Yup. Starbound 2 actually exists, but it's not what you think it is.
Corrections and omissions: I forgot to mention the fact that the music tracks were a separate download from the game itself. Also the fact that the download of 1.01 from Macintosh Garden is a disk image of one of those physical copies I mentioned in the video, complete with tons of little quicktime movies that play in-game. I had to download and install something called Shrinkwrap to mount the image.
Also, this game has a story revolving around the six races discovering FTL travel through a technology called the "leap drive". The phenomenon which helped these races discover FTL travel was "one giant flash, a brilliant purple haze sweeping across galaxy after galaxy". Sooooo... Yeah. In this universe, Jimi Hendrix invented FTL travel. I forget if any of this is mentioned in the game itself, but Psi Scape's website has all the details: web.archive.org/web/2000091911...

It's so surreal that these games look like an alternate universe versions of Star Control and Star Control 2, but they seem more like Star Control 1 mixed with Star Wars Empire at war in gameplay

What is a 4x game?

A subgenre within the strategy game genre. 4x stands for the four things you do in the game: explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. You explore your surroundings, expand your control of your territory, exploit what advantages you have be it trading, alliances or technology and exterminate your enemies to win tje game.
Sid Meier's Civilization is the gold standard for 4x games.
