Electronic Parking Brake = Another really unnecessary, stupid, and annoying electronic system that replaces a simple, reliable, and safe mechanical system. Most of today's cars truly suck!
Agreed. They build this shit in so they can charge us idiots money to keep repairing them. The wired handbrake was simple, safe and effective and easy to fix and maintain.. The saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" is as true today as it was when someone first said it.
How about trying this: with the motor off press the start button with your foot off the brake pedal this will put the vehicle in accessory mode. Now, put your foot on the brake and leave it on the brake then press and hold the ebrake button down for 10 seconds on the center dash the brake light will begin to flash as soon as does press the ebrake down fast and release that should release your rear parking brakes which you need to take the vehicle in right away for service. This is for automatics which will be in park, for manuals neutral.
Hello Bill, Thanks so much for this video Sir !!!! Have a 2012 Buick LaCrosse from the “rust belt” Ohio I purchased from auction. Left rear locked up and won’t move. Removed the servo motor, backed the pads up as you described and viola. Purchased a servo from Rock Auto, cleared the codes and all good. Appreciate the information Sir !!!!! BTW had an auto electric shop for 20 years and appreciate your expertise. Thanks
Every single significant and insignificant component must go thru the ecu& BCM via CAN/BUS network, to function on modern vehicles. It's just the way it is.. if this isn't complicated enough.. EVs are coming full swing the those autonomous ones, everything will be so electronically integrated and coded, no owner will be able to put freaking washer fluid in without triggering a fault
Just about every flooded car I have towed this past week is completely dead with this stupid parking brake stuck on… and then the tow hooks are mounted on the sides so when you drag it on to the bed the car starts to rotate sideways, then they put plastics around the lower control arms so that if you hook to those, they’ll break… it’s just GENIUS on top of GENIUS on top of GENIUS!! Definitely can’t do this process with my cell phones ringing every 30 seconds
Have a 2015 renaguade code come up saying it the actuator parking brake they replaced it and the light still came on ,found out a rodent got into the car somewhere and decided to make a home inside the car and ate the wires from the back seat to the front, little bastards
As a tow truck operator, let me assure you that electronic parking brake systems are the most asinine new idea ever. Besides the obvious what if it breaks down, or what if I lose power or my brakes fail and I need my emergency brake, the last thing we need when trying to tow your disabled car off the highway is to have to figure out a bypass on each and every model produced--we need to move fast. With this system we either have to dolly everything or drag it up a flatbed, or figure out the system.... not something anyone wants to do with traffic zooming by inches away. This might even be more idiotic than electric shifters or push-to-start buttons.... lots of troublesome components to break down.
Most owners manuals will include directions to release the electromechanical parking brake. For GM cable pull systems, it will include the location of the motor and tools required to release the parking brake (they do this for tow truck drivers). Also, many scan tools include bi-direction controls to release the parking brake.
Sadly my 2014 Cherokee is not one of these. Been disabled for 2 weeks now because there's no backup, I suspect the motor is cooked from trying to release the park brake and I really dont want to replace the caliper and rotor again...
Would have been more informative if you actually did the operations on camera, rather than just saying them with some pictures on the background. This video seems aimed at non-garage-mechanic people, and for them (me included) finding the components you mention can be very hard.
How many of you owned a 20 to 25 year old car with ABS? If you have then you would know they light up and fixing them properly is very expensive. They can also cause the car to fail road worthy. Now that is just 1 electronic component, how about adding more electronics to the mix like lane keeping assist, brake assist etc? These cars will be in the Junk Yard earlier than the cars of the 90's and 00's (12-15 years tops, half the time it took the previous generation to be scrapped).
Thnks for the video! I would like to add that anytime you use a jack/jack stands, one needs to set the parking brake so the car does not move. Since you are manually releasing the parking brake in this instance, blocking the tires would be most appropriate and wise.
Just a note on the electronic parking break on cars. I have a Buick enclave avenir 2020, and the electronic parking system got stuck after I jump started the car, with the message "Service Park Break" on the dashboard and I couldn't move the car even though it was turned on. It turned out that the boost to jump start the car was weak, so another more powerful boost helped get rid of the problem and I was able to get to the GM garage and replace the dead battery. Bottom line, if this happens to you in a GM car, then the dead battery is likely the culprit.
This was helpful short of knowing what tool to use that would match the splines on the EPB motor shaft... are there specialty tools that have the same splines or do you just wing i with a torx?
So, I already destroyed one of my rear calipers with the electric parking brake on my 2013 VW Tiguan. I figured out how to do it properly, and was able to replace pads on the other side. I now have a parking brake fault with the one caliper still disassembled. I ordered a new caliper. Do I need to reset the fault before I reassemble the new caliper? Or can I reassemble, and then take the car somewhere to have the fault reset (prior to attempting to operate the electric parking brake)?
We did not realize we needed to put my Lexus ES350 2021 in maintenance mode before replacing the rear brakes on my car. We unplugged the electronic power brake cable following some tips we found online. Put everything back together, bled the brakes and everything works great except we now get an error and no loner have cruise control. Do you have a fix for this? Appreciate you
I have a 2010 vw cc used, within a week, this system gave me issues. I blocked off the button on the dash and simply park by leaving it in first gear. I suggest you all do the same and save money
Hi bill I have a 2017 e class Mercedes and fitted new brake actuator’s and the car won’t clear the red parking warning on the dash with a diagnostic tool can u advise all parts from Mercedes as well
Question: would you recommend using the electronic parking brake until it fails, or don’t use it and let the load go to the parking pawl (the force will pass through to the transmission mounts)?
Can you please clarify for me: in the Peugeot e208 it has both an electric brake plus a parking brake: when coming to a halt at, say, traffic lights, does one have to apply both the electronic brake AND the parking brake each and every time...? (My current Renault Zoe only has an electronic brake, therefore it's much more simple whereas the Pug has a second brake, so I'm thoroughly confused.)
Bolt broke while trying to remove motor, this was bad advice. Now I need to remove the caliper drill out the broken bolt and tap a new hole. Those bolts are easily broken, since I was only using a 1/4 inch ratchet. Thank you for all your help.
a broken bolt is not his fault or yours but the shitty people that built the car, a bolt goes in and out in a certain direction,if you followed the direction of removal properly and it broke its a quality issue.
My 2004 Lexus doesn’t have this electric bs ! So glad I don’t have to jump through hoops to do a brake job! 240,000 miles on it, hoping to get 500,000 + miles!!
Absolutely, just make sure you bleed out the air while on putting it back in to prevent air getting caught in the brake fluid. (Most callipers will have a bleed bolt at the back of it)
My nissan altima 2019 i changed my pads. Manually released electric brake..now park brake stays on..and it sends code to starter not to start car...this sucks
So my ford fusion battery died, trust me it is pain in the you know what I cant neutralize the gear because there is no lock shift button and i cant release the parking brakes since its electronic I miss the simplicity
Whats happening if the emergency break light is flashing on the dash and the break system light is on. When i drive the car its making a beeping noise. Idk whats going on the car runs and stops fine.
James Hobbs Not that I know what I'm talking about but, I just watched "Electronic Parking Brake - Audi A6" video and it seems that he describes your problem at 14 minutes into the video. I'm here to learn about the next new hassle other people will ask me to fix, LOL!
Great question and thank you for watching the video. Since there are so many different types of electro-mechanical parking brake systems on the market and each one works slightly different please refer to the owner’s manual for the vehicle you are working on or refer to repair information with a good description of system operation specific to the vehicle you are working with.
I have a 2012 subaru legacy 2.5i and this morning i got the flashing brake light on my dash and my E brake is not working neither i can press the button nor pull, i am scared to go to the dealer becouse they’ll charge couple of grands and break something else in my car like the last time they gave me my car back with christmas lights on my dashboard. Please let me know if someone went thru this problem. Thank you
I have a couple questions. Who was holding the que cards while you were reading, and are you really a mechanic? I've seen a lot of how to videos from setting a ladder properly before climbing up, to caulking cracks in cement, and tons and tons of auto repair videos. Yours is useless. Electronic parking brake manual release videos require "Demonstration". You cannot tell me you're afraid of getting your hands dirty.
No thanks, I'll stick to Mechanical emergency braking systems thank you very much. Much more reliable and unhackable and easy to work on. Why would anyone want an electronic parking brake especially when everything is being converted to Electric. Why would you want to have an electric braking system that has an electric emergency brake? I would prefer to have a mechanical emergency braking system that is separate from the electronic braking system for safety purposes. That's why it's called an emergency brake not a parking brake.
Car manufacturers have lost the plot, stupidity in every part of the vehicle. No spare wheel, push button start , odd shaped steering wheel, keyless entry that thieves use scanner to emulate and a tablet in the middle of the dashboard. All these points are STUPID and why I am still driving a 22 year old car, made before the lunatics took over the asylum.
From the towing side this is a stupid and dumb thing. Just another thing that some enginer thougt of and they liked the idea they came up with, but like always they never think them all they way threw
Another corporate technical inferior solution which ensures that it will go wrong and require and can only be cured by an overinflated visit to a mechanic, who knows little to nothing to nothing about the system, after spurious trouble shooting and can only fix it by replacing the whole unit with new or rebuilt parts.
Whats the point of raising s vehicle and getting under it if you're not going to show us a damn thing and just plaster useless stock photos over garbage commentary?
You are explaining nothing,BLA BLA, with no point. If So,ordinary people can do it or not? You have to answer one-two sentences ,not complicated unnecessary prestige.
This is an Idiotic idea of cat company. Traditional hand brake has no problem it will last long. This idiot electronic park makes the.owner another headache. They should install manual hand brake and electronic park brake.
The guy who invented this electronic emergency brake system should be in prison how many times is this going to go bad
That's taking it too easy on that man
100% Agree!!
vehicles should have never had computers and sensors put in them, nothing but headaches and trouble
Probably a white guy
@TheWill0fStrength of course!!! And They invent all the good things to !!

The battery might be DEAD!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! Omg you’re a life saver fr
This did not work on my 2016 Cadillac Escalade and It is stuck in the middle of my driveway on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks anyway. Battery good
Did not work on 2020 GMC Terrain.
Hello Bill, Thanks so much for this video Sir !!!!

There was no reason at all to get rid of the cable operated(old school and time proven)parking brake. They're relying on electronics wayyyyyy too much.
Disposable cars keeps you buying a new model
Every single significant and insignificant component must go thru the ecu& BCM via CAN/BUS network, to function on modern vehicles. It's just the way it is.. if this isn't complicated enough.. bruh
Just another useless system that can break and cost you big bucks to get fixed. Happy Birthday dealers.
Exactly im pissed about it.

Man you ain't never lying had my shit towed yesterday for anti braking system locked up.
This isn't the only bad electronic idea for cars, but it is at the top of the list. And don't worry, they will think of something more stupid soon.
This is where the national motor vehicle department post to come in DOT not keeping the citizens and the people safe
Disguise absolutely right you shouldn’t have to do all this if somebody gets killed in the process big lawsuit specially when towing off the highway
I loved my push button started on my Nissan however my emergency brake on my tiguan sucks

Hmm interesting
It's all good till ppl lose or throw them out because they don't know what they are it goes the same for the tow hooks as well

I'm just getting too old - it's now come down to - do I need hand/air tools or a degree in computer programming to repair a vehicle !!

Remove the plug, + and - on a Accu with 2 small wires, reverse the polarity if it turns in the wrong direction, enjoy 😉
5 seconds on the actual work, and 3 minutes of himself!!!!
So what you’re telling me is my car may or may not explode if I try to change the rear brake pads...
YES EXACTLY LOL

Someone might make a fortune selling manual conversions for e-brakes.
I have a 2010 vw cc used, within a week, this system gave me issues. I blocked off the button on the dash and simply park by leaving it in first gear. I suggest you all do the same and save money
Is it easier and safer to just put the electronic parking brake in service mode before performing brake repairs?
Hi bill I have a 2017 e class Mercedes and fitted new brake actuator’s and the car won’t clear the red parking warning on the dash with a diagnostic tool can u advise all parts from Mercedes as well
That makes the system seem at least somewhat serviceable. Thanks for the video!
do you turn the brake screw cw or ccw to release it totally
I believe you can see the piston move when doing this. So if you are going cw & the piston is coming out more, go ccw . Hope this helps.
Question: would you recommend using the electronic parking brake until it fails, or don’t use it and let the load go to the parking pawl (the force will pass through to the transmission mounts)?
Try this in the real world and see what fun you'll have

I am currently having this issue with my Honda Accord touring 2018. But my car won’t start. The code in the dash says electronica brake problem
great video
Maybe I will fix up my old 2012 Subaru Forester and drive it more, old tech I can still work on it.
My 2004 Lexus doesn’t have this electric bs ! So glad I don’t have to jump through hoops to do a brake job! 240,000 miles on it, hoping to get 500,000 + miles!!
I have citroen c4 picasso 2015 it won't let me calibrated atall auto parking brake lights on Mehanic said I need to change the head unit
buddy tell me something if my gear panel and LCD panel is stolen then how can I move my car
This video is "Click bait", the title says releasing Elec. Park brake manually. It gives no instruction on that at all.
2018 f 150 break piston ?if it comes out can you put it back in?
Absolutely, just make sure you bleed out the air while on putting it back in to prevent air getting caught in the brake fluid. (Most callipers will have a bleed bolt at the back of it)
My nissan altima 2019 i changed my pads. Manually released electric brake..now park brake stays on..and it sends code to starter not to start car...this sucks
First things first. Is that some sort of goatee ?
You never said what kind of car you was working on
Ok so how to I get my car to a garage now that my emergency break is stuck ugh
Can I delete it entirely and run a hydraulic hand brake?
First time with my Acura TLX disconnecting the power didn't cuase any issues. The second time the error codes came up. Finicky lil. A$$cura!
These electric handbrakes are the stupidest idea ever.
So my ford fusion battery died, trust me it is pain in the you know what
I cant neutralize the gear because there is no lock shift button and i cant release the parking brakes since its electronic

Whats this car?!plz
Wow saved me with a AUDI 2008 A6 rear brakes.
