  • Cylinder #1 from the Briggs 2, has some deep scores in it. We are not sure of the source, but the block is scored, as well as the piston, and the second ring was seized locally around the scoring.

It kind of does, but it definitely filed off like aluminum!
Perhaps the person that suggested we spun it over too much when the cylinder was "dry" of oil was correct, I did turn it over slowly by hand alot checking timing etc. I won't make that mistake again. Oil the cylinder, MUST remember to oil the cylinders! :)

I actually was welding on all 4 blocks, putting a 1/4" bolt in to hold the mufflers at the 45 deg. angle, but I did have paper towel plugs in all of them!

Yes, it is a strange problem, luckily it doesn't happen very often!

I wondered about that! I oiled up both cylinders before I did the sucessful start up run :)
I will continue the practice in the future.

The ring enf wasn't there when I took the piston out.

reason it happened is that you never run the motor fast enough to lube it so all the top ends are bone dry. Every time you crank it, your damaging all the cylinders

I had something similar happen like that on a Briggs 8HP! I thought it was because I was welding on the exhaust up near the engine, but after I thought about it there would be no way anything for my welder could get in.

Yes, I actually have some of that, just haven't used it yet.

Yes, and all the new cars have huge alloy rims, and it costs an arm and a leg to get new rubber for them! Looks are nice, but what about practicality!

ring might have popped out of its groove on the open end part?

just like my 8hp looked like after it seized up when the starter turned it over....don't know either why this happened

Might have been some solder stuck in the pipe. Thanks

Are you serious, Russia is going back to typewriters!?
Nobody can intercept those from the other side of the world!
If I had my way, I would buy an Arizona 1968 Plymouth Valiant 4 door, perhaps put in a semi-modern fuel injected 4 banger, and say bye bye to the Smog Sniffing E test lads!!!! :)
Forget the new cars, heck half of them don't even look like cars, where is the trunk! You need a trunk, just have a look at a 68 Imperial, heck you could sleep 3 in the trunk of that!!!! :)

    Is that fixable??

I think so, generally these small engines don't run super hot, so I have heard of people repairing the cylinder with JB-Weld.

Wow, I have never seen a cylinder score like that... Ring failure and/or broken parts falling into the combustion chamber don't make damage like that. It almost looks like a bad casting that caused the block failure.

Personally, I don't have the equipment to do that, however AC/DC Welding does!
I think I will just run this engine the way it is, since it seems to do OK. Sometimes you just can't kill a Briggs! :)
