I saw Chitty the other day at the Warbirds & Wheels museum at Wanaka, New Zealand. She's on display there until April 30th, lent to the museum by her owner Peter Jackson. It was amazing to see the original Pierre Picton car in the flesh. Well worth the trip.
i have had a ride in this car its fantastic there were 5 chittys made in total one was the car in the film which was the road chitty ,one was the speed boat one but does not exist now another one was the flaying one ,and one which was attached to a trailer
I read there were two driveable ones. One was a little smaller than the other. I also heard the drive on them were modern. Like they had a v6 engine and stuff. There was one that was a driveable boat and the one in the scene where the water is coming up on it, That one was only used in that scene. That is just some info i read on it.
wow! cool they did that loud long beeping noise there too, they did it when i saw her. god everytime i see the real car i would cry with joy if i wasent emotionally constipated : (. thanks for uploading this
@0812201 Thank you, again, for correcting me on the Gentleman's name who designed the engine for one of the most beloved automobiles built in our time; Mr. Alan Mann Racing. This particular video of Mr. Pierre Picton saying what he said about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is unique. I've always been impressed that he stays right with the story and maintains the correct reality about the car and his endeavor to keep her alive. An automobile that 'Truly' works as a piece of art that works. =^.^=
To answer your questions. GEN22 was built under licence by MGM to promote the film when it came out, as GEN11 had be intrusted to Pierre Picton. In the video they describe the car as 1 & only, but there is an exact twin of GEN11 & that's GEN22, which ISNOT a replica. And my friend bought Chitty at Auction in November 2011 in Manchester for an udisclosed figure, he is the 4th owner of the car, the last onwer spent £50,000 on having fabric wings fitted complete with Propellers.
There is only 2 of them left now, as MGM destroyed them. GEN11 resides in New Zeland with Sir Peter Jackson, Beaulieu National Motor Museum own one of the cars from the water scene, engineless, shorter & has an aluminium exhaust pipe. A Friend of mine owns GEN22 the exatc twin of GEN11, but with fabric wings, instead of Fibreglass. GEN22 IS THE ONLY MGM APPROVED Chitty in Europe, as she was built to promote the film.
I have this information as a friend of mine owns GEN22, so obviously he was given the information about the Chitty's. GEN11 - New Zeland with Sir Peter Jackson. GEN22 Privatley owned by my friend, she's normally kept @ Bo'ness Motor Museum. Then there is 1 of the prop Chittys, at Beaulieu, shorter, aluminium exhaust, no engine & different radiator grill. Beaulieu also have the 1908 Humber (Truly Scrumptious's car)
That's because in the film, the sounds of a Hispano-Suiza were dubbed onto the soundtrack. So in real life (as you could imagine), the car itself has a Ford V6 3-litre engine.
Aye GEN 11 is the original Chitty. Sold in 2011 to a buyer in the USA, then sold again to a buyer in New Zeland. But as I said GEN 22 is the ONLY MGM Approved Road Legal Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in Europe.
Strange because the engine of the car in the film sounds exactly as engines did in pre WWI autos, like a tractor really, instead of a 1960's vintage. There were several of these made for the movie and just like the American Batmobile, everyone claims to have the "original".
@DeWina512 Yeah it does. GEN22 which is at Bo'ness Motor Museum has a Ford Capri 3l V6 & built on a Ford Transit chassis. Weighs 2000kgs (2ton) & is 17ft Long by 6ft wide, by 6ft tall.
@0812201 Unless you're squeamish, Chitty isn't necessarily an Edwardian car. It was built by Alan Mann Racing in 1967 prior to the film. What's more, the car itself, as explained in the video, is fitted with a 3-litre Ford V6 engine. So, the sounds of an Edwardian Hispano-Suiza would've been dubbed onto the soundtrack.
where did he pick it up? auction? considering theres 2 of em left lol... and theres like 7 billion people in the world.. whats the chance you know. lol
2nd Part of Pierre Picton Quote: "But now, as before, the actual engine is an early Essex Competition, Ford Essex Competition which, uh, 3 litre, and put together by (???) Racey? ; Ford's Racing Manager in the 1960's. And I've owned Chitty for over thirty-three years. It's a very nice; and I'm very honoured, to own the actual motorcar from the film. It's "Fantasmagorical", and Thank-you very much. Good-bye."
1st Part of Pierre Picton Quote: "...as you know, this is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and, uh, I drove Chitty at the beginning of the film, number 3, in the race; I'm racing along there, and then to avoid the child who rushed across the race track, I avoided the child, skidded, crashed, and caught fire. And then, after that, Jeremy and Jemima found Chitty in Mr. Coggin's scrap yard. And then then the magic started. Jeremy and Jemima; and that's the wonderful story."
Only GEN 11 was saved by Pier Picton. GEN 11 is now in New Zeland. There is only 1 Road Legal Chitty in Europe. GEN 22, privatley owned & on display at Bo'ness Motor Museum. She's 17ft long, weighs 2tons & has a Ford Capri 3l V6 Engine. She even hase her own Facebook page, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - GEN 22
I wonder how many MPG Chitty gets? Also, is it petrol or diesel or.....? How FAST can it go, assuming it was once a racing engine? Sure is a gorgeous car. I would love a ride in it. Do they do rides?
so there were 11 oroginal ones made for the flim.. 10 now cause 1 was destroyed in the water scene- so of the 10 left can anyone tell me what has happend to em? did the very oroginal one sell to peter jackson.
FordFalcon1962nBlue Actually there were 7 made for the movie. Here are there locations: GEN 11: New Zealand Flying Car and "Extra" Car: Florida GEM 11 and Aluminum Car: England Hovercraft Car: Destroyed after filming. Snake Horn and Windshield lamps used on GEN 22. Racecar Chitty: Rebuilt into second Chitty.
ye it was sold recently but the car in the video is never going to be for sale the the guy who owns chitty turned down Michael Jackson's offer for the car the car that was for sale was in America
and another one was made out of aluminium and that was only featured in the film for 30 and a spare one seconds there are only 5 cars survive to day the road car witch is in the video .cars of the stars motor museum.has one one is privet owned .the flying car with the propellers on it is in America and the stage show company are using one to promote the musical
its funny that peter jackson owns 1 and your friend owns the other one.. considering i met like 5 people who said they had the other one GEN 22.... so i really cant say who is telling the truth sorry. lol.

I have this information as a friend of mine owns GEN22, so obviously he was given the information about the Chitty's.

GEN22 which is at Bo'ness Motor Museum has a Ford Capri 3l V6 & built on a Ford Transit chassis.
