- Hi everyone!
Welcome to Episode 113 of the Golf Show.
This week Paul tests 6 types of winter golf mat.
It's this time of year when golf courses insist players use mats on fairways and closely mown areas to protect the course. Paul wants to see how much difference the type of mat actually makes.
He tests brands such as Spurk Golf, Masters and Nice Lie with a 7 iron, a 3 wood and around the green.
FILMED AT FULFORD GOLF CLUB

The SPURK mat instructions recommend placing the ball close to the front end of the matt, you're placing your ball in the centre, great mat I love mine.. Super solid..
I have the spurk mat, you're meant to stamp it firmly down into the fairway so the ends don't sit up. brilliant product.
Hi Stu. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I tried the one I had the week later when there was a frost and couldn’t get it into the ground. Another viewer has commented saying he broke an iron on one 😬. Over all I do think they are very good, but still have some reservations
Short game coming along nicely Paul 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Our fairways are like a ploughed field right now so the idea of using a mat is actually quite appealing. There were a couple in your test that looked pretty decent Paul. Thanks for the review as always. Really insightful.
Cheers for taking the time to comment Kev. I’m coming around to the idea of mats to get a decent lie and they really help the course over winter. I think it’s worth having a practice session or two off a mat for the fairway woods and wedges. Hope you’re keeping well mate 👍🏼
I use the spurk, nice mat but I did break a 5 iron on it. I hit the solid base like a fat and it snapped at the nozzle.
Oh no! That was my concern when using the 3 wood.
Geoff, get one of those astroturf swatches I have…cheap, as in free, perfect for us Tykes
The plastic, not easy on the eye, third choice is used by many golfer's at my club as you can use both sides depending on ability and shot undertaken. Most add a chord/cable tie and peg it in. Personally I use a shirt tent peg.
Hi Terry. Yep they need tj be attached. I’ve lost loads of them over the years, especially when carrying. I’ll give the peg a go. Thanks for that 👍🏼
Thanks for the review - very useful. I've just moved back to Yorkshire after over 30 years in Milton Keynes, where fairway mats are unheard of, so I've invested in one of the 'plastic bristle' types to play local courses and getting on OK with it but, as you say, I'm getting a lot more spin (and it makes a funny noise when I hit it) so I've now asked Santa to bring me one of the Spurk mats and we'll see how they compare :-)
Hi Martin. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Congratulations on moving back to Yorkshire 👍🏼👍🏼. My mate swears by his Spurk mat. That are very well made. Regards. Paul
Thanks for the test, my brother uses one similar to the plastic arch and finds it much easier than a conventional mat, will have to give it a go 👌
Cheers David. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’d definitely give one a try 👍🏼👍🏼
Your 3rd choice is what I use at Wallasey, and can be used 2 ways, flip it over so the flat base is facing up for woods or irons, then flip it over for tour shorter game,
Hi Phil. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I didn’t realise that at the time, but completely makes sense.
I was lucky to play Wallasey last year, what an amazing place 🙌🏼
You need to return this yr, lots of work gone on through the winter, new run offs on 5, 15, 16.
New structure and reshaping to fairway bunkers
@@philsharp802 I’d love to Phil. Sounds brilliant. Do you and a mate fancy coming over to Fulford in the summer and then me and Zach come over and play with you at your place?
Will speak to my mate, we have a lot of guests this yr, if we don’t manage to get to Fulford this yr then next yr, if you give us plenty of time I can sort out my shifts to suit
@@philsharp802no worries Phil. If you can follow us on Facebook (Golf Show) or Instagram (golf_show_official) you can DM me and we can sort whenever.
Happy to host you at Fulford this year even if we can’t do Wallasey this year 👍🏼
Great test. Hate using golf mats. I have the 1 you rated as the best. Sadly, I don't like it. 😞
Sooo… no links to products tested?
Great vid very useful
Spurk by a mile, your not using it properly,a class product
Hi Paul, do you know if any of these have a US distributor? If you do please list, thank you 👍
Check out eBay. If you can’t find them let me know and I’ll put you in contact with their main UK guy.
@@GolfShow thanks will check eBay out
can you tell me where to buy a nice lie golf mat
Hi Stephen they are available new on eBay
Look for a brand called perfect lie golf there mat is best on the market comes in 3 colours
Fairway mats…I hate the things.
I have a astroturf swatch that I got on a free-bee from eBay 😉
Debi uses the last one that you showed last.
I may have to do some research on the Nice Lie Mat…
I hear you buddy. I would prefer to play of grass too, but in winter a mat can help at times and they do protect the course.
@@GolfShow Your golf club (Fulford) has a better way of using them than we do. You, I thought, do a set area of the fairway where mats need to be used (at least last season), we, on the other hand, do ANYWHERE that's cut fairway height. I aim for the rough or kick off into the rough in most cases, only using a mat when absolutely necessary 😉
Just ordered the nice lie mat on your say so Paul 🤞🤞🤞
@@Veggie-ls4cr you won’t regret it pal
@@Veggie-ls4cr Mick are you on mats at Bradley? Fixby have stopped their use this year
Join Archerfield Links, best facilities, no winter tees or greens and playing from the fairway (no mats), ALL YEAR ROUND
Sounds amazing Jim. Are you a member there? Fancy a game?
Avoid mats at any opportunity. Learn to strike ball then divot. Mats promote early extension and scooping and injury.
The mat allows you to get out on the course..
Close. The purpose of a winter mat is to be able to play in winter.
You had one mat upside down😂
👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you
Nice lie mat unavailable, pretty disappointing
They are available new on eBay I just checked for you Phil
Rather stay at home than play off a mat
Decent video but to claim you're being impartial is questionable, the best choice just happened to be the one that was invented/ developed by someone at the club where you're filming??.. all your wording from the start is completely biased towards that one.. Fair enough but don't claim impartiality
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I didn’t need to say the mat was invented by someone at my club and could have remained silent on the point. But you are of course entitled to your view.
So why did you mention it ?
Followed on Instagram 👍
