Can't believe skaters were like: ''nah flying in the air like that is kook now!'' at this exact moment in time. I aknowledge early 90's have been crucial for the blooming of street skating in general. But the total rejection of such an amazing discipline as vert is bugs my mind. Hosoi had to face so much shit afterwards. Yes he mismanaged his own with drugs. But it was also because of the total rejection of all of his work by his own community. Good thing nowadays we respect and give the spotlight to every disciplines in skateboarding.
It’s not that simple, vert only fell out of fashion because almost no one on Planet Earth had access to a vert ramp so no kid could relate to it. As a kid when you go skateboarding you go outside your house, drop the board down and ride it. Kids only saw vert ramps in the magazines and videos, never in real life.
@@robfromvan Rob, you hit the nail on the head! I saw vert in videos and magazines and thought it was amazing but the closest vert ramp was an hour drive away (too young to drive) and cost money to Skate. The local school yard with stairs and embankments was free and a couple minutes walk away. Almost no one hated on vert, it's just that it was so niche compared to the asphalt that surrounded us.
@@SJK-uc6lf if you look up the movie called Radical Moves on RUclips, it’s about the Expo 86 pro contest. That vert ramp after Expo was located where I would have to take 3 buses from my house to skate it. Once I get there I was too scared to even drop in. It was so large I couldn’t even roll in. Since then, as an adult, I have learned to drop in on vert and at one point learned to do an axle stall on vert also, but this is years later. Back then we just skated whatever was around us. Painted curbs, banks, slick parking blocks, the curb outside my house, etc. Even the nearest skatepark to skate bowl (skateparks we’re all bowls then w/ no vert) was 45 mins. subway and bus ride to get to, so yeah back then it was all street.

It's amazing how far it's come though... nowadays, you watch a vid of someone like Shaun White, most of these "tricks" would almost be considered like "filler", they're doing 360's and 540's multiple times in one run, only time you see grabs and stuff are just for setup before they do something insane.
It's very diabolical how Tony Hawk orchestrated a series of events which led to Christian Hosoi's downfall. Tony Hawk seems all innocent and makes himself out to be an "underdog" type character, but he is actually a sinister Machiavellian character.

Hosoi and Tony Hawk took the torch from the ZBoyz and took skating, especially air to another level. Dogtown rules 🐶
I still have my original Hosoi from the 80's... Still ride it once in a while. It's the only board I didn't break.
The man just flows with style! Tail grab nose bone, alley oop backside Smith, proper McTwists, big old body jars and Madonnas to name a few.

At that time you had to be a rich kid to have access to a vert ramp. It's only natural that skaters rejected it. Most of us were poor.

“Hosoi Rules!”
The absolute most sickest style!…talk about an air show!!!
Hosoi flew man
The best skater ever!
Hosio was my first board black with the sunrays
thanks for this video. skating from these times is the only original !
The secret to staying young is not medicine, but what you believe about yourself.
Highest dude EVER at the time - true air pilot.
Alva - Discovered flight
Hosoi - Flight in the jet age
Hawk - Dawn of anti-gravity
Hosoi was my favorite ramp skater, Natas was my fav street. Great times.
That stussy shirt everyones been looking for 🙄 since 92, baller
The ROCKET MAN, yes, he'll alway be!!
Before it all went pear-shaped.
What a RIPPER.
Style for years!
The ROCKET MAN, he'll always be!!
Best style ever❤
True icon to the sport , one of the best of the best , no one went higher
Christian Hosoi did bust lofty airs. But Steve Caballero beat him in the highest air contest with a 11 FT air.At the Ragging Waters ramp in 1987.

Look at Shaun Whites “amazing x game” thumbnail. He looks like children of the corn.
honestly i get way more stoked from grabs though.

He was still getting better and more progressive at this time..... Then he disappeared????...... Very upsetting
Just imagine if he kept progressing from here instead of getting into drugs.

The styles of Hosoi and Sandro Diaz look very similar.

Team Hosoi!
「技のトニーホークには、高さで勝負するしか無かった」(映画 ボーンズブリゲードより)

対してトニーは、4連続 540を簡単に成し遂げる。
それだけ、トニーに比べて 余裕が無かった事が 伺える。
