  • Thinking of a move to the Ozarks? This story really pulls at my heart strings and I'm so thrilled to share it with you!
Discover one of the most famous residents, Rose O'Neill. A renowned artist, illustrator, poet, and writer, Rose O'Neill described the Ozarks as a place to "unbutton," calling it her favorite place on earth. Journey back in time with me to the 1920s and 1930s to uncover her fascinating story and that of the caretakers at Bonniebrook, the hardy Irish family, the McGraths. My grandmother, Callie McGrath, and grandfather, Earl Keithley, married in 1928 and became Rose's full-time caretakers. Callie's cooking was indispensable to Rose, while Earl served as her chauffeur and handyman while also going on hunting trips to provide food, helping the O'Neills survive the Great Depression.
Rose O'Neill is best known for creating the whimsical Kewpie dolls, which became a cultural sensation in the early 20th century. These cherubic characters were first featured in "Ladies' Home Journal" and "Good Housekeeping" before becoming popular dolls produced in Germany. Rose's success with the Kewpies made her the highest-paid female illustrator of her time, allowing her to acquire properties, including her beloved Bonniebrook.
Besides her artistic achievements, Rose was an ardent suffragist, and loving philanthropist. Her creative legacy includes children's books, novels, and poetry that explore complex themes such as the relationship between men and women.
Rose O'Neill's Bonniebrook was more than just a home; it was a lively hub of social and creative gatherings during the 1920s. Rose, known for her hospitality, often hosted grand parties and gatherings that attracted a diverse mix of artists, writers, and intellectuals. These gatherings were characterized by a blend of creativity, conversation, and the enjoyment of the natural beauty surrounding the estate.
Guests at Bonniebrook would often be treated to elaborate meals prepared by Rose's caretakers, Callie McGrath and Earl Keithley. The parties at Bonniebrook were renowned for their lively atmosphere and the exchange of ideas among some of the most creative minds of the time. These events were not only social highlights but also opportunities for collaboration and inspiration, contributing to the artistic and literary achievements of many attendees.
Bonniebrook's reputation as a gathering place extended beyond these private parties. The estate, with its scenic trails, gardens, and artistic ambiance, became a cherished location for community events and cultural celebrations. The Bonniebrook Historical Society continues this tradition today by hosting various events that draw visitors from near and far, fostering a sense of community and keeping Rose O'Neill's legacy alive.
Bonniebrook, her 14-room mansion, is open for tours. It includes a gallery displaying many of her artworks and a gift shop with Kewpies and other art pieces for purchase. The Bonniebrook Historical Society, a non-profit organization, maintains the estate. They appreciate donations and are always looking for more volunteers passionate about preserving local art and historical sites.
If you’re interested in history, art, or just want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Ozarks, consider a visit to Bonniebrook. You may find yourself enchanted by its charm and contemplating a move to this beautiful region after your visit!

I began collecting Kewpies many years ago. So this video was exciting to me! I have been to Branson several times but never stopped at BonnieBrookMy Mother and Dad had a Kewpie couple on the wedding cake. They were married in the early 30's. That is what started me collecting Kewpies.

Thank you so much! I was very close with my Grandma, and my Grandpa passed away before I was born, so this was a special video for me. Also, I want to help preserve this property. Right now, Bonniebrook Historical Society is trying to raise money for a new roof and other repairs.

Thank you for the history lesson with the bonus personal touch. My daughter lives in Branson and we have a condo for visits. Am learning more great things from your videos. Maybe in preparation for retirement? 😊 Have already taken your advice of the turkey wrap at Pointe Royal.
