    Wow just amazing you really want to revive this camcorder no matter what! Literally no techs want to touch the Sony CCD-F/CCD-V series 8mm/Hi8 camcorders because they don’t want to spend time cleaning the boards and removing and installing new capacitors as well as disassembling and reassembling the units. Hats off to you and I’m really looking forward to part 2! :)

    Even if it is fixed it will most likely fail later due to cap leakage between the board layers. I have restored most of the Sony Video Walkmans inc the GV-8 and GV-9 which are terrible to restore. Lots of leaking caps but I do have 3 x fully working gv-8 and GV-9 units.

    This tutorial has come as a learning gift to me, only three days ago I purchased a Sony HandyCam Model CCD F555E for 7,99 pounds which was consumer camcorder released in 1991, basically, it's very close in design to the F500E, I appreciate your fruitful skill on how you explain step by step how to disassembly such a complex array of pcb circuits; I really look forward to watch part 2 restoration.

    This is fantastic. I have one of these which I bought when they were first released. I'm experiencing exactly the same issues as per your video. I need to get it fixed so I can transfer all my 8mm videos to a digital format. It looks like a big job but I'll give it a go. Hopefully Part 2 will be available soon.
    Any chance you could put up a list of all the required capacitors? That would be super helpful.

      That is great, glad the video will be helpful with repairing more of these classic camcorders. Regarding the capacitor list, I will attach a full list of them in Part 2 for everyone. I'm still currently recapping each board which is taking some time, especially with this heatwave.

    hello, thanks for the instructions and great video. Im trying to restore my own cam, same model. Mine is not as bad as your, but some capacitors need to be replaced as well. I am struggling to find the right capacitors online, could you recommend me a website to get all the components? Thanks again for the video

  • @CycloneCordVHS

    This video is actually super helpful. Seems like it'd be a headache to work on but whatever it takes to save these things from the recycle bin. I have a CCD-F77 needing all new caps this that and the third but I don't think I have all the refurbishment tools yet. That and I still need to dissect it which I haven't gotten around to doing. All you need is a screwdriver, alcohol, soldering gun and fresh caps, right? Is there anything I'm missing? Otherwise great video!!

      Hi, sorry missed your comment. Regarding your question. So for the restoration process you will need a screwdriver kit (I use the iFixit Pro Tech Tool Kit) however, any screwdriver kit will work for this. All the gear I use I've attached below plus put in the comments section of both parts.
      Hope this helps.

    These things were little marvels of compact microelectronics back in the early 90s. I remember that despite the electronic part being obviously obsolete by today standards, the lenses on these cameras were really high quality, creating a very dynamic image that was no longer to be found in the later less expensive products. Beautiful low resolution images.

    That's cool that you uploaded the annoying process. I'm doing the same with a JVC GR80. But I'm too lazy to do every single capacitor since the vhs portion works flawlessly and the camera has a picture it's just all red. I want to get an esr meter but they're impossible to find in my location so i might need to get it online which i hate

    For the solder gun, what temperature setting is convenient?

    • @theretropal
      @theretropal  Год назад

      For a soldering gun, it really depends on the type of solder that is used on the board, however, if the board was made in the early 2000s and back then I would recommend between 340 degrees and 370 degrees. If the solder does not melt or you having difficulty removing the solder, then gradually increase the temperature but don't put the temp too high as it could damage the pads on the board.

    • @CycloneCordVHS
      @CycloneCordVHS Год назад

      @@theretropal thanks. The circuit boards I work on will be mostly ones from the 90s as I have a variety of cameras needing all new components. So will this recommended temperature also be 340-370 on those 90s boards? Or lower

    • @theretropal
      @theretropal  Год назад +1

      @@CycloneCordVHS Yes, just avoid using lead-free solder and use leaded solder and flux, which helps the solder to flow better.
