I worked as a commercial diver and later owned my on company. Worked (underwater welding) wet welding and cutting in the oil fields, dams rivers you name it. Did it for sixteen years, now my body is shot at the age of 43. The truth of the money is this,$42.50 per hour up to 40 foot $1 per foot for any thing deeper. In one day I made $6500. But on any other day around $500. The money is good but the danger is great!!! Loved every second of it.
i live in next to the LA harbor and there is a cost guard station there, and i was wondering if they teach underwater welding? so far i only got my LA city certification for manual process
I just started welding but when i'm using dual shield i find it so much easier to weld towards myself at a 45 degree angle so much easier when welding in flat positions
@pmay222 - It doesn't arc through the water because the voltage isn't high enough. Arc welding equipment supplies very high current (amperage), but at relatively low voltage.
once your at the skill level needed to underwater weld you pretty much know what is the best method. Sometimes when the rods are new you need to tap it to get the crud off the tip but once its exposed scratching it works well.
How does an underwater welder keep from being electrocuted by the welding equipment? I've read the whatever is being welded holds an electrical charge while being welded and never to weld in damp conditions with damp equipment.
@TheNecrologist i know a guy that trains people how to dive i thinking of giveing it a go but havent a clue about welding and were i would learn , i live in uk
Most places tend to dry dock more. And they make underwater capsules that attach to a portion of an underwater structure to create a dry enviromment. This offers optimal strength in the welds.
like any entry-level worker you have to listen to the old guys and work harder than them, you are young after all. and yes welders make really good money.
Nice.. No need to worry about the sparks flying anywhere. Or breathing smoke for that matter.. Maybe I should sink my car the next time it gets welded. xD
the suits are heavy enough that you sink. also you can controll how much oxygen and shiz is in your suit so you can stay floating at a certain distance.
@bladezgame If you ever arc weld the brightness could give severe sunburns to your skin. Mig welding is a mandatory to wear a welding jacket, mig gloves and possibly a cap to prevent sparks flying into your hair. With arc welding you need any skin exposed to be covered as well. Overalls work just fine for Arc and Tig. It just depends on the thickness of the overalls. Plus I suggest flame retardant stuff JUST in case. Safe than sorry amirite?
I am very interested in going to college for wet welding. I have gone to college for two years and have gotten my associates degree yada yada and am trying to find out as much about this as I can so I obviously dont know everything there is to know ha. But someone please correct me on this but once the welder asks for the electrode to become "hot" aren't you not suppose to touch the electrode because you will be shocked? I just noticed the welder in this video do just that.
I do this nearly every day, Welding under water is potentially safer than welding on land, because the current flows around the diver rather than through because the water much more conductive than the body especially in a rubber dry suit. The weld quality is never very good due to instant cooling. If a client wants quality welds then a under water habitat is needed.
No matter what you weld it does not become radioactive. You are never modifying the nuclei of the materials involved. Depending on the welding process varying amounts and frequencies of potentially harmful EM radiation, including x-rays are generated at the arc.
im goig to school for ndt. and welding wet. what do entry level guys make? plz help im lost trying to convince wife and family its a good move to make.
I have a buddy that travels all over the US and does under water stuff.. He makes big $ and had all the training but he talks about how dangerous it is..looks cool but I am a puss when it comes to deep dark water.. HUGE fear of water..
To get the arc started so that he can start welding with the rod. Newer technology inverter welders like my everlast arc welder have hot start that increase the number of amps right at the start of the arc to help the weld to start and to heat the rod for easier starts.
If you are talking about regular stick welders you are flat out wrong. However I don't know if an underwater arc welder is different, it could be. However!!!! I find it very hard to believe that they up the voltage when going in the water. it dosn't make sense. I think you are thinking of a standard breaker being rated at 120v and 20amps. lastly you would have to have the ground clamp on your foot and hold the stick in your other hand if it was even enough volts to go through your body.
I'm not an underwater welder. I just work in a Metal Shop, so I don't know for sure. All I'm trying to convey is that they most likely do not do 475 an hour, maybe 2000 for a project and the amount of time they work gets them 475 an hour. But there is not 475 an hour steady underwater welding jobs out there. It goes by project and by the end of the year, the added up sum of their income is somewhere between 15k and 100k a year.
oh ok dang i have heard stories of guys welding offshore and they watch their buddys arc and the arc just goes out and the guys gone but idk how true they are also ive heard that the pay is way up there because its so dangerous
This type of work makes the marrow in your bones become porous and brittle but as far as the life-span being 5 years I think that's because of the shit that always goes wrong on a real job underwater (i.e.welding in a swampy ass river and not accounting for the tree that fell into the water 10mi. upstream and that now is tumbling towards you a few feet below the surface.) ---But that is a pretty blue water tank to learn in! Have a nice day.
Nope, like I said, you can have fire anywhere, including space as long as it has it's own fuel. (that of course includes oxygen) So, solid fuel's or liquid fuels that consists of oxygen work fine.
This is why you can fire a bullet in space, because they have their own oxidizer mixed with the gun powder. but if i'm correct if you shot off a bullet in space, you would go in the opposite direction at the same speed (newtons III law)
If you shot a gun whilst floating in space you would go backwards, but the force is divided to a much greater degree as you have far more mass than the bullet so you would not travel very fast at all. I think you have miss understood newtons law. A human has far more mass than a bullet so the same energy would have far less effect (divide energy by mass) any science teacher will explain.

What dangers come with it? What's so different from actual diving and welder's diving? Can't they just swim back up if something messes up?
Niki Garrett is it good to weld the oil rig and pipeline underwater
Enjoyed this video, thumbs up from us and cheers from sunny IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
im going to school in puerto rico for underwater welding. went to school for welding n i grown a passion for it... class starts in feb cant wait.
That looks like DIT's training setup. We just got done with underwater welding/burning. Burning with Broco is even more fun!!
Sweet. I am welding in my Autobody 101 class (MIG), take's skill.
Can't imagine it underwater!
im thinking of doing this. im 22, love scuba and enjoy welding. any tips?
Thank you very much for all this information and your patience.
i live in next to the LA harbor and there is a cost guard station there, and i was wondering if they teach underwater welding? so far i only got my LA city certification for manual process

for underwater welding or just normal welding?
man this is so damn amazing!!!!!im a plumber im about to put a hold on plumbing and go do this!!!!!!!!post some more!!!!!!!
@pmay222 - It doesn't arc through the water because the voltage isn't high enough. Arc welding equipment supplies very high current (amperage), but at relatively low voltage.

neater than owl babies! ever seen an owl baby? theyre pretty neat!
Can you use this to fix the oil leak in the Gulf rig to stop the flow?
How does an underwater welder keep from being electrocuted by the welding equipment? I've read the whatever is being welded holds an electrical charge while being welded and never to weld in damp conditions with damp equipment.
How big is the shock? I am really curious about all this!
i want to course of underwater welding or maintenance..... please guide
@TheNecrologist i know a guy that trains people how to dive i thinking of giveing it a go but havent a clue about welding and were i would learn , i live in uk
Im a left-handed welder, can you tell me what sort of problems you having and i'll try to help.
Most places tend to dry dock more. And they make underwater capsules that attach to a portion of an underwater structure to create a dry enviromment. This offers optimal strength in the welds.
wow..yan ako hgosto ko underwater welding
@DoctorKnockers76 but how dosent the water extinguish the arc?
Do you have a auto darkening helmet?
like any entry-level worker you have to listen to the old guys and work harder than them, you are young after all. and yes welders make really good money.
Taterheadkiley. Marion indiana? Wiley metal on 15 or in town?
Average arc welder is around 20volts, and it takes around 50volts to overcome the resistance in your body. How would you get shocked?
what elecrod were using under water?
Is this dangerous because of sharks or bad equipment?
What makes the fatality rate so high?
Nice.. No need to worry about the sparks flying anywhere. Or breathing smoke for that matter.. Maybe I should sink my car the next time it gets welded. xD
What school you attending for underwater courses? I want to do this but it's kindof hard to find info on this.
That was a good weld bro
how does hitting your rod with something ignite your torch?... BTW is that what caused his torch to ignite?
Do all the nearby fish get flashed?
@lpbulldogs1 what college? ive been wanting to go to a class for underwater welding, but they closed down that section now.
Thats a very nice job, usseles now because the dry docs, also you need some goverment clearence after 911 to performs this kind of Weld.
How much does an underwater welder makes per year? roughly
is it smaw?
How do you know?
the suits are heavy enough that you sink. also you can controll how much oxygen and shiz is in your suit so you can stay floating at a certain distance.
underwater welding look fire (pun intended)

nice, always wanted to try that
that has to be hard w/the current and all but i love welding

Im a 4th year plumber apprentice. Good luck
i build boat docks and sometimes i have to weld underwater its same as welding above except its hard to stay still
After reading more and watching some more videos I realized that the gloves do stop electrical shock from happening. *backs away slowly*
how danger it this job ??
i just found my Carrier....
i wonder if they have a grd 12 co-op program for this? lol
I have a buddy that travels all over the US and does under water stuff.. He makes big $ and had all the training but he talks about how dangerous it is..looks cool but I am a puss when it comes to deep dark water.. HUGE fear of water..
Insulate well. Remember that your work is going to cool extremely fast.
Can someone PLEASE tell me what stinger/electrode holder that is? Please guys.
abit more then tht lol depending on wat country youre in i guess lol australia pays 35 an hr to those who hold atleast 2 welding tickets lol
how come the electric doesnt arc through the salt water and electrocute the welding person..?
how is tht possible wouldnt the flame just go out
underwater welding 0806 right on!
To get the arc started so that he can start welding with the rod. Newer technology inverter welders like my everlast arc welder have hot start that increase the number of amps right at the start of the arc to help the weld to start and to heat the rod for easier starts.
i'm in the boilermakers union apprenticeship and i know that underwater welding is comparible to crab fishing in regards to dangerousness.
nice clip. To bad tho that there was no welding screen in front of the camera, then you would see the welding better...
This at D.I.T?
My bf is a commercial diver/welder and sometimes he is under water for several hours...not only 45 min shifts.
what do yal think is better underwater welding or becoming a firefighter
so si this sort of the same concept as an arch welder?
@LucienLachance007 they wear rubber gloves to prevent electrical shock i had watched a vid before this one and learned alot about this

@mcskifter ...but watch our for thoriated tungsten when tigging ;)
Big bucks in that field boys. You youngins should go to school and do that for a profession. Good money there!!

damn thats looks sweet, duno if i could do that would be scared of sharks n shit
Least you dont have to worry about cooling your metal afterwards :P
oh ok dang i have heard stories of guys welding offshore and they watch their buddys arc and the arc just goes out and the guys gone but idk how true they are also ive heard that the pay is way up there because its so dangerous
Looks dangerous and pretty hard to do but dont forget the money
i wonder what electrode he used
insanely cool
Take that laws of physics!
I hope there's free underwater welding training for those who cant afford ;(
nice =) a dream jobb
Why do you have to do that???
I am going to the college of oceaneering for that.
I think it's a little late to weld the hole shut. The boat already sunk.
This type of work makes the marrow in your bones become porous and brittle but as far as the life-span being 5 years I think that's because of the shit that always goes wrong on a real job underwater (i.e.welding in a swampy ass river and not accounting for the tree that fell into the water 10mi. upstream and that now is tumbling towards you a few feet below the surface.) ---But that is a pretty blue water tank to learn in! i heard underwater welding can take six years off your life. but the money you get doing it kinda offsets the years.
Nope, like I said, you can have fire anywhere, including space as long as it has it's own fuel. (that of course includes oxygen) So, solid fuel's or liquid fuels that consists of oxygen work fine.
Ahhh i got welders flash!
this is arc welding? how underwater???
The average yearly salary for underwater welders can rage anywhere from $90,000 - $200,000 depending on area of work and how dangerous the job is.
Insane!
this is what i want to do im already certified for mig, stick and proficient in tig welding.need commercial diving certificate and a hook up with a job
is he welding underwater with an electrode welder?
I thought they have special gear for that.
This is why you can fire a bullet in space, because they have their own oxidizer mixed with the gun powder. but if i'm correct if you shot off a bullet in space, you would go in the opposite direction at the same speed (newtons III law)
well you have to watch out for sharks and sting rays
but it pays good
Crap even underwater you have to peck the bloody rod to get it started LOL
Can sombody tell me where the danger hides by underwater welding?
@Mastermind109 Welding? Plenty.
Underwater welding? I've only made attempts at it.
If you shot a gun whilst floating in space you would go backwards, but the force is divided to a much greater degree as you have far more mass than the bullet so you would not travel very fast at all.
