  • Let's play Cold Waters in the year 2000 campaign, South China Sea. This is a Cold War-era submarine combat simulation game by Killerfish. We'll play through a modern conflict between the U.S. and China in the world's elite submarine, then and still true today: the Seawolf class.

    Cold Waters on Steam:
    store.steampowe...
    After tracking a Soviet landing force bound for Iceland it is time to plan your attack. Do you silently close in to torpedo the landing ships and escape during the resulting chaos? Or strike with long-range missiles but risk counterattack from the enemy escorts? Have you detected them all, could another submarine be out there listening for you? Has the hunter become the hunted? Will you survive the Cold Waters?
    Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
    You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

    Torpedoes running in circles and going after the submarine that launched them...I see that the Mark 14 is reborn again with all of its circular run problems still intact.

      There was a bug in the game for a while doing this. They had to adjust the break wire % a couple times iirc.

    The Song Wire guided its torpedo that hit you. You made so much noise for him, running from your own torpedo, that he was able to hide from you and get a good solution on you. Launching a MOSS would’ve helped you greatly confuse them and the torpedoes giving you problems.

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  4 дня назад +2

      Yeah, it would have been good to use a MOSS earlier. But in the moment, it did not come to me until the critical moment with our Mk48 when I could think of no other way to avoid death.

      Yep cavitation is a big noise event so you were putting the spotlight on yourself.

      @@TortugaPower another tip: don’t just launch your torpedoes directly behind you. Send them out in front a short distance, then turn them around where you want. Your odds of keeping the wire go up huge.

  • @Hawkathon
    @Hawkathon 4 дня назад +16

    If you fire and ADCAP and you lose the wire, you shouldn’t be going in its direction.

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  4 дня назад +3

      That can be true, situationally. But I don't think it's so simple as your general blanket statement. For instance: a submarine is noisier from the back than the front (e.g. it shields its own prop noise that way).

    • @stevepirie8130
      @stevepirie8130 4 дня назад

      No shame in running away after losing the wire though. Sprint away and return quiet in another direction.

      I revisited the video. In this case, if we had gone *towards* the northwest torpedo (for the Song, that ultimately targeted us), we would have been okay. Moving away from it is what allowed it to find us in its cone.

      I think this is the third time in this one series that I've seen you charge straight at an ADCAP after it has lost the wire. Don't think the admirals back home would approve.

    35:38 such steadfast traditions like, firing torpedoes at themselves.
    The navy didn’t comment because they fear the ridicule.
    Although this would be the a wonderful demonstration of the USS seawolf,
    Her crew and command, and her weapons.
    Destined to be talked on countless military youtube channels throughout the years!

    If the Mark 48 acquired the target at its maximum range and then had to travel up to the surface, then it would’ve spun on its way up. On the spin it loses the lock and when it comes back around the target has moved just beyond the detection range. The torpedo doesn’t know to keep searching in a straight line so it just spins.

      I don't think that's what happened in this case. Refer to 17:50, when the Kilo launches, it is headed towards us. Why does the Mk48 turn in circles here, when it has only closed the distance?

      @@TortugaPower that was still a great fight …well you mainly fought your own torpedoes, but that was the most intense fight of this „season“. The seawolf class makes it almost too easy, but this was a nice change of pace compared to the last turkey shoots (those were still fun to watch, but this one had me on the edge…)

    at 18:31 When you firing blind (you only know the general direction), always activate the torpedo when its already faced on that general direction. If the torpedo active automatically in your determined position but it didn't find any target, they will circling around to find a target (circling means it will turn the sensor back to you).
    You have two mistake here.
    1. You didn't manually activated your torpedo.
    2. Your torpedo determined position to automatically active is so close to your own submarine. (17:28)
    and you also made a few mistake in these battle
    1. MK48 is extremely sensitives, so when the Ming torpedo is already passed you at 8:12 you better be retreat from the torpedo kill zone either by slowly reverse or fast turn around (i prefer the former)
    2. At 11:41 the Song already pinging at you and know your position. There are no longer any incentive for your submarine to still goes passive. It will be better to just goes active, accurately find their position and get a better firing solution and quickly retreat from the killing zone ASAP. After that you could consider goes silent
    3. 23:55 it should've been your best time to use the MOSS. You could fire the MOSS at the Song and if you're lucky this may lead the both torpedo to lock into Song or at least you can make your escape

    If you activate your torp it speeds up and nobody can outrun it within a certain range.

    If I am not mistaken, the torpedoes go into a circle search after countermeasure homing if no sub is in range

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  4 дня назад

      That aligns with what I've seen. I can't remember there being a countermeasure in the direction of the Song in this video, otherwise that would have been my guess.
