The 2025 Ford Explorer Is Sharper And More Techy, But Is That Enough?

- For 2025 the Explorer gets a through refresh with updated bumpers, grilles, headlights, tail lights, and a big tech upgrade inside. But, it's still the same size as before while Toyota and GM have recently launched notably roomier SUV competitors. Also, Ford has ditched the Explorer's short lived hybrid system leaving just the 2.3L turbo and 3.0L turbo options under the hood.

Something about the grill with those headlights just doesn't mix well.
Subaru. The word you're looking for is Subaru.
Am I the only one who gets Honda Pilot Trailsport when seeing that grill?
The gremlin face on the dash, complete with volume knob for a toothy grin, I just can't unsee it!
Alex: here is a cross-shop. The Explorer and the CX90. Will eagerly await when you can show us a driving impression.
Drove past a CX90 in my Ford Edge and was surprised how small the CX90 was.
@@CoolTattslarger than the edge for sure
I'd definitely want a new hybrid option on the Explorer, one that focuses on fuel economy rather than performance. It should be competitive with the Highlander hybrid.
Great video as always Alex. I've been driving the Explorer since 1998. I lease them so I get a new one every 3 years. I agree, they need to create a hybrid that competes with Toyota, Hyundai, etc. My lease is up this month and my Platinum should be here soon. It was delayed due to Ford performing extensive testing to avoid or diminish recalls.
I ordered an Active trim back when the order book opened. My build date was last month. Just waiting on Ford to release and deliver :-)
what the! Thanks for being a Guinea pig for the rest of us.
Can you set up fans meet up. Every time you come to Detroit, I wonder it will be cool to meet you in person. Best automobile presenter on RUclips PERIOD🎉🎉 love from Detroit
All that money and no hood struts? Pffft. The new grille is getting a bit BMW-ish because it's now larger than it should be.
Horrible decision to put the HVAC controls as small as they are and on the screen.
These are likely pre-production units as the higher trims definitely have hood struts.
I'd love to see Ford put more hybrids in their lineup, but I also 100% get why they wanna focus on the F-150, and they're doing a phenomenal job with it.
My question is when you get into a Blazer EV do the ICE cars drive and feel oddly old? This happens to me when I swap from my Tesla to my Honda. The quick acceleration and smooth no transmission movement just makes the thing feel great.
yes, it’s hard to go back to gas cars
The current gen looks fine to me. They need to fix that crappy 10 speed transmission.
What is the issue?
They already fixed the transmission
Not everyone is a fan of the number of gears, but the current 10 speed software is just fine.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide It’s my coworkers Explorer. There’s a whining noise and the transmission slips. Been at the dealer for a couple weeks now waiting on parts.
@@AAutoBuyersGuidehey when can you just drive the new traverse
I find the Explorer to be a handsome car, well-equipped, with a nice interior and that it is reasonably priced.
The on-screen HVAC controls and the app icons at 5:57 look extremely small. I hope they enlarge both for the production version.
Love your videos, Alex. Excellent production and detailed. 7:40 mark Thank-you for the Head-Up Display. A million likes :)
I rented an ‘24 explorer earlier this year. It had the standard turbo 4. It was peppy and brakes were good. The tech wasn’t good. Interior was cheap and plasticky. I had to move items so we laid down the second row (buckets) which revealed a big gap between that row and cargo area. RWD does help but it feel so cheap inside. I’d get the ST with 400hp and some upgrades like better front buckets. Rent one before you buy. 👍
To me, a hybrid would be a no brainer. It's ridiculous that they didn't do it.
Did you mention towing capacity? Didn’t hear such. Overall, good first review. I’m not of fan of controls on the “screen”. Seems to be a safety issue for me.
5,000lb. Towing
Great video. I wish it had a hybrid too. Very interesting car though. Some day I want to experience that 400HP power
No turn signals in the side mirrors, is an abomination! Active trim $40K+!!!!
No temperature gauge?
I LOVE the updated version especially the upgraded interior. Have a CLASSIER appearance with Platinum Model 💯🤔
Ford was so close with European PHEV. Bit too early on tech. Also they put sports suspension only for that. If they made one with heat pump and 25kwh+ battery, I would be interested to upgrade my Rav4 phev for that.
Perhaps this is the last chance to get a decently priced, well engineered RWD/AWD SUV with good power and torque. Still, a naturally aspirated V6 would be a nice option. Turbocharged engines though powerful and economical are stressed and don't last as long as the more relaxed, naturally aspirated ones.
LOL. So typical of Ford for being unable to meet their own hybrid demands. Even the Escape hybrids were pretty difficult to find.
It seems like current challenge is "how big can we make the grill and still fit the headlights?" Pretty soon there will be no front end, just grill. It's terrible and pointless.
Grill reminds me of Honda trail sport grill
Alex, These Explorers are very popular with police forces in my area.😉
How’s the driver seat comfort and legroom? Best in class?
@@LetMeCook86 I had a 2020. The legroom and headroom was fantastic (I’m 6’0” and my stepson 6’5”) and we had plenty of room and I did 7-8 hour driving sessions in it, and was always comfortable, and I do have lower back issues.
I have found Ford seats to be the most comfortable
@@watchreport why did you get rid of your 2020?
@@gosman949 lease was up, well I should say it was during the crazy time with vehicles after Covid and I was worried about car prices when our lease would be up, and they offered to buy out lease plus a chunk of money and got a great deal on a ford edge. But thinking about getting another next year.
@@SasukeUchiha-zu6dwI agree, Ford seats are very comfortable in comparison to many other makers.
Can you get feedback from Ford to see if they have addressed the powertrain and recall issues on the 2020-2024 Explorers? What information can they provide to give potential buyers the confidence that those very well known and huge issues were fixed?
Drew Holcomb is a great music choice.
Ford: "we're not making cars anymore so we can focus on what we do best--trucks and SUV's"
Also Ford: *puts out a cheap looking meh Ford explorer inside and out every generation
Ford should worry less about tech and more about reliability.
They do, my Ford has been exceptional. It's not a brand issue but a specific model concern. The Ford Edge is listed by JD Power as a top 3 for reliability.
@@CoolTattsso true
Expedition Has childsest tilt, Ford, just give Explorer the same bench with 3 seats, and hybridlessness is a dealbreaker
They’re actually making a hybrid Expedition and Navigator. They’re going to be made because of a deal Ford made with the UAW some months ago iirc, look it up. I’m guessing it will come out some time after the next models are revealed.
The next Navigator has already been seen in spy shots.
I'm not opposed to the integrated Google ecosystem. As long as over the air updates are frequent and timely
Needs a hybrid.
Needs diesel engine !!! a four-wheel drive car like that must of course have a diesel engine.
My wife could definitely give birth in this vehicle 👍
2:35 an in line four cylinder is longer than a v-6 so your argument about the space needed for the largest (widthwise = true) engine is doubtful.
That depends on design, and either is significantly shorter than the I6 that the Mazda and Jeep were designed for.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide According to the Ford Component sale LLC the v-6 3.0 ecoboost block is 10mm shorter than the 2.3 ecoB . Nothing surprising: 1 cylinder less long and the bore of the 2.3 is 2mm more.
Is there a camera facing the driver? Any car that has a camera built in to watch me and send reports back to home base is automatically excluded from my purchase.
No, its not a camera, its a motion sensor the the ford blue cruise system.
Guess you don’t care about the camera looking/listening to you on your phone, laptop, tablet, smart home device, etc…. Don’t worry about your privacy trust me, there’s no such thing
😂😂😂😂😂😂🤦🏾♂️
That's what duct tape is for
Keep your pants on.
it would be nice to have climate control right under the screen as Physical controls (in case the screen is acting out for any reason), and also quick easy press without looking, and not needing to look at or focus on the screen...
.... also, I'm reading that Ford Digital Experience requires a monthly fee? Does that include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? Do we have to pay a monthly fee to have access to our Google Maps / Apple Maps from our phone, or the vehicle's Navigation System ?
Bring back the hybrid
I rather get a Honda Pilot. Naturally aspirated V6 as opposed to junky 2.3 liter turbo with only Direct Injection. Pass.
It needs diesel engine !!! a four-wheel drive car like that must of course have a diesel engine.
I think the Honda Pilot is also DI only and has a cylinder shut off mechanism which has a poor reliability history. In any case, I wouldn’t buy this explorer either.
It is not a bad car & dynamically it does benefit of being a RWD platform, but as a family hauler the Korean duo (Palisade & Telluride) is nicer while the Japanese duo (Grand Highlander & Pilot) are more reliable and comes better equipped.
First time you can say objectively all new cars are coming with downgraded interiors over the previous models and yet they always go up in price. Everything on one center screen looks like a clumsy mess all to save the 3 dollars I’ll never see. Why did we stop trying to improve cars
They wont do it but imagine ford cramming a coyote in it and give it the gt trim
They'd have to gear it super short because it would be 5000 lbs and NA.
You can get the Coyote in the Explorer, it a $3500 special order.
My 2021 Limited has a pretty jerky transmission. I hope they have improved that
Take a look at the Chinese/Asian market Explorer that has been out since last year and you'll wonder where the upgrade is for the American market.
Awesome to the max
Looks awesome
All I see is Police cruiser when I see the Explorer. I don’t know if that is what make them look cheap and generic, but the exterior is another NPC suv. The interior looks nice on this top of the line Platinum model, but I’d be curious of the material choices in lower trims.
It looks like it copied the previous gen Honda pilot headlights and the taillights remind me of the RAV4’s
So much to like, but no HEV/PHEV option? No, thank you.
Just ruined the already nice design...why ford why ?
But glad that this is a proper rear wheel based drive crossover and it was only pointed out and addressed by Alex back in 2019 when this generation launched
interior looks off, like things are stitched together as afterthought, soundbar split by screen; even leather stitching on chairs is looking off..
I rented a 2022 Ford Explorer and drove it across the country, 4000 miles total. The ride quality is terrible compared to other modern SUV’s. Very bouncy on the highway, hits the bump stops alot. It’s not a good highway cruiser. The Japanese and Korean brands do a much better job with suspension. The Germans are great too but pricey.
We should’ve gotten the version they sell in China.
Lookin great.
*** Bench Seat NOT AVAILABLE on the ST or Platinum version that includes the "21 Inch Wheels"... Sadly that makes it a NO-GO for our family ***
Will it be reliable? I’ve heard it called the Ford Exploder
Occasionally, I still call it the "Exploder," too, but the nickname references the fiasco the '90s Ford Explorers had with their Firestone tires failing (exploding) at highway speed, resulting in serious accidents. Nowadays, I get a Kacey Musgraves-style blank stare when I call it that, so I presume people are over it.
DISCLOSURE: My 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V8 lasted 13 years (with regular maintenance).
I don't like that big screen sticking up, nor the dashboard, I have a ford escape and has a big screen that does not stick up, I would not buy this at all and my escape has surround sound it's a 4 x4 , sel
Where is the diesel engine !!! a four-wheel drive car like that must of course have a diesel engine.
This gives the MDX type S a run for its money
Like the MDX it has a double wishbone front, and RWD dynamics and a RWD based AWD system
Looking at the parts list, I think the Explorer has a front McPherson strut setup.. (unless something changed since 2023)
@@ALMX5DP I thought the Explorer was double wishbone especially since it’s RWD. Doesn’t the aviator also have a double wishbone front?
@@naveenthemachinethe Aviator looks to have a double wishbone up front yes, but not the Explorer.
@@ALMX5DP but they’re on the exact same platform aren’t they? So i assume they’d have the exact same front suspension
I know the cx90 and grand Cherokee have double wishbone fronts
@@naveenthemachine I believe they are, but of course platform is just a simplistic word or term, and the different vehicles built upon them can vary in some pretty significant ways despite the commonality their general chassis and safety structure may have. Probably shouldn’t assume things without first verifying if you are going to present them as basis for an opinion or position. Ford’s website under specs also confirms the Explorers front suspension design.
I thought that was Honda pilot
Oh, that grill.... What is that shape? Some kind of a pot? Why can't Ford design a good looking grill? The new interior/dash looks much better though.
for fleets and people who just keep buying the same brand
RWD was the wrong move for a vehicle in this segment. Most parents absolutely do not care which wheels are being driven. Space and gas mileage are at the top of most families' priority list in this class of vehicle.
Naturally aspirated hybrid or bust.
thanks for not doing another stupid EV review, cars that no one cars about
I haven't owned an explorer since fuel return exploded, rear diff exploded, tires separated, the tie rod came off on the highway, the hood flew open on highway, and Ford said don't use cruise control may start a fire. It was brand new at time sold 2 years later.
It's 4WD and not AWD. Different systems.
Not a fan of it. I miss my 2004 explorer V8.
I miss the old BOF Explorer w the v8
Ford does one of the ugliest steering wheels. Where is the paddle shifter BTW 😏
I've never really understood paddle shifters on an SUV.
You get them on the ST
@@sociopathmercenary While it's true that darn few are tracking SUVs or even driving them "sportily," since they went to the dial-o-shifter, it's more important than ever as there's no other way to "manually" control gears.... which you do have occasion to... The computer doesn't always know the optimum setting for every situation. Instead, it's largely designed to go to the higher gear quickly--
for mpg..... fine..... but still not the best configuration for every situation. The best alternative, of course, is to give us back a regular console shifter with +/ - function right there.
FFS - Can companies STOP STOP STOP with "piano black" - I'm ok with plastics - but Jesus go back to 80's garbage plastic at least the scratches weren't that obvious
why not Apple car play / Safari? Android / Google - 🙅🏻♀️
This thing is just... dull. Lack of a fuel efficient option isn't helping either. It's boring on the inside (ohh look, yet more screens, I'm excited....), boring box on the outside, no V8 option, it's just so... dull.
Good video. Boring car.
Wow that new front end is ugly. Looks like a Chinese knockoff of the current model lmfao
The irony is that this is what the Chinese model looked like last year. With a panoramic screen on the dash.
I like Fords but consider me whelmed - the Explorer has always been RWD/4WD so that's not particularly noteworthy. The loss of the hybrid system means it's not even getting cursory consideration as I look for a new car.
Not underwhelmed, not overwhelmed... Just whelmed
The prior generation was built on the same front wheel drive platform as the Taurus and the Flex.
I don’t like a support hood rod, it looks like to an old style
looks like a 2011 Ford Explorer...
This looks like shit in and out
How many miles can it go before it starts to creak and rattle?
EXPLORER IS MEH...LAZY WORK FORD
Still not reliable
Most outdated design. 😂
Turbo? No thank you.
Make it a 4.0 and give the full extra 100 horses, it's that simple.
Mother Nature keeps on letting us know she ain’t too happy about what we’re spewing into the Earth - and yet we don’t give a damn and continue to buy these.
