    We have pretty clean water round here in the midlands and i have still not cleaned my filters yet and i have had them in for 18 months with still perfectly clean water tested with the TDS meter. These Berkey's are worth every single penny, just turn the kitchen tap on to fill up and the stench of chlorine that comes out reminds me of the swimming bath's at school. Top man.

Looking at the silt left on the filters it makes you think about what you put into your body and the harm it can do. Thanks for the video Mike and Kath (and garden cat audience) :-)

    Hi, Mike. On an unrelated subject, I received my new MSI B450 Tomahawk Max 2 motherboard today, and the build went flawlessly. I also had no problem getting Microsoft to activate Windows. All I needed to do was click the I changed hardware button and my Windows key was instantly accepted without me having to type in my key. That proves the importance of associating your Windows key to your Microsoft account instead of your computer. Cheers!

    It's a fact that ceramic filters are like letting water drop through about 80 feet of sand. Also, they don't expire, mainly because he who sells the panic also sells the cure. In other words, Berkey is selling the replacement filters. Simple fix take your filtered water to the county in an approved vile and let them test it. You will find that your water is drinkable. Good enough is good enough!

    How often do you have to clean them please? I'm guessing it depends where you live - we have very hard water here in Essex. I've seen some people clean with the green side of a brand new washing up sponge. Apparently it removes a tiny layer of ceramic to expose a porous surface to the water My worry is whether the bottom chamber gets slimy and I'm wondering how often that will need cleaning if it constantly has water sitting in it. I always run my Brita hug thru the dishwasher once a week. I don't know why I bother- brutal clearly doesn't do anything as my jetties furs up in no time!
    I'm waiting for mine to arrive- can't wait! I got a sweet deal where I could buy a set of spare ultra sterasyl for only £20 on top of the 15% discount,so it should be set for quite a while.
    Looking at yours I wish now I had upgraded to the metal tap.

    I just got my new Big Berkey today and am running my first full container through the ceramic filters. It came with those instead of the black ones, which is fine for now. It is taking literally hours however for the 8 liters to filter through. Literally just drips. Is that normal? It doesn't mention anything about "priming" the ceramic filters in the instructions. Do you know how long it will take? Is this normal?

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong with mine, it's new, I followed the instructions running the water through twice and also soaking the candles overnight, the total dissolved solids reading is almost as bad as the tap water, it tastes very bitter when left for a while, the water is filtering through the candles. Not heard back from the seller and thinking I wasted my money at this point.

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  Год назад +2

      that doesn't sound right, the taste should be neutral, sounds like bad filters maybe? Regarding the TDS, the reading won't change a lot because the good trace minerals etc are still in the water, it hasn't stripped those out just the larger particles an germs etc.

We just take care of them, probably once a year, and they keep doing their job like they were new. I would recommend every 6 months as a better maintenance plan. But i'm no expert and maybe there could be internal bugs or whatever, but as long as it tastes clean and doesn't give you any gastro issues i don't see why they can't be used until they start falling apart.

      Be very careful. After a while the carbon inside can become a Petri dish of bacteria, because it’s constantly moist and collecting germs. You can however “restore” these filters.
      I watched a video of a guy hacksaw off the bottom and empty out the activated carbon. For 12$ he replaced all the carbon inside and scrubbed the outside, then coated it in colloidal silver paste. All in for around 30$ he glued it back together and he had a “brand new” pair with fresh Carbon good for another six months to a year. You can likely “renew” them five or ten times and have one unit for five years as long as you occasionally replace the carbon inside.
