  • This Irish Traditional was one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar. And this song has been a favorite for longer than even that. I will let the song speak for itself though, Lyrics Below:
    Lyrics:
Near to Banbridge town, in the County Down, one morning in July
From a bóithrín (path) green came a sweet cailín (girl) and she smiled as she passed me by
She looked so neat from her two white feet to the sheen of her auburn hair
Sure the coaxing elf, I’m ashamed of my self, for to see I was stare’in there
    [Chorus]
From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and from Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the sweet cailín (girl) that I met in County Down
As she onward sped, sure I scratched my head, And I looked with a feelin' are,
And I say's, say's I, to a passer by, "Who's the maid with the auburn hair?"
He smyiled at me and he say's, say's he, "That's the gem of the Ireland's crown,
Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the star of the County Down".
    [Chorus]
She had emerald* eyes with a look so shy, and a smile like a rose in June,
And she sang so sweet what a lovely treat, as she lilted an Irish tune.
At the patterns dance I’d be in a trance as she tripped through a jig or reel
When her eyes she'd roll, she’d a lift my soul as my heart she’d a likely steal.
    [Chorus]
Well, I've travelled a bit, but I never been hit, Since my roving career began
Got me fair and square, I surrendered there, To the charm of Rosie McCann.
With a heart to let and no tenant yet Did I meet with a shawl or gown.
But in she went and I asked no rent From the star of the County Down.
    [Chorus]
At the harvest fair she'll be surely there So I'll dress in my Sunday clothes,
With my shoes shine bright, and my hat cocked right, For the smile of an auburn rose.
No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke, Till my plough turns rust coloured brown.
Till a smyling bride, by my own fireside Sits the star of the County Down.

Oh, And I'll preempt any comments on this: yes I accidentally appended 's's to "Bantry", and "Derrey". It was entirely subconscious and I only realized it during the final checkup before scheduling the Premiere. Also my pronunciation of "Bothorín", and "Cailín" _may_ be off. So if you *know* Irish please point if anything sounds off!
    Thank you again!

I love the mention of Bantry Bay. I live in a suburb in Sydney, Killarney Heights, where every street is named after an Irish county, and the beautiful waterways are named Bantry Bay, so me heart skipped a beat at the mention. After all, I've been living in Ireland all along haven't I? Why just today I went to the shops in Tramore Place, drove home along Coleraine, Rathowen, and Starkey Streets, and arrived at my beloved Kilkenny Avenue. Aren't I in Ireland?! 🤔
( In my heart I am anyway! )
    A beautiful song! 🎶🎵🎶🎵
