Excellent ! Madam Haider who I recall as a section editor of the prestigious Illustrated Weekly published from Bombay. S. Khushwant Singh was the editor -in-chief. Some people remain "above" of everything that happens around them but with keen observance. Qurrantulain Haider was one such person. Salute to all of you.
Thanks for sharing your memory. Tell us more about her. I would also like to know if one can access her articles and features written during that time.
Thanks for the post. Read the magnum opus first time during mid 1960s and now a month back, despite my age, +80 and eye age. The book is a landmark in literature. Sorry, but the three of you participating in the discussion leave the whole bit about its literary value out. Rightfully you suggest to have a series of discussion on the book but please get some participants with literary, history and sociocultural credentials. You don't need experts in taxonomies
She was historian and regularly used to write sunday column in national papers. She went to Pakistan but came back and lived in Hyderabad. Why she left Pakistan
She got disillusioned by what she saw in Pakistan post Partition. Wonder if she would have been disillusioned by Modi's current India. Extremism is the flavor of the month be it India or Pakistan.
The fact that Indians are as knowledgeable in Urdu as any Pakistani, where as you may not find even a single Pakistani knowledgeable about any Indian language such as Hindi or Sanskrit tells a lot about what a tragedy Pakistan has been. Not to mention Qurratulain Haider also got disillusioned with Pakistan and went back to India. She was given the Jnanpith award (india's highest literary honor) and Padma Bhushan by India.
My first reading of Aag Ka Darya was in my teens n I couldn't understand it....This is real master piece ,it could win it's writer Nobel prize if not translated by Aini Aapa as she was overly confident about her grip over English language....

Same here. She was bigger than many Nobel laureates. pity that her work has not reached the world at large in other languages.
As for as I know she couldn't get a good translator of her work at her time ..otherwise she is taller than many of her contemporary writers ...
