Yep, Plagueis actually knew about maul, and sanctioned mauls training as a sith assassin. Not a true sith. They used him on various missions to kill their rivals grab info ect.
I don't like the Snoke=Plaegius theory, it removes the threat of Sidious. I would have liked it more if Plaegius had Snoke as secret apprentice then Sidious would have killed Plaegius when he found out about Snoke and then attack Snoke but Snoke would have escaped with many injuries which explains his scars and would have went into hiding and it also explains why Snoke had returned when Sidious had died cause Sidious was more powerful than him.

Plot twist. He’d just learned immortality and finally felt safe enough to sleep for once. He Came back to life a few hours later and faded into obscurity so he could continue his research
I remember in the Darth Plagueis novel, when Palpatine was shocking him, Plagueis woke up and took it like a champ as a way to test his "foolish power of immortality" as Palpatine said, but him waking up like that made me wonder if somehow he suceeded and is merely hiding out there (and no i dont think Snoke is Plagueis)
It wouldn't be surprising a Sith Master wouldn't tell nor teach their apprentice everything, because when the apprentice finally challenge their master, the master would use some trick up their sleeves.
Except at the end of the novel, we get confirmation that Plagueis died, and the darkness that plagued the galaxy rested on a sole individual in Sidious that reshaped Sidious connection to the dark side and the force itself

Sith have grown weaker and weaker due to the fact they only share what they want with there pupils so when the master inevitable is killed by the pupil who is by then secretly a master with a pupil himself then the knowledge is lost, also the rule of two is a con I believe they all had multiple pupils who didn't have a clue about one another so maybe they share what they want with who they want!!!!????? Just my thoughts and observation of the sith over 25+ years lol.
Yeah, unfortunate for the Sith when Bane's rule of two failed. The rule of two intended to make the Sith grow stronger with each cycle, the masters should teach all the secrets to the apprentice and the apprentices were supposed take their master's place when they are capable of overwhelming their masters by either force/fight. But it failed as the Sith's lust for power grew stronger instead and eventually led to their downfall in a way, so many valuable knowledge and abilities are lost through the generations. That's a great unfortunate indeed!

Indeed, even Bane's apprentice beat him not through power but via Sith alchemy, a power Bane had not. Indeed, every master and apprentice afterwards found themselves in a similar situation, with the apprentice overthrowing their master via some skill the master didn't possess.

As well as the points explained in this video, it's also made clear in the Plagueis novel that Plagueis and Palpatine both had differing opinions on how eternal life could be achieved. Following in his master's footsteps Plagueis believed a combination of science and studying the dark side academically was the key to immortality, whilst Palpatine strongly believed in rituals and ancient teachings, purely of the force and completely arcane. I think for this reason, Palpatine dismissed his master's teachings so didn't care about that when killing him. Plagueis was actually probably correct out of the two as we know he did ressurect beings and his master was able to live eternally (although in a completely different form)
Immortality isn't invicibility. One is about not aging. One is about not dying. Once you're dead, You can't resurrect yourself. But resurrecting someone else while you are alive is easier. Just like how a doctor bleeding our with broken bones and torn ligament can't operate on himself.
I've said it before, I'll say it again (and this is not necessarily in line with modern or EU canon, just my theory) Plagueis obtained immortality through essence transfer, but it can only happen if he is killed by a powerful force user, and he can jump into his killer's body at the moment of death. I believe Plagueis tricked Palp into killing him, and took his body. Ultimately he wanted to transfer into Skywalker DNA, since Plagueis is responsible for the Skywalker lineage. As Palp, he groomed Anakin for the same reason, but ultimately decided not to jump into Anakin's destroyed, limbless agonizing body... Instead keeping him around to do his bidding. Years later he attempted to seduce Luke into killing him... Think about allllll the dialogue between Sidious and Luke in ROTJ... it's 95% "kill me, Luke". He was trying to get killed so that he could jump into LUKE! I don't believe that Sidious died after Vader threw him either. If a death happens off camera, it's not confirmed. I do believe he escaped, and what is missing between episode 6 and 7 is Sidious grooming, seducing and then essence transferring into Snoke. And to jump fwd a bit, What was the last thing Snoke accomplished? To be killed by.... A SkyWalker! Who he groomed for years and years, and meticulously orchestrated the events leading up to the scenario to make it happen. Plagueis=Sidious=Snoke=Kylo... He really was the wise! And he really has cheated death. Oh Mighty Lore Master, I'm nowhere near as knowledgable as you in this field but I've built upon this theory ever since ROTJ and noticing how much Sid wanted Luke to kill him. I'd love to have you weigh in on it.
I originally liked the Snoke = Plagueis theory but then came to really dislike it after I realized some of the others were better (my favorite was the Snoke = Vitiate theory), but man, this comment makes me really hope this is true. That'd be downright awesome haha
@@danablett I know the feeling, I feel kinda like the fact that we have a main canon and Legends canon allows fans to come up with their own alternate canons for themselves. For example, regardless of the outcome of Episode 9, I'll always imagine that an empire like the Fel Empire rises from the First Order, as the Fel Empire is one of my favorite parts of Legends.
I think George Lucas was going to give more of Plageuis to us in his sequels, the scripts of which he left them to produce, but they stupidly threw out and did TFA instead.
He would never have been able to actually “bring himself back from death” , he could just stop himself from dying. That’s what would have been anyway. He would have healed himself by messing with his own midichlorians just as he tried to do when Palpatine actually killed him. He just hadn’t had enough practice & experience yet to be advanced enough with it to actually overpower Palpatine’s attempts to kill him with his attempts to heal himself.
Thank you for this excellent video! This is something that always bothered me - why Palpatine gave so little value to the other work that his master was doing. Ruling forever will not work if you don't have that "forever" figured out.

This is a pretty definitive answer for a good question. At the most basic level, it just boils down to timing--Palpatine was forced to make the decision the night before he was expected by his Sith Master to appoint him Co-Chancellor. That appointment would have likely brought many problems to Palpatine's own vision of how to assume control of the galaxy, yet he had very little time to act. Ultimately, he sacrificed knowledge of Plagueis' quest for immortality in order to secure his grip on the Republic and, later, the Empire.
Really enjoyed this video. I just can’t get enough of Plagueis and Palpatine. James Luceno has set an unmatched standard of story telling, and in my mind, has become the premier Star Wars author to date.
It works because it works. Lightsabers aren't meant to be a technology that can be replicated in real life. They're partially a form of magic, one based on creating a bond between the user and a powerful object connected with the natural world, usually the kyber crystals, though some very clever force users managed to use things like glass shards or certain technology. This bond is then enhanced via the "frozen beam" technology from the far reaches, creating what we know as a lightsaber.
Would’ve it been cool if Plaugeis was the villain in the sequels? The Sith Lord who cheated death, and with palpatine gone, could rule the galaxy as he saw fit? I’d pay some serious coin to see that series.
The thing I love about your channel...you post both canon AND Legends content, but you specify at the beginning where your source material is coming from. I've had to unfollow quite a few channels because they don't bother to differentiate between the two and I cannot support that as it will only lead to confusion among casual "fans", who are now Lucasfilms target audience instead of the fans, and that confusion will only lead to Star Wars getting further dumbed down for the masses. Thank you for posting responsibly! Now if only more channels would do so...
In the original concept of the story, Plageuis wasn't so soft in wanting to share power with his student. He had created Anakin on purpose after somehow choosing Shmi Skywalker. Then planned to take Anakin as his more permanent apprentice. Aka he was going to kill Palpatine when he was no longer useful. Somehow, Palpatine figured it out. Got scared, and "decided he had learned all that he could from Plageuis" as the original Wookiepedia article had once said back in the day. This was a few years after Revenge of the Sith. Before the Darth Plageuis novel. When the concept for the character made him even more ruthless than Palpatine. Palps probably didn't like coming to know that he was just a means to an end. Like his relationship with Dooku, with Dooku being subservient and only a placeholder. Plageuis was using Palpatine as a placeholder for a much more powerful student. But he underestimated Palpatine in the end. I wish we had seen that Plageuis. It would have made him even darker than he already is in the novel. In fact when that article was written, it also said that a Darth Plageuis novel was supposed to have been written back then. But they felt a backstory for Palpatine would "ruin the mystique" surrounding him. In the end though they did write the novel. With the exception of the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Plageuis' novel was the best of the Expanded Universe. Bane would have been proud.

Every sith apprentice wants to kill their master. Its kinda their thing. The master knows it. The apprentice knows it. The apprentice also knows when he kills his master, becomes the master, then takes on an apprentice of his own, that apprentice will try to kill him at some point. Just part of sithdom.
He did, but a Sith Apprentice wanting to kill the Master is a constant thing. If the apprentice doesn't hate the master early on, the master isn't teaching the apprentice correctly.
I never understood why Plagueis chose to have an apprentice in the first place. If he truly sought immortality, then he'd better stay alone right? He doesn't need a successor, it's just an unnecessary threat.

Sidious wasn't waiting for a moment when Plagueis let his guard down, he was waiting for the right moment politically. He even told Plagueis when he was killing him that he could have let him die instead of saving him when he almost got assassinated, but that he still had secrets to learn so he saved him. He even makes it clear that he was manipulating Plagueis when he was still an apprentice. Sidious killed Plagueis in the manner that he did for effect and timing, not because he needed an "oppurtunity" when Plagueis is weak or something. It's all pretty clear in the book. Sidious could have gotten rid of Plagueis for a long time by then, but chose not to. Also, the "secret" of immortality was not lost with Plagueis. Sidious was present for the many resurrections of that rival Sith lord and while not gifted with manipulating the midichlorians like Plagueis, he was well aware of and took part in those machinations. Their combined efforts literally made anakin. I like Plagueis but man people need to stop making characters seem like more than they are. At any rate, the rest of the video was good, thanks for the content.
So, if they don’t know the secret of resurrection, how then does Maul get cut in half and survive? Or anakin survive for extended periods after having multiple appendages burned off and almost all of his skin? And for the matter, where is the “rule of two” when all of these earths are crossin paths all the time?
They shouldn't have brought back Palpatine in IX, they should have brought back Plagueis. Ageless, watching and waiting for the better part of a century, knowing Sidious's empire would eventually fail and leave an easy power vacuum to fill.
The disturbance in the force would had have to have come from Darth Plagueis since Darth Maul ends up surviving after the fight against Obi Wan on Naboo.. Could Plagueis be alive?
Such a bummer to see a character like Plagueis be crammed into the position that he was crammed into so that the story is very limited by the movies timeline.

A very good point that is often overlooked.
Not to mention Palpatines eventual resurrection depended heavily on cloning.
Plagues did obtain immortality in his last moments of life. He shape shifted to become jar jar binks to exact his revenge on sidious

I've said it before, I'll say it again (and this is not necessarily in line with modern or EU canon, just my theory)
Plagueis obtained immortality through essence transfer, but it can only happen if he is killed by a powerful force user, and he can jump into his killer's body at the moment of death. I believe Plagueis tricked Palp into killing him, and took his body. Ultimately he wanted to transfer into Skywalker DNA, since Plagueis is responsible for the Skywalker lineage. As Palp, he groomed Anakin for the same reason, but ultimately decided not to jump into Anakin's destroyed, limbless agonizing body... Instead keeping him around to do his bidding. Years later he attempted to seduce Luke into killing him... Think about allllll the dialogue between Sidious and Luke in ROTJ... it's 95% "kill me, Luke". He was trying to get killed so that he could jump into LUKE!
I don't believe that Sidious died after Vader threw him either. If a death happens off camera, it's not confirmed. I do believe he escaped, and what is missing between episode 6 and 7 is Sidious grooming, seducing and then essence transferring into Snoke. And to jump fwd a bit, What was the last thing Snoke accomplished? To be killed by.... A SkyWalker! Who he groomed for years and years, and meticulously orchestrated the events leading up to the scenario to make it happen.
Plagueis=Sidious=Snoke=Kylo... He really was the wise! And he really has cheated death.
Oh Mighty Lore Master, I'm nowhere near as knowledgable as you in this field but I've built upon this theory ever since ROTJ and noticing how much Sid wanted Luke to kill him. I'd love to have you weigh in on it.
I originally liked the Snoke = Plagueis theory but then came to really dislike it after I realized some of the others were better (my favorite was the Snoke = Vitiate theory), but man, this comment makes me really hope this is true. That'd be downright awesome haha

@@danablett I know the feeling, I feel kinda like the fact that we have a main canon and Legends canon allows fans to come up with their own alternate canons for themselves. For example, regardless of the outcome of Episode 9, I'll always imagine that an empire like the Fel Empire rises from the First Order, as the Fel Empire is one of my favorite parts of Legends.

I think George Lucas was going to give more of Plageuis to us in his sequels, the scripts of which he left them to produce, but they stupidly threw out and did TFA instead.
He would never have been able to actually “bring himself back from death” , he could just stop himself from dying. That’s what would have been anyway. He would have healed himself by messing with his own midichlorians just as he tried to do when Palpatine actually killed him. He just hadn’t had enough practice & experience yet to be advanced enough with it to actually overpower Palpatine’s attempts to kill him with his attempts to heal himself.
Imagine being so petty to give up immortality to not have to share your toys with anybody.

This is a pretty definitive answer for a good question. At the most basic level, it just boils down to timing--Palpatine was forced to make the decision the night before he was expected by his Sith Master to appoint him Co-Chancellor. That appointment would have likely brought many problems to Palpatine's own vision of how to assume control of the galaxy, yet he had very little time to act. Ultimately, he sacrificed knowledge of Plagueis' quest for immortality in order to secure his grip on the Republic and, later, the Empire.

It works because it works. Lightsabers aren't meant to be a technology that can be replicated in real life. They're partially a form of magic, one based on creating a bond between the user and a powerful object connected with the natural world, usually the kyber crystals, though some very clever force users managed to use things like glass shards or certain technology. This bond is then enhanced via the "frozen beam" technology from the far reaches, creating what we know as a lightsaber.
Its a beam of plasma powered by a battery and focused by a crystal, both of which are contained in the hilt.
Would’ve it been cool if Plaugeis was the villain in the sequels? The Sith Lord who cheated death, and with palpatine gone, could rule the galaxy as he saw fit? I’d pay some serious coin to see that series.

The thing I love about your channel...you post both canon AND Legends content, but you specify at the beginning where your source material is coming from. I've had to unfollow quite a few channels because they don't bother to differentiate between the two and I cannot support that as it will only lead to confusion among casual "fans", who are now Lucasfilms target audience instead of the fans, and that confusion will only lead to Star Wars getting further dumbed down for the masses. Thank you for posting responsibly! Now if only more channels would do so...

In the original concept of the story, Plageuis wasn't so soft in wanting to share power with his student. He had created Anakin on purpose after somehow choosing Shmi Skywalker. Then planned to take Anakin as his more permanent apprentice. Aka he was going to kill Palpatine when he was no longer useful. Somehow, Palpatine figured it out.
Got scared, and "decided he had learned all that he could from Plageuis" as the original Wookiepedia article had once said back in the day. This was a few years after Revenge of the Sith. Before the Darth Plageuis novel. When the concept for the character made him even more ruthless than Palpatine. Palps probably didn't like coming to know that he was just a means to an end.
Like his relationship with Dooku, with Dooku being subservient and only a placeholder. Plageuis was using Palpatine as a placeholder for a much more powerful student. But he underestimated Palpatine in the end. I wish we had seen that Plageuis. It would have made him even darker than he already is in the novel.
In fact when that article was written, it also said that a Darth Plageuis novel was supposed to have been written back then. But they felt a backstory for Palpatine would "ruin the mystique" surrounding him. In the end though they did write the novel. With the exception of the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Plageuis' novel was the best of the Expanded Universe.
Bane would have been proud.

The apprentice also knows when he kills his master, becomes the master, then takes on an apprentice of his own, that apprentice will try to kill him at some point. Just part of sithdom.

Sidious wasn't waiting for a moment when Plagueis let his guard down, he was waiting for the right moment politically. He even told Plagueis when he was killing him that he could have let him die instead of saving him when he almost got assassinated, but that he still had secrets to learn so he saved him. He even makes it clear that he was manipulating Plagueis when he was still an apprentice. Sidious killed Plagueis in the manner that he did for effect and timing, not because he needed an "oppurtunity" when Plagueis is weak or something. It's all pretty clear in the book. Sidious could have gotten rid of Plagueis for a long time by then, but chose not to. Also, the "secret" of immortality was not lost with Plagueis. Sidious was present for the many resurrections of that rival Sith lord and while not gifted with manipulating the midichlorians like Plagueis, he was well aware of and took part in those machinations. Their combined efforts literally made anakin. I like Plagueis but man people need to stop making characters seem like more than they are. At any rate, the rest of the video was good, thanks for the content.

Well, that took a lot of guts on Palpatine's part to give up immortality just to avoid being a figurehead forever in the shadow of his master.
They shouldn't have brought back Palpatine in IX, they should have brought back Plagueis. Ageless, watching and waiting for the better part of a century, knowing Sidious's empire would eventually fail and leave an easy power vacuum to fill.
