  • Your dad's an airbender, your mom's a waterbender. What kind of bender are you?

Cool video, I think bending might go beyond Mendelian inheritance though. I remember an episode that had identical twins, one was an earth bender, the other one wasn't.

I thought about this too! Bumi becoming an airbender did seem more spiritual than genetic as a result of Korra opening the spirit portals. But it’s definitely a valid an interesting point!

This is great 😂. Would love to see your script if possible. I'm trying to learn more about MCMC and this would be a fun case to look at.

I think bending must be epigenetic since in LoK nonbenders become airbenders, and since it is possible to take a bender's bending ability away like Aang did and Amon was kinda able to do. Maybe you should try to change your Monte Carlo simulation to add some noise to account for these factors. 🤓

    Hi Dear,
I have subscribed your channel for a while and i found it very informative.
when i was browsing your channel I saw that you have made many videos about rime series and they were amazing.
I have a question about features of time series, in image processing we use gabor, sobel and .... filters for feature extraction.
now I have a question, can we use these filters for time series to extract feature or not? If yes, we can use it for univariate or multivariate time series?
I really appreciate if You guide me

Wow! I used a lot of your videos about programming design patterns to get through a course a year ago. Did not expect to meet you again in a totally different topic!

This is an interesting hypothesis, but this methods seems to allow for the number of "benders" that are born to be far too high. While I do remember that a lot of people had the ability it was usually a very small percent of the population when the group was not isolated in the middle of nowhere. Another factor to consider is that this method of hereditary transfer would not provide for a legitimate explanation of how 1 person could be born with the ability to perform all 4 types of bending, while NO ONE is born with more than 1 and less than 4... ie no one is born with a combination of 2 or 3 powers.
(Not withstanding the other aspect of re-incarnation)... So, an additional mechanism must be brought into play to allow 1 or 4 but not 2 or 3,.. .and of course, sometimes mutations such as blood bending, metal bending etc. Additionally, Metal Benders are also Earth benders, but as a subcategory, also have the ability to bend metal... which suggests that perhaps each ability has the possibility to carry some mutation or perhaps, it could just be related to skill.
To Summarize: The current theory as proposed is interesting, but over produces benders... and doesn't account for the Avatar (4 bending skills), as well as doesn't explain why there aren't "mixes" of 2 or 3 bending skills found more frequently, and doesn't explain why the Avatar is unusually rare in combination with all those limits.
(BTW, thanks for the video... and this is a lot cooler thought experiment that I originally thought it would be). It might be worth playing around with the recessive gene idea again.
Another thought is that bending doesn't appear to always be demonstrated even if one carries the Gene for it, for example, Bumi didn't have bending until after the convergence? So, this might mean that certain combinations of genes do allow for "bending" but that there might not be enough "spiritual energy" for those genes to work properly or whatever those genes do to get the benefit of the energy they have normally. In other words, there might be a "strength" factor beyond the mere presence / absence of the gene, there may be a gene that accounts for how strong the trait is as well.
Of course, the "probability" that the Author(s) considered deep level genetic transfer and multi-factorial inheritance seems somewhat doubtful... rather they probably over-simplified it as Bender families tend to make benders but not always... benders usually make benders of the same kind, and if mom and dad are different benders there's a chance the child could be either the mom's skill, dad's skill or neither... and likely they had no other genetic thought process. I am not sure it would be possible to explain (at least thru genetics) how the Avatar could possibly cycle from Fire to Air to Water to Earth with each reincarnation into different "nations"... that have no real genetic similarity... without adding some external factor.
