My whole life, Ive asked mechanics about doing this for me on myriad engines, with high mileage - usually they didnt want to do it. Generally, shops just want the simple answer one size fits all recommendations for you to just take their word for it - You probably should just "replace" the engine. Im glad you show how to do this yourself. We are definitely at a point in history where no-one wants to do hard research or diagnostics - thereby making the adage: "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. " Thank the Lord for youtube!

I haven't had the experience with outside shops because I have never asked. I do tend to be the do-it-yourself guy. But I can understand that some of these methods are not frequently used. It takes time to go through the work and replacing parts can be an easier route.
This leakdown check can provide a lot of information. The compression check can also be very good. In some ways it could be better since it runs the pistons through the full length of the stroke.

Cool. I ran this test on a Honda 250X dirt bike which help diagnose oil use and an incorrectly installed seal from the dealer. Nice job

Thanks, it's a good tool. I've only used this one a few times, but very helpful. Glad your dirt bike was fixed.
