These dudes have been around before hipster resurfaced as a term. I won't deny that, like, 90% of the people at the show I just went to looked crazy hipster...but these guys aren't just riding some wave, they've been making this sort of music and doing what they want as artists for a long time.
This is just another one of yonis rants. He touches on a few things from the benefits and pressure of fame to coping with the expectations of your audience. Speak on his feelings of apathy in the face of his achievements, and even some philosophical shit like morality, fate, and death. There's a lot to unpack here lol
I was listening to this in high school why is it not over a million views. Shame people sleep on good music. Still good all these years later. That’s talent.
+MichaelLeroi they are really really clever and the structure of them is fantastic.. but I have no idea what he's talking about.. maybe because I come from a small rural village in the middle of no where and for most of my adult life I haven't had a TV.. it's like the best poem written in an alien language
I'm still learning meaning in Why? songs from a decade ago. The only artist I can think of that's similar in this way is Aesop Rock. Different moments just seem to click with different points in life.
Just check out more guys from anticion. Or dilated peoples Atmosphere People Under the Stairs CunningLynguists Dose1 Sole Sage Francis Gang Starr (not my favorite) Aesop is awesome. You're right. But...after one album, you've heard his schtick/gimmick. Not that he's after something. Those words imply a negative connection that isn't there. Not really.
he seems like a smart dude. i met him once, very likely he would never remember; but he was cordial, well spoken and a decent dude. so, yeah: TLDR, I like this song.
there's some aspect of this video that I love. the idea of people just letting lose and not giving a shit maybe, or whatever else I see. anyway, I love the song and Yoni.
I hate it that u can't really find a lot of songs of them by googling or typing it in youtube ._. was looking for this song forever, its incrdible! It should at least have like a million views ^^
[Intro] His hooves in dirt pound And eat up ground He cannot remain bound When the trumpets sound [Verse 1] Let's review some recent facts I make decent cash, I'm a minor star And we can't last if she don't drive a hybrid car I scribble vapid raps on your flyer backs The word is I purchased a refurbished Mac G4 Pull up to critical mass in a gas-guzzling Ford Just to ask you when next your rock outfit performs Before you tell me the fact, I'm down the road yelling back Please post it on the Whole Foods bulletin board I'd earn a lick of respect in slum art for sure But I threw out my lumbar picking up checks I'm so numb, Lord, yes, despite how I'm blessed I'm destined to end up a slum lord depressed Come by, poorly dressed, your address on the first Hum something under my breath that half resembles some words And like a bird in a suit cut for a brutish bear Back out of there bowing like a Jew in prayer [Hook] I'll never shirk this first world curse A steady hurt and a sturdy purse [Verse 2] A small dark bard, I'll give an inch to start Then leave you home dreaming of the whole nine yards Leave you home dreaming, believing that you'd seen me Loose skin breathing like a cathedral at evening Screaming like a demon in the Garden of Eden Missing what parts that a stork in its beak brings But even what an evil man thinks is really pink And on his insides, doesn't mean you shouldn't pull his card out So what if a man blinks in Morse code while he sings if he sings his heart out? Everybody's gotta get paid I'd say "far out, no way" Frankly, I'd be amazed But a patriot would save the day Make the hitch, help C.I.A What's bad, what's good A complicated man is misunderstood, even to himself Acutely unaware what's in a shallow breath of air And long exhale of something else [Hook] [Verse 3] Two sips, instant drip, Sanka mud New corpus publicist, thanks ya bud As hundred bucks worth of wordy blogger thugs Come forth forthwith to four seasons aflood To morbidly orbit your toilet like hornets abuzz Forming above like buzzards in love When you first wake up, spitting sick from the gut And shitting black blood at six Then you wonder why I'm high up, sitting, yup The blundering braggart From a covered wagon spitting under the vagrants in gutters What, does it make me evil? Am I a feeble deranged fuck? Cause Jesus would and I would not drive the needle exchange truck? Well if I'm out of luck, I'm still pitching notes through this throat Pissing fears and hopes through the ears of folks listening No matter what, batter up enough of this nonsense You can gather up the contents of the catcher's cup and suck [Verse 4] You kneel and squint your eyes and cup your hands against the window Just to see who rides, to get a glimpse inside the limo Have some self-respect and exercise some tact While I supply the info that you lack One must pay the frat fee to enjoy the fat-free snacks Strippers, roofies, and six-packs, and groupies with big breasts Sending out mass texts asking who's next To get his lance waxed in the wickedest sex acts Step back from the stretch, mack, and mind the gap With all due respect sir, there's a limited cap You'll need a ticket to kick it in the back Of this rented, tinted-out black Cadillac But I can tell by your polo slacks, Sebagos, and blank stare You're good for the total package and game to be back there But who am I to judge a man's heart by his yacht wear? And it scares me to death, yes, that I'm starting to not care [Hook] [Verse 5] Good and evil's often neither strength or flaw But sod in the seed of what you are A filthy silt stashed in a white silk sash Or a doula dove smashed in an airplane crash [Outro] I'll never shirk this first world curse A steady hurt and a sturdy purse A steady hurt and a sturdy purse
love the videos where people dance in sync, coreography rules expecially when is done by non-professional dancers and movements are not the usual ones. The song is great as well. So, here's my video fo 2012 summer
looks like it's disabled on this vid for some reason. strange. maybe this channel doesnt like exposition of opinion consensus. oh well. i think my remark would be drowned out by the majority of his audience who only probably know the last two albums or so. i wonder if they'd even like clouddead and whatnot.
This video gave me veganism so hard I spewed soy milk all over my Nintendo Switch while founding some shitty Calfornia based startup with my trust fund money. My wife's boyfriend likes it though.
Alopecia was a masterpiece (ES songs were essentially Alpocia B-sides). It was dark, witty, and exciting. Was anyone else utterly disappointed with the direction they took afterwards?
Nooo! Not "just"! Alopecia came out in 2008 and it is WAY better than this, rap-wise. I am super glad that this new stuff is getting people into Why?, but it just doesn't seem as honest anymore.I recommend checking out his earlier stuff :)
I hated MUMPS. Then they came around with 'Proactive Evolution' and 'This Ole King' for the new album and he's still got it. Thank goodness. I dunno what the fuck happened with Mumps. Trying too hard and sounded incredibly bland. Strawberries and Thirst were the only good songs on that album. i'm really looking forward to the new album.
Mumps threw me too, I was so into Alopecia that I thought it was the greatest thing I ever heard. I don't think I even got through Mumps. I might give them another try now though listening to this is a lot better than Mumps, Etc.
Yes, but this video is white and exclusive. It's not comparable to their earlier content. He's a hipster, it doesn't mean his art has to be hipster trash.
These dudes have been around before hipster resurfaced as a term. I won't deny that, like, 90% of the people at the show I just went to looked crazy hipster...but these guys aren't just riding some wave, they've been making this sort of music and doing what they want as artists for a long time.
Correct I saw Why? by himself in Anticon in 2002!
This is just another one of yonis rants. He touches on a few things from the benefits and pressure of fame to coping with the expectations of your audience. Speak on his feelings of apathy in the face of his achievements, and even some philosophical shit like morality, fate, and death. There's a lot to unpack here lol
Yup lol back in my space days for me and anticon lol uffie of course 🐶
you could take any 30 seconds of this video and make a gap commercial
this comment is iconic
When I read this comment he said "gap" at the exact time that I read it! Woah.
I was gonna say the same thing 💀
Hahahaha
To this day, I think that these are some of the best song/rap lyrics that have ever been written and recorded.
Video is kind of slack, but no doubt song is deep.
I was listening to this in high school why is it not over a million views. Shame people sleep on good music. Still good all these years later. That’s talent.
the more I listen to the lyrics, the more I realise how bloody clever they are!

There's so much packed in.....
Whenever I see people dancing in unison like that I picture myself standing off camera because I have no rhythm and was asked to leave
my man looks so happy, just playin his drums
there's some aspect of this video that I love.
the idea of people just letting lose and not giving a shit maybe, or whatever else I see.
anyway, I love the song and Yoni.
oh my jesus will you make me your friend, Jonathan? We met in Newport , like 2006, and I can sing. I cant dance, but how I do. ;) YONI WOLF
I hate it that u can't really find a lot of songs of them by googling or typing it in youtube ._. was looking for this song forever, its incrdible! It should at least have like a million views ^^
Does anyone else wish WHY? would release more music?
Yoni and Geti just released Testarossa. Check out Madeline.
Syncopated Knock - I'm all over it. :)
Not after that last album...
I asked when they were playing in Cincinnati again and Yoni replied with.......Yes, after our new album releases.
Your wish has been granted, look it up
This is a hella good song. How has my life span so many decades, and I’m only hearing this for the first time tonight
This song is too good. Why? never disappoints.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I like the graceful tango steps in the jumping flow of it all.
Exquisite to me
[Intro]
His hooves in dirt pound
And eat up ground
He cannot remain bound
When the trumpets sound
[Verse 1]
Let's review some recent facts
I make decent cash, I'm a minor star
And we can't last if she don't drive a hybrid car
I scribble vapid raps on your flyer backs
The word is I purchased a refurbished Mac G4
Pull up to critical mass in a gas-guzzling Ford
Just to ask you when next your rock outfit performs
Before you tell me the fact, I'm down the road yelling back
Please post it on the Whole Foods bulletin board
I'd earn a lick of respect in slum art for sure
But I threw out my lumbar picking up checks
I'm so numb, Lord, yes, despite how I'm blessed
I'm destined to end up a slum lord depressed
Come by, poorly dressed, your address on the first
Hum something under my breath that half resembles some words
And like a bird in a suit cut for a brutish bear
Back out of there bowing like a Jew in prayer
[Hook]
I'll never shirk this first world curse
A steady hurt and a sturdy purse
[Verse 2]
A small dark bard, I'll give an inch to start
Then leave you home dreaming of the whole nine yards
Leave you home dreaming, believing that you'd seen me
Loose skin breathing like a cathedral at evening
Screaming like a demon in the Garden of Eden
Missing what parts that a stork in its beak brings
But even what an evil man thinks is really pink
And on his insides, doesn't mean you shouldn't pull his card out
So what if a man blinks in Morse code while he sings if he sings his heart out?
Everybody's gotta get paid
I'd say "far out, no way"
Frankly, I'd be amazed
But a patriot would save the day
Make the hitch, help C.I.A
What's bad, what's good
A complicated man is misunderstood, even to himself
Acutely unaware what's in a shallow breath of air
And long exhale of something else
[Hook]
[Verse 3]
Two sips, instant drip, Sanka mud
New corpus publicist, thanks ya bud
As hundred bucks worth of wordy blogger thugs
Come forth forthwith to four seasons aflood
To morbidly orbit your toilet like hornets abuzz
Forming above like buzzards in love
When you first wake up, spitting sick from the gut
And shitting black blood at six
Then you wonder why I'm high up, sitting, yup
The blundering braggart
From a covered wagon spitting under the vagrants in gutters
What, does it make me evil?
Am I a feeble deranged fuck?
Cause Jesus would and I would not drive the needle exchange truck?
Well if I'm out of luck, I'm still pitching notes through this throat
Pissing fears and hopes through the ears of folks listening
No matter what, batter up enough of this nonsense
You can gather up the contents of the catcher's cup and suck
[Verse 4]
You kneel and squint your eyes and cup your hands against the window
Just to see who rides, to get a glimpse inside the limo
Have some self-respect and exercise some tact
While I supply the info that you lack
One must pay the frat fee to enjoy the fat-free snacks
Strippers, roofies, and six-packs, and groupies with big breasts
Sending out mass texts asking who's next
To get his lance waxed in the wickedest sex acts
Step back from the stretch, mack, and mind the gap
With all due respect sir, there's a limited cap
You'll need a ticket to kick it in the back
Of this rented, tinted-out black Cadillac
But I can tell by your polo slacks, Sebagos, and blank stare
You're good for the total package and game to be back there
But who am I to judge a man's heart by his yacht wear?
And it scares me to death, yes, that I'm starting to not care
[Hook]
[Verse 5]
Good and evil's often neither strength or flaw
But sod in the seed of what you are
A filthy silt stashed in a white silk sash
Or a doula dove smashed in an airplane crash
[Outro]
I'll never shirk this first world curse
A steady hurt and a sturdy purse
A steady hurt and a sturdy purse
Yoni and Josiah are my favorite people ever. I can't stop listening!
the new iphone advert is really cool.
what fascinates me the most about this song is the name of the band.
this is so good
Always a pleasure! I'm glad you like it :D
this is now my favourite thing
Somehow this song sounds different when you watch the music video
LOVIN Liz's dancing and the straight faced chorus hip jive. also josiah's kit is pretty fresh
Thank you big time for showing this to me
Thank you!
Word. Totally agree.
love the videos where people dance in sync, coreography rules expecially when is done by non-professional dancers and movements are not the usual ones. The song is great as well. So, here's my video fo 2012 summer
This was amazing live in chicago!
of course i have, but the name still fascinates me
this is an AMAZING rap. yoni's flow is insane.
and really this fits that sarcastic thing they have, you know? I'm with you brother.
esta gente es increíble...
I like it!
I guess it is a good thing that they did not consult you first.
Hey, thanks
Wheres Doug? - Is that him in the banana suit?
The girl in black and red rocks
They're not hipster trash have you listened to the rest of the EP?
so fucking goooood.. Still have a special place in my heart for the eskimo snow album, though.
If you wear first hand clothes
and get your hair cut by someone you don't know
then I don't know you
The realist lyrics ever.
king of the hipsters
I'm just poor 🤷
GIrl with green hair and pink shirt is so goddamn adorable.
0:11 is my favourite moment in any song ever
It's pretty a pretty hip video, and they're a pretty hip band.
But that doesn't make it bad.
i believe that would be liz hodson
um... since when are they hipster trash? What happened to you Yoni...
00:28 wap dance in 2012
this is so much better than Eskimo Snow
i like to forget eskimo snow happened
Okay good(:
They should of gotten the lady from the "Dumb Hummer" video..
yea or the one before that. eskimo snow is amazing too. this is enjoyable, but poppier
this video reminds me of a gap commercial
i love that shit
feck yeah
Kind of reminds me of the Dumb Hummer video.
pop rap just got interesting
JC Penney's never been so hip
catchy hipsterhop
please
Why isn't Doug in any of the videos?
Have you never listened to them?
yoni i love you but what the fuck
??
implying p4k isn't all over it? pitchfork[dot]com/artists/4593-why/
I agree. I guess I just like Yoni being grumpier than this haha :)
well the can't all be bangers
Who is the female singer in WHY? I checked the wiki but I couldn't find her.
His sister I think
Rapping like a mf'er. Go Yoni!
k.
Da stellt sich mir nur eine Frage:
"Why?!"
OMG
1:52
white rap is like this. and it's a nice break from twerk twerk money money shoot shoot bang bang
k. dizl yoni isn't even really white and clearly you are not listening to the right rappers try Deltron 3030 or Clippng.
Oh my god it's not hipster. It's just called good music. Why is it different to like good music nowadays?
its the lyrics, its like reading from the hipster bible
@@devin5068 the lyrics are about rising up economically and the tensions that causes. it’s just not hipster
Who's the lady?
this is yonie and josiah..... it's not even the band. love it, but find it very one layered for where it comes from
looks like it's disabled on this vid for some reason. strange. maybe this channel doesnt like exposition of opinion consensus. oh well. i think my remark would be drowned out by the majority of his audience who only probably know the last two albums or so. i wonder if they'd even like clouddead and whatnot.
i wouldn't agree that word is hateful in the slightest.
The original charm is gone? Its a fucking music video..not their music.
Hipsters gonna hip
it won't let me up-thumb this?
All these people are evil
He lives on the other side of the country.

My wife's boyfriend likes it though.
Bro this is probably why? At his worst. Check out his shit with DOSEone and odd nosdam, cLOUDDEAD
Btw, get off of 4chan trans rights
...Really? He's been rapping about his clothes and riding fixed gears for years. But really, who cares?

That word is hateful. Do you always suck at life?
I might be mishearing this, and it's got a great beat don't get me wrong, but it sounds like yuppie apologism.
Funny Yoni thinks he was born blessed. Last I checked the bible said his tribe was born of the synagogue of satan. Poor Yoni indeed.

dude isnt hungry or sex starved enough to make good music anymore, or something. bummer.
gayest. video. ever.
