  • Join The Royal Ballet as they rehearse Carlos Acosta's 'Don Quixote'
    Find out more at www.roh.org.uk
Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa's much-loved 19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus's score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding 'vision scene' and the famously bravura and breath-taking Act III pas de deux.
Carlos Acosta's production was created for The Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company to the stage. Acosta created new choreography for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of Tim Hatley's vibrant designs.

She's working really hard through the Russian fouettes (I thought you brushed the foot crossing and then lifting into the attitude, not sure if that's fatigue or style) but it makes it doubly amazing when she finishes with that turn. What strength!

Claire’s overall character and physical articulation - I hope she never undermines her sheer unique artistry and execution. She has been brave enough to attempt some of THE most virtuosic roles for these live-streams (which I adore) I just want her to know how appreciated she is (she’s a tremendous role model for me & I introduce her to younger dancers- as she’s idyllic in every sense.)
I understand it’s the nature of our being ballet dancers that we feel we must execute perfection every attempt, and I understand her frustration but I hope she (and ROH/RB) both realize and acknowledge the unique and importance of her overall talent. She’s a creature I’m constantly in awe of. God Bless you, Miss Calvert; as you are a force of unmatched talent, beautiful physique and unbelievably strong grace. Much love from South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 ❤️🇬🇧 your talent has reached my tiny corner of the world & in a prominent, memorable, significant way indeed. All my love, Claire! 💫❤️☺️✨

32:02 - I can't believe this gentleman is representing an institution as respected as the Royal Opera House with so much incorrect information....I don't know what sources he drew on, if any, but it seems like he made much of it up.
32:24 - I don't know where he got this nonsense that the march from Minkus's "Roxana" was being played during the 1917 revolution while the Tsar's troops massacred protesters, but its completely untrue. It's only military association is from the Russo-Turkish war of the late 1870s when the march was played during the siege of Pleven. I suppose this bit of trivia wasn't humorous enough so he made up something else.
36:42 - Drigo had nothing to do with the cupid solo, which was originally composed by Alexei Papkov for "Paquita". It was added to "Don Q" in 1902 by Alexander Gorsky for the cupid character.
36:47 - The notion that Drigo never left a score "unmolested" when he conducted is completely untrue, and he certainly never wrote any pieces for "Don Q"....the variation for Kitri in the dream scene is by him, but was originally composed for Petipa's "La Vestale" in 1888. It was added to "Don Q" in 1902 by Mathilde Kschessinska when she chose it for her performance as Kitri.
42:02 - the claim that there is no original score of "Don Quixote" is completely untrue. Minkus's original orchestral score exists in the Mariinsky Theatre's archives.

A huge disappointment in cinema . I'm sorry to say this . After the astonishing Carmen of Acosta, this is unexpected. So boring! And i appreciate the work of Miss Akane Takada, but her Kithry resembles a puppet theater. There is stiffness, there are no beautiful hands and feet of Ossipova or Marianella's irresistible emotion. Disappointment and boring - for the first time in the production of the Royal Theater.
