The Cosmic Horror of Arknights

  • Arknights has some of the most varied storytelling of any fictional universe. It is only natural that it would eventually engage with the themes of cosmic horror. In this video. Though it seems incompatible with a gacha game, you'll be surprised to see how interesting and terrifying some of the concepts are.

There is something uncanny yet profoundly tranquil about the assimilation of all living beings into a single unified will, striving toward the peak of evolution while no longer divided by individuality.

it’s the complete lack of nature’s law where there’s no predator and prey, in a way it’s like watching everything swallowed into something like heaven, then it ever ascends until it becomes one with their environment in everlasting equilibrium.
but then again that’s apparently impossible because universal law would swallow any environment eventually which ultimately forces it to swallow even the universe, by the end the internals that keeps it alive becomes a universe of it’s own.
wether it can beat all universal laws like humans did nature’s law in smaller scale we don’t know. existential crisis hits hard

And then there is also Sami and whole deal with an Infinite Icefield.
    Imagine
You a member of scientific expedition with a task of maping an area in far north, far beyond from civilization.
You feel confident, as you have plenty of supplies, cutting edge survey equipment, trusted companions and even help of local guide.
You brush away a warning of your guide about strange happenings in the area, deeming them being no more than a baseless rumors.
Team gets on foot and expedition is started.
It pretty warm (only just 3°C above zero) and so far everything goes smoothly.
Few weird nightmares at night wouldn't shake high spirits of the team, as those are just dreams.
You keep going, through the forests and mashes, trying to map the route, but something seems off, probably equipment is not that great.
You keep going. You start notice things.
Symbols appears carved into trees, but not by humans, nor by animals.
Nightmares not only got worse, but also share a same repeated theme between team members.
Maps from previous expeditions stoped to make any sense.
Some people reported seeing strange moving shadows, but photos and videos shows nothing.
Weather conditions seems off. It is not only lack of sun and freezing wind - the atmospheric pressure seems.. unstable?
There was an issue with routine supplies check. The man responsible for a task is technician and worked with numbers his whole life, but now he couldn't count to ten...
Team members keep having minor injury incidents that slowly but steadily drains medical supplies.
Equipment keep malfunctioning, despite constant checks and maintenance.
One of the men seems to be caught in some dirt black rain, but *there was no rain*
One of team members got separated, but fortunately returns safe with some supplies on hands.
They claim to find those supplies in one of the rooms in old cabin in forest.
You search said cabin, but *there are no rooms in here*
Barometer shows rapid changes in atmospheric pressure. As if you suddenly happen to be high in mountains, but in the next minute it drops bellow sea level. You getting dizzy, it is hard to breathe.
Your understanding of reality starts to warp.
*Shortest route between two points is no longer a straight line*
Language you speak at your whole life now sounds more like a random sounds.
*But the voice in your head keep calling your name. Your.. name?*
You can do longer believe your eyes, as those dark shadows keep getting closer and closer.
*A black blood is dripping from the trees...*
    *Do trees have.. blood?*
Your body screams that something is wrong, while your consciousness fighting the chaos to decipher the meaning of a loud yell:
"Don't look at it! Don't listen to it! Don't respond to it!
    Get out of here... run!"
Your try to move your legs, but you.. forget how to.
Your legs? They should be there. They always been there. Why can't you feel them?
Feel what? How that supposed to feel?
In response to such confusion your crying brain reflexively moves your body to look at your legs..
But you see your *own back from behind*
And in that instance, the pity thing known as "reality" *Collapses* completely.

Now I'm curious if the seaborn took over the world and then one of them got corrupted by the demon (saw them or something idk).

The whole Seaborn story is what hook me to Arknights, even though I usually dislike catastrophic stories where everyone dies Arknights approach is amazing because the main story is not centered in the Seaborns, the main story is about exploring the countries of Terra and their internal and external problems, everybody is so focussed in their own problems and are oblivious of the terrors that Terra have to offer. This really makes the seaborn scary because you know a lot can be lost if the seaborn decided to attack.

    • @FirasDuqarael_
      @FirasDuqarael_ Месяц назад +2

In actuality, Arknights lore is about facing God himself (mentioned in Zwillingstürme) and some 'creatures' called the Observers, who practically exist and don't exist at the same time; also present the nothingness itself that is the equilibrium with existence itself.
All else are a 'small' conflict in comparison.

and the mundane will still live and strife for tomorrow. the indomitable humanity spirit against all odds, what makes it better is that we haven't got to the point of wh40k yet for the humanity or dune in which the emperor of mankind assured the survival pf the species, it's guaranteed to have the spirit under them.
but in ak the ppl are still fighting for daily life, the height of idealism in the face utter horror and seemingly unsolvable problems is what really sells it. thus why the day to day struggle story often appreciated more than it's cosmic one, like Jessica's

That's probably why Kjerag's storyline is appealing to a lot of people, including myself. Enciodes and Gnosis studied in Victoria and got to learn so much more about Terra than they ever could of if they stayed in Kjerag. Now that they're leading the country being backed by Enya and Kjera with the Browntails and Paleroches, they've managed to secure partnerships with Kazimierz, Columbia, and Rhodes Island. At this rate, Kjerag might surpass Laterano in being a diplomatic power.

The Seaborn are a great piece of cosmic horror primarily because they aren't hostile. You mentioned this before, but they aren't motivated by anything further than their own survival & they will only fight so long as that survival is threatened & they cannot reason with their opposition. I think that's something a lot of writers of cosmic horror get too focused on is that the entity has to be some kind of threat. There will be some form of villain that wants to harm you rather than something that is actively unaware it's even causing pain & its changes are discomfort. The Seaborn are great interpretations of that kind of passive horror that I feel works with cosmic horror.
Even with this baseline what really makes the cosmic horror of AK work is that it's not something that's constantly considered by the world. There's a few large scale apocalypse level events that could happen that simply wipe all sapient life off the face of Terra, but that's not something that's always considered. We have events where people aren't just working directly against these extinction events like the demons, the false sky, the seaborn, or the Leviathans. They're in both the foreground & background wherewe have mentions to them like in Lonetrail with Friston, Hortus De Escapismo featuring The Church of the Deep as an answer to the catastrophes, Originium, and famine rather than just as an enemy, and IS4 finally giving us insight as to what demons the Wendigos & Emperor's Blades were made to fight. While they are in the periphery there's more to the world that keeps it human & reminds us how normal the people that will be impacted by this are. There's a lot of normalcy in terms of what characters we see even with the outlandish scenarios & their problems can be mundane. Even in Lonetrail half the stories within are dedicated to talking more about the faults of the scientific community's ties with the military industrial complex rather than the cosmic horror. The world is wide enough that it doesn't feel like you're buying into a horror game/property, you're walking into a world where these are a part of nature and it ranges from beautiful to gruesome to horrifying.

(I also wanted to talk a little bit about the seaborne too but didnt want to make that original comment too long so here’s this lmao)
I find the seaborne to be really interesting, exciting, and terrifying - a huge mass conscience capable of levelling down the entire world, every single nation of terra is completely helpless and their fate is going to be decided the moment the many need to expand more in order to continue to grow
Because at the moment they are not doing anything other than attacking Iberia, they could very well overthrow the world, so why haven’t they?
They truly only care about nutrition and reproduction, to expand and grow and evolve, but dont have the same greed or envy that the humans have, they feel no rush or desire to immediately target the entire world - simply because *they dont need to*
And like thats- i think thats just peak fiction LMAO
Because we’ve seen the Ursus empire expand and grow but none of it was by necessity, they thirsted for power
Columbia is rushing to develop their technology and science more and more to be the first to accomplish great things to amass all the knowledge in the universe as soon as possible, but what if the world is not ready for what is unknown yet? What if Saria was right to be worried of Kristen’s actions? What if shattering the barrier would’ve created a massive tragedy that brought down the end of the world? And all for what? To write down your findings in books?
And then the fact that the seaborne could literally do all of this in an instant with ease, and yet they dont, simply because they do not need to, is astonishing
Can you believe how crazy the Ursus empire and Columbia would be if they could get their greedy hands on a seaborne and understand them better? The things they would do if they had the knowledge and power these otherworldly creatures have?
I love arknights man its such a good fucking game

After i play Stultifera Navis and Expeditioner's Joklumarkar, now i know that "overkill" is not enough.

With this in mind, im guessing the final chapter of arknights is the last stand against the seaborn. We had the reunion arc, the victorian arc, and if arknights' live service is about to end, we will have a dedicated seaborn arc. It's possible this is the last chapters of arknights, because i cant imagine a conflict far greater than od the seaborn. Maybe the sami and it's shenanigans up north.
Now that i think about it, talos 2 of endfield is a different planet from terra if i remember it right. Is it because terra was engulfed by the seaborn, forcing its residents to migrate to talos 2, with a new problem called the blight?
Im excited as to what the writers will cook for future arknights stories, and how will they solve the problem of the inevitability to introduce bigger conflict than the previous one to continue the rising of stakes.
Oh also, *how about you join us, the skadi's cult?*

What's also insane is that the Seaborns still remain as one of the hardest enemies to deal with even in today's standards gameplay wise if you don't have the necessary knowledge to counter them.
The Seaborns are capable of ending the world of Terra if they truly wanted to.

One more important thing about seaborn: they're literally infinitely adaptable! If seaborn view something as a threat, then they will try to defeat it, and it will be impossible to stop them because they adapt so fast. Seaborn are weak to fire? Give them a few days tops. You got a real nice wall to hide behind? They'll just start evolving limbs to climb up it. That sorta stuff.
Additionally, perhaps the most morbidly hilarious fact of the Seaborn is that _they weren't originally hostile_.
The AEgirians, yeah, those guys, were originally land dwellers, and they only started living underwater relatively recently. As it turns out, the Seaborn are fairly territorial, and the AEgirians literally colonizing the sea was met with heavy opposition. It's not that the Seaborn were inherently this cosmic threat to Terra, but rather that the _Terrans made the Seaborn adapt to be this threat_.
    Lone Trail spoilers below:
Seaborn were created by the pre-Terran progenitor race who did a bunch of stuff including make the supercomputer that made the Sankta the Sankta, create the fake sky and second moon on the planet, and have some link to Kal'tsit, an ageless being whose whole goal is to preserve Terra and prevent it from going to shit. The Seaborn's goal is to _destroy Originium_, the death cancer rock that is so prevalent in Terra it's how people power their microwaves and stuff.
So to be clear, Originium is such a threat that the absurdly powerful precursor thought it fit to create an infinitely adaptable super organism species in order to destroy it.
There's a cosmic horror here and it isn't the plant eldritch horror sea friends.
