- Quick little how to from Mart. I clean some rust from a chrome bumper. Quick and easy using things you might already have at hand. It would be good to wash it off after and wax it.

You know what works the best? Getting your son to do it while you have a soda!! Nice video. Thank you.
Yeah, lefty that's the best plan. Trying to get my sons to work on the car was like pushing rope. The car sold some time ago to an enthusiastic young owner who has taken great care of it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hello Mart, what a great video. Im currently restoring an old Rascal 388s mobility scooter with a chrome front bumper. Your method will work really well. Thanks for taking the time to make your video. Love and light from Bonnie Scotland. Paul.👍👍👍👍
Worked for me today, thanks a lot for the tip!!!! Very effective and very cheap!
That's great, Splash. Glad you found it useful!
Worked mint on my 04 Silverado bumper. Thanks!
Thanks for commenting, Tyler. Glad it helped.
Beautiful!! I can’t wait to try this on my antique barber chair chrome base!! Ty ty!! Hello 👋🏽 from Minneapolis, Minnesota!!!😁
Hello from Solihull in England! Thanks for stopping by.
Did it work for you, Sharon? I am planning to try the same..
Awesome!! Doing that tomorrow!🎉
Thank you so much, now a little bit of chrome polish sealer and it will be good for a few years.
Yes, a little care goes a long way.
I've done this sort of thing for many years, only I'd use a two-step trick, first with foil and vinegar (no Coke), then wash and dry. The vinegar helps dissolve the rust in the pits. Then after the bumper is cleaned and dried, do it again with kerosene or WD-40. The rust pits will end up packed with bits of aluminum (aluminium for you lads across the pond) embedded in them which helps keep the rust from coming back AFTER you wax the bumper when you're finished removing the rust. Wax it twice and really pack it in. Not only will the foil bits tend to pack the pits left by the rust, they help to "blend" the finish into the chrome which covers/hides the pits. The wax helps keep moisture out... remember, chrome is porous and if it was plated cheap (without the proper three-process plating) it's gonna rust sooner or later because moisture is going to seep through the chrome and find its way onto the steel base. Waxing any bumper will help preserve it regardless of whether it's got rust pitting or not. This video is The Way to do it... no steel wool.
Brilliant advice! Cheers 🤘🏼
Marvelous, as you say. Wonderful & informative piece of valuable advice! Thank you!
Glad you found it useful, Peter. Thanks for watching.
Cheerio mate good bit of advise indeed
Astonishing! I was amazed with the results! You saved me alot of money on products to do what I would have hoped for by just doing this. Thank you much for taking the time to post this. Hello from Texas!
That's great to hear. I've tried it a couple of times and it does work very well. Thanks for watching. Mart.
Hello Texas, this is BC in Canada. It turns out that it works really good.
Thanks for the vid! Will be trying this on some parts of my Honda CT110 tomorrow!
Thanks Clayton. Hope it goes well.
Simply awesome lol thanks from Canada
Thanks mc. Glad you liked it.
Amazing hack! Definitely sharing this gem 👍🏻 Many thanks to you, Mart. Sub'd and watching for the notifications.

Great how to tip mart . Nice plate on the mini too👍
Thanks EC this little throw away video is my most popular one.
Thank you for the great tip. I'm gonna use it on the chrome on my motorbike. 👍
Cheers. I hope it works well for you.
@@MartsGarage It worked beautifully. 👍 Thanks heaps. 😃
Thanks a lot this was amazing result.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for dropping in.
Good video. Mick showed up when the work was finished.
Bloomin' typical! (Actually it's Meg but thanks for mentioning the dog.) She shows up now and then in my videos.
I used a very smelly GP66 product, worked well on the stained leather of that chair, but not the chrome!! Lol not to mention it’s hard to breathe that product. So I sat down and looked around and here you are!! Cheers 🥂!!
Cheers Sharon. Hope it works out well for you. I like those old fashioned chairs.
Huge Thanks from India. I love my Royal Enfield bike and it was getting dull due to age. I was thinking about replacing Chrome parts, but now I have brought back the shine because of your simple hack. Sharing this with everyone Chrome Head
Thanks Vineet. Glad it worked well for you.
Thanks! Will be using this trick on some of my projects.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video thanks for sharing it's very useful
Glad it was helpful!
It works Ive just removed rust from the chrome bars, just need some effort on the scrubbing.
Thanks Terence. I'm glad you found it helpful. It's only cosmetic, but the improvement can be quite dramatic.
Used this on the all the chrome trim pieces holding up the headliner in my truck! That rust was all over the place. Now they look brand new.
Brilliant! Thanks for watching.
@@MartsGarage Thanks for making the video, I never would’ve known until I saw this
Brilliant. You said it plainly enough, just cosmetics. The reason for the rust is still going to be there so you may have to do it again and again. But one didn't have to find another bumper, spend more than the cost of aluminum foil and the rest of their Coca-Cola, take this one off, put the new one on etc. Thank you for; 3 years ago deciding to make a video. Your dog is beautiful! 😁
Thanks for the comments. Meggie is a beautiful dog and by coincidence she is 10 years old today!
BRILLIANT !
What a difference :) quick cheap and it works !
Thanks for commenting, Don.
It works, thank u a lot. you saved my money
Cheers Sanjaya. Glad you found it helpful. Mart.
dude you just saved me from buying a new bumper thank you so much
That's great, thanks for watching. I try and share tips and tricks when I can.
Thanks for the tip
Thanks for watching, Mimi.
Jason Statham is teaches us car care. 😜
Ha ha thanks for that. I think.
Sounds just like him🤣🤣
I felt like my bumpers are now shiny, but I also got my a$$ beat
It tickled me so much when you giggled as you held up the pepsi max. Great video and personality. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Janelle I just used some dregs I found in the fridge.
Matching accent and car registration. Cool!
(OG is Birmingham by the way for them as don't know).
Yeah, that number was on a 300E I bought back in the 80s. My wife drove it for years and we swapped the plate onto each successive car she had. The plate ended up on the mini when my son had it. The 300E van did come from Birmingham.
Mate, top notch bit of advice. Just pulled an old bass guitar to bits and all the chromed parts were tarnished to buggery. Your trick (I used Cif instead of Coke. didn't have any about) got them all looking great again! Thank you Mart!
Glad you found it helpful Pete.
looked up this video because I'm doing the exact same thing
HOLY COW ! Takes just seconds.🤯 That's AWESOME ! Thank you for posting. Good Vibes 👣
Thanks for dropping by, Coby. I hope it works out well for you.
Looks like it works pretty well on rust. I never had much luck with it but then I didn't add the coke. I've had better success with steel wool and diesel fuel. Spent hours with that mix on the 52 Merc and saw a huge improvement.
Good tip-Thanks
Thanks pradaman, you're welcome.
I will try this soon on a good ornament I just bought all rusty
Hope it works out well, Gerald.
Bloody amazing, this, mate!!! Thanks for the idea! (shame it doesn't work on the bodywork!!)
I once owned a 1970 Austin America back in the late 70's.
Not many of those around now, I imagine. Thanks for watching.
Good work
Thanks Mousa.
I just watch a very labor-intensive video that did the same thing, but took lots of products and a lot more work. Your video makes it look like child's play. Send the kids out with some soda and aluminum foil. (Or is that aluminium, ha ha.) Drink all you want, just clean up Daddy's wheels before you come back in, would you? Thanks, kids.
I'm going to try this tomorrow. It can't be that easy!
Thanks for the vid! I'll post my results tomorrow.
Cheers Tony. I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me. Bear in mind it is purely cosmetic, to make it look better. There is nothing to stop the rust coming back after a while, but for a quick hit it can make a big improvement.
Works great 👍
Thanks Daniel.
Thanks I will try this on chrome shower rod that is rusty .
May be try to put car wax to prevent rust from happening again.
The product called 🐢 in North America.
Beautiful dog 🐕 you have.
Thanks Magda. Yes, Meggie is lovely to look at.
I use this on my motorbike aluminium works brilliant
Nice work, Enfield, Thanks for watching and commenting.
Put some thick black stripe above the bumper slightly below the trunk door to prevent rust.
I sold the car a while ago, Edward, The new owner has smartened it up a lot. I still see it around locally.
Came across this by accident. Wow, amazed by the results, great video. I'm curious if you could maybe take a spray can of clear coat and go over it. I'm sure it'd take longer for the rust to come back, but unsure if it'd give the chrome a dull matte look instead of shiny.
Thanks for commenting, David. I don't know about the clear. I'm not an expert on this, I just tried it and it was working so I thought I'd do a quick video. Even though off topic from my normal content it is by far my most popular video!
Trying this right now on my 95 Silverado
Hope it went well, Xynon.
Well... Did it work brother?
Great tip. I shan't be drinking cherry pepsi anymore😂
Hi Roger. Yeah, I agree. I did see the dog having a lick of the bowl though, even after using it to clean the chrome!
It looks good what are you dipping it in I'm going to try it can you let me know because I got Chrome the queen of my own and I was wondering if you can let me know what your dipping it in so I know the try it how you're doing it thank you I appreciate it
Coca Cola ideally, but pepsi max cherry in this case. Thanks for watching.
Just a guess, but doesn't Coke contain phosphoric acid, which is a corrosion inhibitor under some conditions?
Clever stuff! I wonder how much the coke is adding? Be interesting to see if just crumpled tin foil & water would achieve the same result.
I don't know, Mal. people have commented that water also works. Thanks for watching.
The soft drink isn’t doing anything more than any other liquid would. While there is some acid in soft drinks, it’s really, really weak. Dedicated, purpose built rust removing acids require a much larger volume and hours of exposure to work on rust. This is simply a mechanical polishing using a softer metal than the chrome to scrape fouling off the surface. Same principle as polishing steel using very fine steel wool. This is a good tip. But you can omit the cola and use water or oil.
Heck, it worked.
Yes it did!
amazing
Glad you think so!
i like your doggo
Thanks Omer. She pops up in a lot of my videos.
@@MartsGarage cuz she is well aware of her screen beauty
@@buttflattery Thanks Omer.
Put a rusty nail in a glass of cola and see the results - bit scary drinking the stuff! Thanks for the tips!
lol thats why you drink it with straw is better , once it soak those teeth , its gone
AWESOME
Cheers Martin. Hope it helps you.
Yo this is crazy 😝
great job. never thought of using tinfoil and coke.
Thanks Kenneth. It was just something I remembered from somewhere and I thought I'd give it a go.
If you added it to the paint, would it rub the paint off??
I don't know, Tommy. I wouldn't fancy trying it.
Don't use on paint.
wow smart, it works well, i didn't know that. why so few likes and comments?
Not enough subscribers.
NO FUCKING WAY ? ... That is totally amazing, and people pay loads of money for fancy metal cleaning products !!
F'kin Way! Lol Thanks for watching.
Does sand paper works??
Hi Bella. No, you must not use sandpaper. It will seriously scratch the chrome. Thanks for watching.
How different result between coke and Pepsi sir
Love from thailand
Thanks for watching and commenting. I don't know the answer. Maybe give it a try yourself. I don't think there would be any noticeable difference.
Kindly suggest how to remove the scratches on similar chrome material
Sorry Joseph, haven't a clue. Can it even be done?
@@MartsGarage although The only way i know is trying to Re-chrome it back again however was only in search of other way of fixing scratches on chrome aside from using the re-chroming solution cos it’s kinda expensive to re-chrome any car bumper or fender
You'd think the foil would scratch the chrome, but it doesn't seem to.
Ever tried this with scotch bright?
No, Mate. I haven't, but I think the abrasive in the scotch brite might scratch the chrome too much. Just a gut feeling, no experience. People have used 0000 steel wool with good effect.
Q : will the rust come again ? Or, should we coat it with rust prevention polish after clean it from rust ?
Hello Lelouche. The rust will come back again. You can't cure it, just make it look better for a while. If you have smething that you can apply that will delay the process that can only be a good thing. Thanks for watching. Mart.
You don't need anything but water with the aluminum foil. Works just as well.
Thanks. I might try that next time.
Brother what's that material is it Pepsi or diesel ? And that paper name
It's just pepsi. Coca cola is what is normally recommended. The material is common aluminium foil. Thanks for watching.
@@MartsGarage thank you sir
Tin foil and water works fine too.
Thanks Lise.
Yeah la voiture de mister Bean😂
Yes, Nicolas, Like Mr Bean.
It’s crazy we drink rust remover. Haha
Ha ha yeah. Might as well do something useful with the dregs.
Must be the cherry flavor additive : )
Shh! That's the secret ingredient that "they" don't want you to know about!
Spray some high gloss clear coat on it.
How does it look now
We sold the car, Rick, so I don't know, but thanks for watching.
Nice mr.bean car
And nice dog
Thanks. It was a cool little car. It has a new owner now and looks quite smart.
Thanks, yes, she's a beauty.
Ahhh.. yes. Pepsi max cherry 😌
Yes, it's good stuff.
heyyyy Mr Beans
Heyyyy Joe Velasquez.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This would be great except I don't have any Aluminium foil, only have Aluminum foil
Ha ha yeah, Charles, you'll just have to make do with that!
@@MartsGarage lol. they must be extremely similar as the aluminum foil worked great. Thanks for the video though, didn't know this would work.
Glad it helped Charles. I did the bumpers on my T-Bird and all i had was some lemonade. That worked too! Thanks for watching.
John stadam talking..the action hero
No way.. are y’all serious in the comments or are y’all messing with us? Because i just got a 1979 F100 and the chrome parts are good, they just need a little restoration. And im about to try this lol
Tell us how it goes, Mario.
Ha ha it works bro
Ace. Glad you found it useful.
Unintentional asmr here
Ha ha thanks Vince.
@@MartsGarage Thank you mate, love the content
So this works with coke?
Yes, Chris. People say just water too. I haven't tried that, though.
I would get started on.... the real rust on the car....
You're right, Fred. I sold the car not long after the video was made. The new owner has done a wonderful job. He has restored all the bodyshell and done a lot of other things besides.
GREAT!
Thanks for dropping by, Clemens.
Will this work on my teeth ?
Drinking lots of fizzy pop will do something to your teeth for sure. Not sure if it would be a good thing.
Phosphoric acid is in the drink, fyi.
Try 0000 steel wool lad.
The foil and the pop were in the kitchen so that was what I used. I've heard other people mention the 0000 steel wool. I didn't want to scratch the surface too much.
@@MartsGarage 0000 doesn't.
Doesn’t have to be coke. Anything containing phosphoric acid will work.
Cheers Dub.
doesn't it make scratches?
It does not tend to scratch it, but remember you would only do this on chrome that is in bad condition. It is not a fix but does make a visible improvement.
I gotta stop drinking soda
Hey if you cut yourself on the rusty bumper, just put some coke in the cut... 🙃
shame they did away with all the chrome and the glass on the lights so easy to clean
Yeah, Andrew, some of those plastic lenses fog over something awful. Thanks for watching.
@@MartsGarage Yeah I have tried so many things to get them clean maybe I should try the tin foil on them
@@andrewhunt3800 You talking about plastic light lenses? You can buy kits to carefully sand with very fine abrasive and then polish the lens. I wouldn't recommend aluminium foil because I only ever tried it on chrome.
@@MartsGarage Yeah I have seen all that on RUclips but thank you
You dont need coke, I just use water
Cheers Steve. I was just trying something I'd heard about. If I need to do it again I might try just water. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yeah next time you get yourself some Jack Daniels and enjoy that coke and scrub away with some water I have an old Triumph that my dad built in the sixties and I use the aluminum foil and water and sparkle dim rims right up they were pretty rusty too luckily it was just surface rest some some pits but can't do anything about the pits
It's cause it's contains phosphoric acid
Thanks Sroor. yes, the acid does the trick.
Don’t use this on reasonable looking chrome : it will give scratches
Yes, this is very much a last ditch effort.
