Clint Bowyer Drops Slur at Darlington and Mike Joy and Kyle Petty Awkwardly Address Comment on Air

- Clint Bowyer has served as a race analyst on the Fox NASCAR broadcast since 2021. In that time, he's also adopted a certain role, which some might consider the class clown with his on-air joking and sometimes off-the-wall remarks.
On Saturday at Darlington, the former Stewart-Haas Racing driver joined Mike Joy and Kyle Petty in the broadcast booth and watched the different throwback cars making their way around the 1.36-mile track during practice. When Ty Gibbs drove by in the No. 54 car, which had a throwback to Bobby Labonte and the JGR car that featured the colors of the Washington football team his grandfather coached to three Super Bowl titles, Bowyer shared his feelings on the scheme.
And that's when things took an awkward turn.

Sorry, but the name of the team was Redskins when Joe Gibbs was the coach. As a Native American, I don’t consider the term a slur. Pretty sure only white politicians do.

Thank you sir. I agree 100%. We move on and learn from our past. But we don’t need to shy away from the history either. I never thought of the name being racist. If I’m wrong I’m sorry. But people today are so soft. Everyone is afraid of offending someone and we always have to be on guard with what we say. The Washington Redskins were a historic team and had superbowl championship seasons.

This commentary is off base. I'm pretty much done with the true intolerance displayed on sites like this. What if we all tried to get along and actually recognized the real problems we have and not these manufactured ones.

In 2016 (iirc) there was a big survey of natives and over 90% weren't offended by "slur".
The truth is this came out of college. Probably by white girls. Think of the term LatinX. Latinos and latinas hated it.

I totally agree he didn’t say a slur. He spoke the name of the football. Too bad all these woke people make such a big deal out of things that aren’t. I still call that team the Redskins I will always called the Redskins. My high school mascot is an Indian. Some people who didn’t even graduate from the school wanted to change it thank goodness the community and from rallied and made sure it was not changed.

My mom was a Redskins fan, not a Commanders fan. She passed before the name change, so it's Redskins to me.

I'm Native American, and I feel that this is an example of people being too sensitive. You have to keep in mind that Washington was named the Redskins for the grand majority of it's existence, and he simply said the older name of the team.

I am not particularly fond of Bowyer as a commentator but in his defense, Joe Gibbs did not coach the Washington Commanders, he coached the Washington Redskins!
I feel the use of the word slur, should be used towards those who purposely are being racist talking down to another person of color. Bowyer most of his life, Washington was named Redskins. It's like people who refer the WWE as the WWF still at times. It's what we always remembered growing up. Names change yet habit takes time to adjust. I wouldn't to get beefed up about it as Bowyer was innocent of harmful attack towards Native Americans.

Mike joy said redskins today. And they were litterally called the redskins for most of our lifetimes. Clint is a great boost of energy in the booth and I dont think most people find anything in his commentary offensive.

The most popular football team in the infield every weekend is the REDSKINS. Joe Gibbs had a huge hand in what Nascar is today. You're just riding coat tails and now you just cut off half your base. Indigenous people of this country may find the term offensive but it was never used as a slur at any point of history. It is not comparable to the n-word and never was....growing up in all my years I heard white people use the n-word but I never heard one person use the term "Redskin" outside of the football franchise. Not one. In fact, the Indigenous people who I have spoken to said the term "Injuin" was way more close to a slur than the term "Redskin" but admitted they did not care to be called either term. I was okay with the name change personally....wish they could have got Red Wolves over the Commanders.
