Fun fact: the band started out as a support group in college so his three best friends (the two guitarists and bassist) could help him with sobriety after a long dependency on drugs (which is also the inspiration for this song and a good portion of their stuff). I believe he said he started doing drugs at like 13, and his friends in college started the band with him and started touring pretty early into the band's existence just so they could all keep an eye on him and be there for him when he would struggle. That's why if you see interviews with them you can tell that they are really close.

Ans he's been sober ever since. Over 8 years now. I think he was just doing them to fit in and outgrew them when he realized he wasn't truly addicted. Like this song, he was chasing drugs and women to feel better about his insecurities. Him and hail the sun are huge inspirations, super underated and not known.
I’ve always wondered why he does all that with his mouth. I met him in person and while talking to them he always chewing something and seemed a little on an edge
Donovan is seriously unmatched when it comes to his vocals and drum skills. Hail the sun is so under rated to me. One of the best bands and lead vocalist!

i saw hail the sun in detroit on tour with periphery and dance gavin dance and donovan played drums and did vocals for a few songs LIVE, it was absolutely incredible

I have seen them live. Its really impressive. A high energy performance with good vocals. I also met the band afterwards. He was such a nice guy. He took my poster and got the whole band to sign it.

Great pick patrons! Hail The Sun is an amazing band. 🤘🏼 He'll play and sing some songs but then go to strictly vocals for the rest of the show and another drummer steps in

When they first started touring he did the drumming and singing for everything but Dead Messages. Blew me AWAY.

I've seen them live twice. He does both live and he's flawless. The first time I saw them in OKC in 2016 he did the first half of the set doing both, then had one of their booth guys come up and do a couple songs on the drums so he could frontman (they asked the guy to be their booth guy and tour with them after seeing the guy do a drum cover on youtube) and then he took the drums back and finished the set doing both again. Fucking incredible

Should check Louis Cole from ClownCore, easily one of the weirdest things you’ll ever see when it comes to drumming. They just finished their blue van album, Louis also does some live drumming for his band Knower.

I met the whole excluding the bassist and tour drummer but they were all amazing ass people ! Proud to say their albulm cover and symbol is my first tattoo. They mean so much to me.
If I'm not mistaken he is at The Pus Cavern in Sacramento. That's where Cake recorded their first two albums and also where I had the privilege to record a few times as well. Hell of a room!

Seen him with the suns and with stolas once at a bar in front of about 8 people. There is a very good music scene tied to this band here. A bunch of the same pool of musicians playing in several bands. A lot of cool interesting rock music.

Love this guy and what he does! I think his unconventional drumming is rather tasteful. The band is sporadic so the drums have to fit though he does it in an interesting way. The fact he sings and screams as well is just phenomenal. One of my huge musical idols.

If you dig post post hardcore drummers who do vocals while drumming live you need to do Aaron Gillespie Underøath. They’re one of the biggest and older bands of this style.

I'm not sure if the drum setup was a consequence of the stands he had available when they shot this (maybe they were broken?) because he's definitely lowered it in his recent vids. Who knows?
check out Satanic Surfers. Rodrigo Alfaro is also drummer and singer at the same time. And than listen to their album 'Going Nowhere Fast'. This level is just ....

for live shows he usually plays all the insane songs while playing drums, but switches to using a road-drummer for the softer songs that get the ladies lol

Also Aaron ain’t a high tenor doing the difficult vocal lines that Donovan does with a mix of screams and cleans. Aaron is a low tenor and his vocal melodies aren’t as complicated to do while drumming. I am a huge fan of underoath, but Donovan is insanely talented.
hail the sun is not popular as much as it deserves.
Think Donovan is good? Check out the bands stage drummer, Allen Castilias, who I feel is a better drummer.
No he isn't singing and playing at the same time. Not at that quality.
Never been a fan of that type of teenage boy sort of vocals kinda spoils the listening experience for me but drumming is incredible. Very creative and dynamic.
