After you put on your lab coat I am pretty sure I heard that Honda say I feel better already because the doctor is in. The exam proceeded followed by surgery and placement of a new pacemaker then a transfusion of oil. Lastly trimming and polishing the nails for easy clean cutting. Great fix as usual. I look forward to all your video's. Thanks for sharing.
I had a customers HR214 in here last summer that had no spark whatsoever. Ordered a new coil from eBay and I ran into the same issue with the thinner coil frame and the original bolts a being too long. I put a couple of 3/8” nuts between the bottom of the coil and the engine to raise it up so the laminations were cantered with the magnets on the flywheel and it worked beautifully. I think maybe if the coil sits too low the magnet may not line up enough to produce spark. Also on that gas cap pull the rubber vent piece with the hole out and replace the crumbling foam filter. I’ve had a couple of those mowers stall during use due to a vacuum forming in the tank and starving it for fuel because the crumbly foam blocks the vent hole under the rubber piece in the cap. Great mowers but as you said really heavy!
Great job I had a couple 214s this year. They seem to have good motors but the clutch and cables freeze up when left outside. Thanks for being a good sport on Mick's channel. I really do appreciate your love for Tecumseh even though I am a diehard Briggs man.
I was given one of these early models that smokes horrible. I'm hanging on to it as a parts machine because it isn't worth putting a guide kit and rings in it (too much time and parts cost too much). Kind of a shame because it is decent looking and even has a nice catcher bag. I figure the owner (it was trash picked for me by a friend) never changed the oil. The oil in the case was more like tar than motor oil.

Dropped a Dewalt and a Skil drill from a platform this summer so been there done that too... camera work still works for me and good job on the Honda and yup don't throw nothin away!
Good day eh!!! Yes the coil fault is a hard one to tack down. I had a bad coil on a generator and a log splitter. Frustrating to say the least. The new coil was the answer though. Enjoyed the video Bruce!! Take care!!
I've had one of those in garage all summer waiting for work on blade clutch. It was running right. I thought it was coil but it was the boot. Apparently there's a resistor built in. I cut boot off and put regular metal tip and it ran fine.
Hi, I put a new $20 Amazon Chinese carb on my 1986 HR 214 that didn't start. I had taken the oem carb apart but couldn't get the inner needle valve off to clean it. Anyway, I got the mover to start but it ONLY runs on choke-as soon as you take it off choke it dies. Amazon sent me another carb kit (plug, filter & carb) but same issue, starts on choke then dies when you take it off. I'm stumped. New issue, the rope start is not retracting all the way now-it goes about 3/4 of the way back in.
I would try an OEM carb if you can Before that check the carb gaskets with some carb spray on them as it is running. If it changes RPM that is where the problem is , a bad carb gasket.
These old Hondas are really good machines, I love my HR214. So simple to operate and it works so well. Even when they're broke you can still fix them, just as Bruce shows. No sense in throwing one away.
Hey brother, I missed you. Had a friend call me a useful idiot concerning politics. Out in the shop rescuing three Wheel Horse tractors. Not really watching you at the moment, but just a friendly voice is good for my mood
Bruce, when you were checking that coil you didn't feel a tingle. If it would have been good you would have been ENERGIZED! LOL. Nice to have spare parts. Saved another honda. Roger

My luck has been that I usually throw something out the day before I actually need it! Now whenever I’m at the dump and I see power equipment I just grab it and if it’s not fixable take all the usable parts off of it and bring back the carcass. It’s that one screw or knob that makes a machine “done”! I can’t stand mismatched mower handle knobs and wing nuts and hardware store bolts where a factory carriage bolt, curved washer, and rosette knob should be, it just erks me! I like it to look “Factory Stock”!

Hey Bruce, my nephew got 2 free honduh harmony mowers. Got one running after cleaning the carb. Hand to use 3 hands to get all of the linkages and springs in place while bolting the carb back up. Then the trans went out and took 4 hours to swap from one to the other. If the germans built a lawnmower, it would be a honduh. Over-engine-nerd to the max with no thought about serviceability. Sometimes I do. They can be misleading . If a spark plug has a leak to ground they will still flicker.
