For your browns, you want to underpaint with yellow, orange and red, as that will help lift/darken the colour over the top and is much more effective than using a zenithal of white. It works really well with either airbrushing, thin layers, or Contrast/Xpress type paints. It takes some practice, but is well worth the time in doing so.
The other option is to use an offwhite (ivory is great for this) and drybrush it over the piece. Not just the typical, hit the high spots, but you can create a pattern with the brush strokes that can then be brought through as texture when sing the thinner paints/well used washes.

Just before I fuck off right out the door, the bandaaages could really do with some sort of extra black lining between the wraps. Just a real thin oil or enamel wash to wick along it quickly. But only if you cared :p

Do you worry about seam lines for things like the neck? I'm looking at the turtles, and the neck seems to be one of the big seams that won't be hidden too easily.
