I dug my old jackhammer out yesterday. For the first time in about 18 years. I bought it back in the early 2000s when I was at the "all the gain, no tone" stage of my life. I didn't get a good sound at all and gave up on it quickly - yesterday, stuck to OD1 and was all "Holy hell, this pedal is actually amazing!". Quick youtube video search later and I find this video. 100% agree with all of this. Seen as an overdrive pedal, it's a cracking bit of underrated, inexpensive kit.
I'm a huge John fan too. I have been chasing his tone for a long time. Interestingly enough I ended up finding my own sound in the process and this pedal is a huge part of it. Cheers
I have to admit, I watch this video about 10 times a week because it always push me in the mood of getting a Marshall jackhammer because it’s just the perfect Marshall in the box pedal. The frusciante thing is my favorite of course and it’s my aim, but you can get a great AC/DC tone too, and of course a great modern Marshall metal tone. And you’re so great and interesting in your explains. I’m on my way to get one, just need to find the great deal. There are many people who are just out of context with their prices. So I’m patient and as soon as I find the great deal I promise you’ll be the first to know it! And I will dedicated it to you. Greetings from Belgium and have a great Monday !
I find it interesting that you say you don't like treble but you have the perfect top end for a guitar tone, great demo as always and I gotta say you've really opened my eyes to Marshall's brilliant pedals.
i bought one because of your frusciante vids and i have since found different uses for it, it's a killer plexi/jcm800 simulator depending on the gain level, figured i should thank you since it's so versatile, i love it now, people on RUclips haven't got a clue on how to set it but you sure do, rock on Dave!
Using Jackhammer as a brain of pedalboard is one of the best advices anyone ever given! Jackhammer is literally the cheapest pedal I owe (20£ on secondary market) and it works as a base of my sound much better than any other pedal I owe (about 12 overdrive pedals). It gives me a great thick tone, very slightly overdriven only when I strum hard and clean when fingerpicking or playing individual notes… and all my other pedals work amazingly with it! All boss pedals, ehx and ibanez tubescreamer sound brighter and with a bit more gain for solos or just for any kind of fun. Previously I used m133 micro amp to push all my overdrive pedals, but now I use m133 only if I need to make it louder. Jackhammer does all the other work. I can not express how much I appreciate this video and David’s channel. Thanks man! Keep going ✊
This one was epic!!! Not to mention Tool & A.I.C. stuff was awesome. Love the Peter Green as well. This is a great versatile pedal that I must add to my board for sure. Great demo and just some awesome playing on this one.
Dude! (That's California speak) Watching through a bunch of your videos. Just discovered you. Amazing player! And you are simply fantastic on camera. Cheers!
What a great video. I'm very new to guitars and their gizmos but I do own an SG and I do own a jackhammer so apart from the not being able to play (yet) I'm getting there. If I can get even an ounce of your capabilities then I'll be a happy chap. You have amazing skills, if I could only download your knowledge directly to my fingertips.
Very Cool, Thankyou for your comprehensive Demo/Review. I have just ordered one 'used' to 'accompany' my Marshall Guv'Nor2, as this series are impossible to find New (or used) here in Australia (and probably everywhere), I would love to get the whole series as I love the look and Build Quality of these Pedals. This Demo gave me so many ideas and so much Info. Awesome. All the best. Cheers
The tones your getting with the jackhammer are unreal. Your favorite setting with a strat sounds like John Frusciante, and with a Les Paul sounds like Paul Kossoff! Turn up the gain a bit and the strat sounds like Stevie Ray. I ordered this tonight, after seeing this video. I may have to get two and put em at differnt gain levels Great playing too.
Hey Dave, this was the first pedal I ever owned purchased in 2001 or 2002 and I still have it to this day, super underrated box...i always run bass on 0 and treble up some, but pretty much everything's on 0 except for treble and gain...i love it
Nailed another one, mate! Great review, I can't remember if I've heard better. Some nice tones you've got out of that one. Very underrated pedals in my opinion, JH and the Guv'nor (even without a few mods). Never tried it with bass and treble all the way off, though... gonna try that later. Anyway, great job, keep it up. Cheers!
My Jackhammer just arrived to go with my DS-2 as advised by Dave. It absolutely nails the Slane intro tone and that's even through a Les Paul! Cheers Dave 👍
JH-1 my first pedal 4 y. ago, underrated piece of awesomeness! (In addition with a BigMuff-clone I'm gainwise fully equiped😊) Dave, your play is allways a joy! Just great!
Is it a sign of addiction when it gets to the point I can quote your videos with you as you're speaking, like it's a movie from my childhood or something. I think this is the fourth time I'm watching this particular video... I'd love to get the chance to hangout and play guitar with you Mr. Dave. -It'd definitely make things a lot less weird for those around me who are pretty certain "Mr. Dave" is my imaginary guitar advice-dispensing friend.
30:08 you can not imagine how much it helped me in this part because I always wanted to reproduce the sound of the darkness but I never got it and I've always been thinking about what pedal I could use and I would never imagine that I could only do it with the jackhammer thank you very much
The Marshall Jackhammer is probably one of the most underrated Overdrive pedals in the world. I have so many high-end (expensive) OD pedals, like the GreerAmps Lightspeed, Timmy, OCD, Tumnus and many others, but no matter how I tweak the more expensive pedals I am not able to get a better (cleanish) tone with it than with my Jackhammer stacked with a Boss Blues Driver in front of it. Must be in front or else the tone sucks. Bluesdriver stacked with a Jackhammer and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is sheer magic. Even the Jackhammer alone gives amazing tone with my HRD. The Blues Driver is just the icing on the cake. It's insane you can get these pedals for about 35 dollar or euros second hand. Recently i purchased a second Jackhammer and I felt a bit guilty purchasing it from another player. More expensive is not necessarily better. Besides the Jackhammer is build like a tank. I also have a Guv'nor (GV-2) which is also an amazing pedal and use for the dirty, gritty, grunty, distorted tone, which I prefer above my Bogner La Grange. If you can't get an amazing JCM like tone with the Jackhammer and Guv'nor with your Hot Rod Deluxe then you are really doing something wrong with dialing it in.
Have you tried the Alexander Jubilee pedal? Or the sl drive, or Wampler Plexi? How do they compare to this pedal? You should do a Marshall in a box shootout pedal demo..
Hi Dave I have recently come across all your guides and videos and ive gone out and got a jackhammer, im struggling to find the right settings to get this going at to use with the ds2 and Ibanez wah. im running a voxac30c2x have you got some settings you can recommend for the hammer with the frequency and control ? I currently jump the channels which throws the jackhammer compression out the window
Hi Dave, thank for your video, unfortunately it's hard to buy jackhammer or golden plexi, I'm wordenring can other do the same thing?can Carl Marting Plexitone or any pedal do the same thing to get John's dirty clean tone?? thank you!
I just got it delivered today! I have a Peavey Bandit red stripe, and luckily my practice space has the same amp, but sometimes also a Roland cube from which I just can't get the sound I'm after (pretty much the John sound). That's why I wanted to get the Jackhammer to get my sound somewhat right regardless of the amp I'm playing through. I tried Dave's settings and was initially disappointed at the Jackhammer. It sounded very mushy to me and had a lack of clarity. After I fiddled with all the knobs for a bit and compared it to the pure amp sound without any pedals, however, I got it to behave just like I wanted! I haven't played much through it yet but it seems like it does exactly what I got it for. It also gets rid of any volume jump with the DS-2. I'm not sure yet if I like that, because before, when I played through the Bandit (on the lead channel of course) I had a very slight boost which I kind of liked. If anyone is interested these are the settings I used in my room. I've yet to try it in a louder space in a band setting. Jackhammer: - OD Channel - Volume: FULL - Gain: 08:00 (anything more and it sounds way too overdriven for John stuff.) - Bass: OFF (to me this indeed sounds like overkill at anything over 12 o'clock.) - Treble: 12:00 - Contour: 10:30 - Frequency: 11:00 (changing the contour and frequency settings from Dave's is what got rid of the initial mushiness I experienced.) Bandit: - Lead Channel (Vintage setting) - Pre: 2 (this is about the maximum setting at which the amp is truly clean. I put this around 3 without the Jackhammer.) - Low: 3 - Mid: 1 - High: OFF - Post: 1 - Presence: 10, Resonance: LOOSE, T.Dynamics: 100% This just goes to show that tone is in the hands :) To me my sound is pretty close to Dave's, even with these different settings. The added mid-high range EQ everywhere might also be due to me using probably the cheapest pickups ever, and I prefer a sound just a little brighter than Dave's for my own playing.
Oh wow that Red House tone was spot on. Anyone who does not think you have what it takes is just jealous Dave. You have all that it takes, you just need to be out on the road with some other talented band members to help round off your skills the way bands used to. Those who demand theory mistake knowledge with talent and talent wins every time. Keep cutting your own furrow and do not pay attention to anyone spouting negative rubbish.
Hi Dave, thanks for your amazing reviews and information. I had a ds-2 on a Marshall Origin 50 head and it didn't work for me. I bought the jackhammer after seeing many of your videos to try to get that Frusciante distortion that I love, but still with the jackhammer on the ds-2 does not behave and have a lot of noise and a big volume jump when max out. Any advice on the amp configuration? I use a Telecaster whit simple but active pick-ups. Could this active thing be the problem? Thanks again for your amazing content!
Hi Dave - does the Guv'nor work as well as the Jackhammer with regards to the compression/volume jumps of the ds2 and wah? Is it only limiting the volume of those pedals because the volume on the JH is maxed? If it's set at a lower volume, do you then get volume jumps? Many thanks
Sadly the guv'nor doesn't work for this no. Its limiting the ds2 and wh10 due to the gain from the pedal. Its compressing the signal and keeping the pedals in line. : )
First pedal ever bought. Loved it then, love it now. It’s much better than a lot of other pedals I’ve tried later. I kinda keep coming back to JH. I actually really love all the Marshall pedals because as you say, they’re super responsive. And they’re built for nuclear war, really. It feels like they’re even more robust than Boss pedals.
You have completly lost your mind at the end of the video that was i n s a n e !!!! After watch this i will definetly buy the jh1 thanks for the music man
Ah the Jackhammer - my first distortion pedal, and I got so much use out of it - so many gigs. I still have mine but I don't really use it these days - I find it excessively "marshallizes" the tone of most things. If that's what I want for any particular reason it's a good thing, but with some amps, it just colours the sound too much, to the point where it stifles the tone rather than really adding to it... ...but that tends to be the kind of amp where you'd be better off using something more simple like a boss blues driver.
Hi Dave I love ur videos so much. I'm wondering if I put the jackhammer and the micro amp together they close me to get the crunchy tone of JF. In my country the CE-1 clones like galuccio ones are impossible to get and I don't have much options actually...plz help me...ty si much Hug from Argentina!!
Awesome video Dave, incredible playing! I just bought the JH and have yet to try it out properly cranked up, you’ve given me some great setting suggestions! Question for you, I’m pretty new to this and just have a Marshall mg100dfx combo amp. I’ve been struggling to get a good tone out of it, it always seems to sound shrill and harsh, hopefully the pedal will help. What eq settings would you suggest for the amp, with it only having a little speaker, not a full cab? Thanks again!
Thank you very much and I would set it a few different ways. Depends what your after. ON the clean channel i would set it like Gain 10 Bass 2 Middle 3 Treble 1 On the the overdrive channel i would set it to od one and use the jackhammer to boost the gain Gain 10 Bass 5 Middle 0 treble 0 contour 0 volume 10 You will have tweak these for them to work for you though. : ) I hope this helps. : )
Hi Dave. I'd like to make a request, please. I'd love it if you could do a close-up video of that 70s strat of yours, as I'm a big fan of those (and proud owner of a 1975 natural finished, ash bodied strat since 1990). Thanks in advance... Cheers! Kjetil from Norway.
Hi Dave! Looking for a JF/Dave Simpson tone, I got a Jackhammer, a Ds2, an Ibanez wh10, and a Big Muff. Is it worth it to add a Guv'nor 2? I've watched your vids but still can't understand if I need one or not (and how it behaves with the others). Keep on rocking! Thanks!
Amazing! it's you that make it sound that good mate! I have a Vintage V6 strat and i always wondered about their les pauls, like yours is. Are they good guitars overall?
Hey Dave! The Marshall Jackhammer was maybe my first "distortion" pedal long time ago, but i was thinking on buy one again now in 2023. The thing is i'm more interested on a Jackhammer or a Guvnor 2 instead of more modern pedals, but having a more rich way of thinking on how to use those pedals. But maybe is a bad decision. Do you like the overdrive side of the Jackhammer against boutique pedals?
I bought the JH a couple of weeks ago and started to mingle and experiment with it, I've been trying to get a srv-like tone, but i cant seem to get that crisp and bright tone. I got my amp setup at clean channel and vol at around 12-1 o' clock. Amp's EQ is treble on 3 o'clock, mids on half, and bass on 11 o'clock. How should i setup my jackhammer or my amp accordingly? (My amp is an Orange Crush 20rt)
Hi Dave, I just wanna ask you a question.. I used to use the Mxr Micro Amp to get that Clean ish John Frusciante tone.. but that doesn't satisfy me at all.. So is it useful to replace my Micro Amp with the JackHammer? Or I can just put the micro amp in another place in the chain? Thank's a lot you're one of my favourite guitarist, really inspiring for me! Greetings from your number one italian fan ;)
I know what you mean. I tried the micro am for along time but it always fell short of what i wanted. Plus John only ever used it for a boost. It was never on all the time. I would highly recommend the Jackhammer or the golden plexi over the micro amp. MOre tonal control and just more options in general. Thank you so much for watching. : )
I have 2 in a row on my pedal board.. one on crunch and one on heavy! With a Fender amp like a Hot rod or a Deville it’s just beautifully heavy! Turn both on and let the feedback roll 😈
Hey Dave! I’m building a Frusciante style pedal board and was wondering, should I use a Jack hammer, or a golden plexi for Johns tone? Which one helps with the DS-2 and WH10 volume jumps most? Thanks!!
Hi, I have a very strange problem with JH-1, I recently bought one (used). When I play, for example open chords, (besides the chord) I hear very strange noise (kind of like amp hsss). I don't have that kind of problem with my other pedals. Have you ever heard about something like this like this? Sry for my bad English :c
If you have the gain up high this is normal as its overloading but if your running the gain low i would get it checked out as theres something wrong there. It shouldn't hiss on low gain. I hope you get it sorted. : )
Nice review.. Just got one of these recently, sweet little pedal. Did you know you can get the mode knob to sit between OD and distortion and tou get both at once? Haha, makes it sound amazing! Not sure how long it will last 🔥
hi Dave, apologies for this question not being about this video, I'm a new sub and love your channel, can I please ask you, is the orange cr120 truely an anolog rockerverb as they say?...
Hello dear dave, i love always yout videos.. are awesome... in this video.. explain the jackhammer, i wanna answer about your amp overdrive channel settings, are very cleab..without the jh1
Dave Simpson the solid state tone master!
Thank you kindly. : )
The contour controls the amount of mid range that you wish to scoop. If you turn it all the way down, it is bypassed.
The frequencies control actually selects the frequencies you want to scoop. If you turn it to the left, it will scoop the mid-bass frequencies. If you turn it to the left, it cuts the higher mids.
That's why the freq. Knob didn't work in the distortion mode

I'm a huge John fan too. I have been chasing his tone for a long time. Interestingly enough I ended up finding my own sound in the process and this pedal is a huge part of it. Cheers
Thanks to you Dave I am now a proud owner of the jackhammer( it arrived today)!
You are totally right, it’s a highly versatile and awesome pedal!
Your playing is absolutely beautiful!
Thank you very much. : )

Greetings from Belgium and have a great Monday !
I agree on the pricing. Hard to find one under $90 in the states. To me that's just obsurd.
@@Street-Shred82 just found one for 30$ because it had 1 mismatched knob
I find it interesting that you say you don't like treble but you have the perfect top end for a guitar tone, great demo as always and I gotta say you've really opened my eyes to Marshall's brilliant pedals.
Thank you very much indeed. : )
dave you said you just want to express yourself through your guitar and you do that with the best of them! Unreal intro
Thank you very much. : )
i bought one because of your frusciante vids and i have since found different uses for it, it's a killer plexi/jcm800 simulator depending on the gain level, figured i should thank you since it's so versatile, i love it now, people on RUclips haven't got a clue on how to set it but you sure do, rock on Dave!

So your JH is always on?
I've been using the same pedal for a very long time. I love this video. Sub'd for this amount of effort into understanding this fine pedal. U rock
Oh, Dave, I wish we could all go back to these days... 😢 This is excitable Dave! Keep going anyway, man!
This one was epic!!! Not to mention Tool & A.I.C. stuff was awesome. Love the Peter Green as well. This is a great versatile pedal that I must add to my board for sure. Great demo and just some awesome playing on this one.

Great video Dave! My dad had this pedal in his drawer for +10 years so he gave it to me, can't wait to test it out later 😁
Good god what joy this channel is.
Thank you very much. : )
Dude! (That's California speak) Watching through a bunch of your videos. Just discovered you. Amazing player! And you are simply fantastic on camera. Cheers!
dave makes me wanna get a strat, an mg 100 stack, a jackhammer and just crank out riffs all day in a garage
You've figured life out, m8
I'm my jackhammer in two days. This is such a great video I realy want that Frusciante tone thank you:)
sure I heard a bit of Rory in there. I may just order a jackhammer this afternoon. Thank you Dave. you're keeping us all inspired.
What a great video. I'm very new to guitars and their gizmos but I do own an SG and I do own a jackhammer so apart from the not being able to play (yet) I'm getting there. more than an hour of dave :) love it

Hey Dave, this was the first pedal I ever owned purchased in 2001 or 2002 and I still have it to this day, super underrated box...i always run bass on 0 and treble up some, but pretty much everything's on 0 except for treble and gain...i love it
Strat player as well, you can get that good plexi sound out of it.
Thanks, Dave...Great review, I am sure now to get this one for my daughter to explore her sound through this🤘🎸
Nailed another one, mate! Love your passion!!!!

This pedal is absolutely MAD.
My head nearly fell off when you played Red House!!

Thank you very much. : )
Dave seen a jackhammer for £29 should I buy it......stupid question will buy it
30:08 you can not imagine how much it helped me in this part
because I always wanted to reproduce the sound of the darkness but I never got it
and I've always been thinking about what pedal I could use
and I would never imagine that I could only do it with the jackhammer thank you very much
Thank you. : )
That was great fun Dave! : )
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Wow love this pedal
I loved the fact you used the "Kurt Cobain middle and ring" power chord shape when you riffed on Nirvana's "School."
:)

I used your frequency and contour settings and it sounds perfect! Dave’s settings lacked clarity, but I’m sure it just depends on your amp
Now that, was a pedal demo!

Try to play around with the level knob of both the ds2 and jackhammer.
That intro man, very nice
You are absolutetly NAILING SRV there Man!!!.... Damn
Hi Dave what would you recommend to get a dirty blues OD tone from the pedal for a strat?
Nice demo! This was my first pedal too, I used to love it until I bought a tube amp.
Thank you. : )
You have completly lost your mind at the end of the video that was i n s a n e !!!! After watch this i will definetly buy the jh1 thanks for the music man
Thank you very much indeed. : )
Great video!
You are an axcellent salesman.
SOLD SOLD SOLD!!! You’ve done it again. You could convince me to buy anything lol. Hey Dave any suggestions on caps for treble bleed in a strat?
Thank you very much indeed. I'm not 100% sure if i'm being honest. Sorry. :(
Awesome! 👍
You don't need the micro amp. The jackhammer will do it all.
ON the clean channel i would set it like
Gain 10
Bass 2
Middle 3
Treble 1
On the the overdrive channel i would set it to od one and use the jackhammer to boost the gain
Gain 10
Bass 5
Middle 0
treble 0
contour 0
volume 10
You will have tweak these for them to work for you though. : )
I hope this helps. : )
Dave Simpson thanks for the reply, much appreciated! Interesting the advice on setting gain at full on OD1, will try that tonight.
I shall get tot it soon. :)
Thanks!
You don't need the guvnor for John's tone. :)
Amazing! it's you that make it sound that good mate! I have a Vintage V6 strat and i always wondered about their les pauls, like yours is. Are they good guitars overall?
Thank you very much indeed. :)
They are good but i have heard and experienced issues with there quality control recently.
Try before you buy. :)
Do you like the overdrive side of the Jackhammer against boutique pedals?
great demo... so sorry, i cant understand your setting.. can u please tell me your jackhammer setting ?
thanks...
For a SRV tone I would recommend a tube-screamer-type pedal like the TS9 or the Maxon OD. The JH-1 is more of a Marshall in a box. :)
@@mickkraviz thanks for the tip!
@@thedavesimpson Thanks for tips Dave, really appreciate that, I've just bought the Jackhammer :)
Saw one at my local guitar store used for 50$, picked it up right away!
I have 2 in a row on my pedal board.. one on crunch and one on heavy! With a Fender amp like a Hot rod or a Deville it’s just beautifully heavy!
Turn both on and let the feedback roll 😈
Never mind I got it!! Thanks
Ooohhhh I wanted you the play Making Time so bad lol
Passa as configurações que vc usou aí amigo muito top essa sonzeira
Better than Alexanders silver jubilee for the JF tone?
Hey Dave! I’m building a Frusciante style pedal board and was wondering, should I use a Jack hammer, or a golden plexi for Johns tone? Which one helps with the DS-2 and WH10 volume jumps most? Thanks!!
Either. There both awesome for it. :)
That intro makes me fly, i could hear it again and again✨
What kind of modulation are you using for the ambient sound? Thank you.
You are the best!🔥
Hi, I have a very strange problem with JH-1, I recently bought one (used). When I play, for example open chords, (besides the chord) I hear very strange noise (kind of like amp hsss). I don't have that kind of problem with my other pedals. Have you ever heard about something like this like this? Sry for my bad English :c
If you have the gain up high this is normal as its overloading but if your running the gain low i would get it checked out as theres something wrong there. It shouldn't hiss on low gain. I hope you get it sorted. : )
I kinda want something to put before my fuzz to give my rhythm tone some extra balls when I need it. Would this be good for that?
It would indeed. : )
Hello Dave! Nice video!
How do you see it paired in front of a clean solid state Peavey stereo chorus 400 to have main crunch rock sound ? Thank you!
It’ll do the job. :)
Do you use the jack hammer more or the ed compressor more to get jf clean tones and to calm the wh10 and ds2
I do indeed yeps. I don't use the Comp at all. : )
The feels
Nice review.. Just got one of these recently, sweet little pedal. Did you know you can get the mode knob to sit between OD and distortion and tou get both at once? Haha, makes it sound amazing! Not sure how long it will last 🔥
Thank you for watching and I did not know that. I'll have to gig it a go. :)
Yes the in between setting sounds better than either mode! Good call!
hi Dave, apologies for this question not being about this video, I'm a new sub and love your channel, can I please ask you, is the orange cr120 truely an anolog rockerverb as they say?...
It is indeed. :)
You should get your hands on Marshall's reverb pedal
Hello dear dave, i love always yout videos.. are awesome... in this video.. explain the jackhammer, i wanna answer about your amp overdrive channel settings, are very cleab..without the jh1
Thank you very much indeed and I did indeed have the amp set very clean. : )
jackhammer vs ds-2? do you have a video on this?
Thanks, just got my hands on one for about £30 a bargain buy compared to other pedals!!!
hey Dave, have you tried this pedal with the peavey bandit? if so, did they get along well or not that much? thank you!
They do indeed get on very well together. Theres not many amps that this pedal doesn't get along with. : )
I was sold when he played Cigarettes & Alcohol.
What was the Marshall mg EQ set to? including the contour and what not
I had it set
Gain 1
Bass 4
Middle 7
Treble 0
Contour 0
Volume 10
What was the slow tune you played at the beginning of the video?
