late 80s, early 90s college radio was king, bands like REM, U2, 10,000 Maniacs, Sonic Youth, and The Smiths hit the scene, this was early REM and U2, it was epic and changed music, what a great time for music!
You are right, Cobain was a huge REM fan, and during Nirvana's rise, Kurt and Micheal Stipe became friends. REM were an enormous influence on most of the indie and alternative rock scenes of the 80s 90s and beyond.
Michael has said that he and Kurt were talking about collaborating on a project in the months before his death.
a song I love jamming on acoustic. I almost have that main riff down..one of my favorite REM songs.
Growing up as a teen in the '80's, REM was by far my favourite non-Canadian band. Still is.
Michael Stipe and R.E.M influenced most bands from the grunge scene that followed specifically Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 - that video is on the R.E.M request list I sent you on PayPal 👍🏻
*Rory.* Thanks 😊 This song was all over college radio stations around 1985... before 'alternative music' exploded (more broadly) as a recognized genre over the next few years.
I can easily think of 20 R.E.M. songs that are all you, all day long, btwn Michael Stipe's melodies and lyrics and those Peter Buck riffs.
Hi Lydia - not sure if you got my reply earlier (kept getting removed 🤷🏼♂️) the doc is free on RUclips it’s called “A Skin Too Few - The Days of Nick Drake” essential for any ND fan! 😊
@@ljc1520Thanks. 👍 I think the doc I saw a few yrs ago was "A Stranger Among Us - Searching for Nick Drake"
@@LydellC yeah I’ve seen that one, this one is much more personal - narrated by his parents and sister Gabrielle and features interviews with Joe Boyd, Paul Weller etc. it’s beautifully done, moving 👏🏻
@@ljc1520 The one I saw featured family intvws, so perhaps this was it. But will chk it out either way. Thx.
@@LydellC yeah I’ve seen “A Stranger Among Us” as well - this is a different documentary. I may request it for the channel once we’ve shared our requests 😊
Yeah!!!! Driver 8! THANKS! Lydia and Rory!! I can hear the Smiths comparison here- if not in all that lovely guitar work that pulls you through the whole song. Maybe it's Stipes slight accent when singing (especially his Rs) that tell me it's an American band. This is one I love to have on repeat.
😊
Cobain and Stipe were quite close. Stipe was crushed over his death. You should watch Eddie Vedder induct REM
Yet another amazing album. And yes, he did influence Kurt, in fact they were very good friends.
Rory piecing together alt rock history in his head 😁 Gotta love it!
ahhh many years since I've heard this... what's wrong with me
Great song from the best American band.
I think Cobain cited Michael Stipe and REM along with the Pixies as huge influences. Don’t know where I read that
That's common knowledge. Also, when he died REM's "Automatic For The People" was playing on the stereo he had in the greenhouse.
ALMOST HAD A "DO YOU FEEL THE REAPER" IN THE BACKING GUITAR PART BY OYSTER CULT. I KNOW SILLY ME!! I ADORE R.E.M. MICHAEL STRIPE IS A UNIQUE FRONTMAN. IM PRETTY PEARL JAM WAS INFLUENCED BY THEM TOO. MICHAEL STRIPE INDUCTED NIRVANA IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. AWESOME REACTION RORY 💙 AND THANK YOU LYDIA FOR THIS AWESOME REQUEST!! 😊🩷🔥🤘✌️
This was one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar!
always makes me think of Speed Racer for some reason
Yes. REM influenced Kurt.
