of brown and Angela Bruce was born in Leeds the same as Angela Griffin. When Angela Bruce played Sandra Ling in the hospital drama Angels she played a similar character to Fiona Middleton.

Throw in the use of smart phones and social media and vogue phrases like "far right" and sundry libtard perspectives, with no disheveled residences in a working class neighbourhood, where everyone gets a job across from where they live, and give the characters older than 65 one line every other month and you're all set.
Sounds pure shite that's why I don't watch modern TV
Liz young 😂 when the copper to the gangster's wife has he got sight problems 😖🤔
I wish Liz would’ve thrown that vase at Frazier. The smack in the mouth would’ve been worth it the she tried to Jim through the ringer😂
The character of Liz was normal every day lady then as her character goes from bad to worse.. The character of Liz should go back to be normal every lady.. 👍🏾
Maxine was and still is absolutely gorgeous.
Very Delicious ♥️
Good Looking Lady ♥️
@johnjoyce In addition to that Maxine can be a pretty tough lady. It is beyond me that the residents thought that Maxine would let a shrimp like Aiden do her in nearly six years later.
Eyes like a cat
Des girlfriend she was annoying
Have just realized that Audrey has a mullet 😅
Her hair looks ridiculous
Alf lost some weight in his face, sad
Think the actor died soon after, he's,, 1 of the old school
Alf Roberts
Bryan Mosley passed in Feb 1999....they had him pass at a party at Gail's in New Years Day, Jan 1999, in a chair.
Died with his boots on
RIP good a Actor
Dez was funny die of fright very good 😂😂😂😂😂
Factory fire at 5:35:45,
5:37:06, 5:37:54,
5:39:31, 5:41:00
It does feel like maybe this era was written by emotionally underdeveloped writers, the immaturity of people who should know better is wild lol
this era writers were better then current ones has be said and better cast too
There's a good vibe to Corrie here
@@liamf7838 I agree with that but the stories were quite immature
So a normal mother would comfort her son after being threatened with a shotgun but not liz she goes back to her gangsta boyfriend! I didnt think anyone could be a worst character than tricia armstrong but liz wins by a clear mile! Don’t get me started on fiona…
When did Kevin Webster turn into Mike Baldwin ?
Shame he didn’t turn into The Invisible Man! 😉
Kevin Webster turned into Mike Baldwin in 1989 when he gave a young lad working for him a hard time. I don't know why, but I like Mike Baldwin better than Kevin Webster.
Tina Holby aka Samantha has to be the best looking woman ever on. Coronation Street
Extra points for calling her Tina Holby instead of Hobley. Made me laugh.
Mr Horton has an ear ring .... but then, he does have his own house
I am surprised that Mike has not jumped to the conclusion that Ken started the fire that happened from 5:39:02 to 5:40:22
The Liz and Fraser story is beyond ridiculous……and beyond boring 🥱🥱🥱🥱😴😴😴😴
At 5:17:54 Alan said he wan'ts to marry Fiona. Doesn't she get a say in the matter?
Ashley’s voice is so much more normal…why did he start with the weird squeaky voice later?!?
Why is Gary wearing a wig 47:15? Was the actor ill?
Well spotted, I honestly hadn't myself! Just googled it, he suffered from alopecia apparently so decided to shave it off in the real life but have the wig fitted for his acting in Corrie! So there you go! :-)
@@EveHenleySpread thanks for the info!
If you want a good laugh watch Samurai Cop if you haven't seen it where the lead guy wears a wig half way through.
Looks like it was stuck down with pretty sticky
Looks itchy 😖🤯🤧
At 4:10:46 Liz need not despair. There is always Deidre she can stay with.
Liz McDonald going off with a married man at 40 I ask you. Is it any wonder Steve McDonald later became a bit lecherous.
I seem to remember that Paul Marquess wrecked the Bill as well as Corrie.
Why are they so opposed to therapy? Andy has PTSD and he won't get over it
i agree. i'd probably need therapy after a few dates with anne.
Half the people on the street need therapy!
Des is so revolting.
What's happened to his birds bonce 😫 very cell block h🙀
Smarmy school teachers are one thing but smarmy cid police officers ughhh
It’s very good for cycologis soap I guess ed
4:38:14 Alan is sad , Woeps🥲
Aye. Des was outta order but for Samantha to publicly humiliate as she did OPPOSITE the house he lived with Claire and Becky was a classic biatch move.
Ken Barlow is so selfish!! and the same goes for Des Barnes and Liz MacDonald, pathetic..😒
How sad to see how low Alma's standards have fallen. Condones, validates and supports a nasty piece of work...Mike. Not liking Alma.
Alma is weak with Mike. Without Mike she was always strong and confident.
Nearly at the end of the month but great viewing
Cyclone Gabrielle is hitting NZ at the current time. More and worse to come but hope we get through it ok. This is a great distraction. Thanks Eve.
Don's a nice guy but ia he?
Alma, women's intuition
4:02:29 Vera 😂
Between 1:13:04 and 1:14:47 Maureen O'Farrell.
2:02:00
Liz needs knee pads
So she does
Has there ever been a more annoying character than Audrey.
@jackfoster501 Of course there has. Some characters have been way more annoying than Audrey.
@SteveLundgren-i2y It's all subjective, but I happen to agree with @jackfoster501 Audrey has zero redeeming features and I want to FF through every scene she's in.
I never liked Maureen. She was awful.
Can’t stand Clare ….really rates herself 🤮
Between 2:03:57 and 2:04:02 Well done Jim lad.
⁰
I nearly said how come the lovely Fiona ( Angela Griffin) is much lighter skinned than her brother Lee, but i remembered Fionas mum is white & her dad is black
Years ago i had a friend, Miranda who had the same parentage of White mum & Black dad.
Her brother was much darker skinned & her sister was white while my friend had the most gorgeous coffee skinned tone & was quite a successful model up here in North Eastern Britain
I remember a famous Brit sports star called Daley Thompson who was Black & his full brother was white, they shared a Black mum & a White dad.
Now her daughter is a doctor but her son went on to become a Cat Walk model with fashion houses such as Dior, Gucci, Versace, McQueen, in London, Paris, Milan & New York where he now lives & runs his own agency & STILL
Such an incredibly handsome guy!
Cheers
🇬🇧👧
@italia666 As I said before it would have been more logical to have Angela Bruce as Fiona's mother instead of Elizabeth Estensen. Angela Bruce who is 25 years older than Angela Griffin has the same colour skin in the same shade of brown and Angela Bruce was born in Leeds the same as Angela Griffin. When Angela Bruce played Sandra Ling in the hospital drama Angels she played a similar character to Fiona Middleton.
