well, he does play stuff that no other human can play, hes an alien, hes always been known to separate his left and right sides in time signatures and seeing it live is totally mind boggling
I attended to one of his masterclasses two years ago. Virgil demonstrated this part. It totally blew my mind. There' s no one on the planet who can play like Virgil does
60 years old and better than pretty much anyone on this planet. Virgil is not human. Been a fan of his since the mid/late 80's seeing him gigging about Melbourne. I laugh at how he wanted to jam on ideas w/ DT on Dream Theater staple tracks. That's just how Virgil is. Always wanting to push the musical limits of already very technical music. A true legend & envelope pusher of the instrument. Kudos Virgil!
Michael Kay Come a ling way from his days with Loose Change at The Grainstore Tavern and that band was unbelievable,to think we could see him there every Tuesday night,we were spoilt, his talent was just too much for his hometown if Melbourne, nothern suburbs boy like me just with 10 times the talent lol.
"just gonna play a bit tuh.... bass thing" okay.... "bass and drum thing..." okkay..... "it's in 13" oookkaaaaayyy.... "with a double stroke accented pattern..." on the hands? mad-ass bass riff plays ok.. Plays accented kick with feet. Ok, I'm done.
My coworker walked in my office, listened for a minute watched the spectacle of Virgil on You Tube and said, that is the best fucking drummer I have ever heard or seen who is he? I laughed.... Virgil Donati the unknown best drummer that would have made Buddy shit his pants!
You really can't be a better drummer than Virgil. He might not be as rich as Ringo, but he was a monster 30 years ago and he's been improving ever since.
what amazes me is his anticipation as to where the pattern is going to come around full circle- he pushes unlimited beat combinations on the fly and still manages to stay within the pattern ( i'm speaking of the bass guitar pattern) - has to be alot of trust between himself and the bass player
Amazing. I love the type of artists Sabian attracts, so top shelf and just professional. Wish he would dump DW though lol. Never once like the sound of their kits, way too hollow and flat. He would do so much better with Tama as an artist. But nice video, those doubles sounded crazy with this style of music.
just came here to see a demonstration and explanation of his foot technique. What I realized is that you don't simply watch a video of Virgil for some basic stuff like foot technique. You gotta be very advanced already to even understand what he's doing and even then you won't just get an easy explanation but rather an application of said technique within a very difficult environment.
I just realised he's not only playing doubles on the kick .. at that tempo... but also with certain accents on them too... Maybe if I slow it down to like 0.25 I might be able to understand what's going on >__< haha. Actually 0.5 works- now I'm following.
I don't know if anyone has notice, but Virgil use way less double bass since his switch to DW. He started incorporating a whole new series of phrasing where he would usually fill with doubles on the bass and arrange over that.
Typical Virgil video. He sat there, doing his thing, explaining it, I watched it all the way, still have no idea what's going on, leave video with a weird mix of awe and frustration
If Virgil says about something "It's Really hard " then I must assume that no other human is able to play it.
Hahaha. Amen to that. 😂
That is 100 % correct! Australia has some Monster players come out of their waters. Literally AND Figurtively!

Nicely put my friend.
well, he does play stuff that no other human can play, hes an alien, hes always been known to separate his left and right sides in time signatures and seeing it live is totally mind boggling
haha yep...
This is what happens when you devote your life to a single purpose. You achieve greatness.
It also helps when you're exceptionally gifted.
@@Colinl3052 what exactly do you mean by gifted

must feel awfully alone, all the way up there, all by himself

@@Jellybeantiger I was there every Tuesday night! Great to see the hometown boy made good!!
Nothing against Mangini, but I think Virgil in Dream Theater would have been much more interesting.
i smiled when he said: "... at this tempo it's very hard to push those accents out, but we'll see what i can achieve today..."
"just gonna play a bit tuh.... bass thing"
okay....
"bass and drum thing..."
okkay.....
"it's in 13"

ok..
Plays accented kick with feet.
Ok, I'm done.
virgil donati is incredible, so unpredictable the way he plays
He plays at another level. Unreal.
My coworker walked in my office, listened for a minute watched the spectacle of Virgil on You Tube and said, that is the best fucking drummer I have ever heard or seen who is he? I laughed.... Virgil Donati the unknown best drummer that would have made Buddy shit his pants!
Sei troppo forte Virgil, volo quando suoni😀
It's just a bass thing... He says at the beginning 😂😂😂 I love Virgil Donati !!
You really can't be a better drummer than Virgil. He might not be as rich as Ringo, but he was a monster 30 years ago and he's been improving ever since.
Living Legend!
What an absolute BEAST!
this beyond comprehensive playing is very advanced techniques
Freestylin Rudiments ! Mr Donati ! Your a freak of Nature , and I love it! "

Super cool but I understood nothing! :D
Samuli Federley Me too 😨
For us humans, that is the reality
Virgil demonstrating Matter Of Factly why he is The Master and we are The Student

Unreal...a drum legend for sure
An utter maestro.
Not human. Wowwww.

He is too good, I am a decent drummer but couldn`t learn his stuff in a lifetime
I couldn't learn this in 8 lifetimes. And with 16 limbs. Virgil is a monster.
I started to practice the traditional grip but my finger is so hurted what should I do?
Phenomenal playing !!!
His drums sound soooo....”waxy”??? It’s amazing.
Smooth, solid, malleable... I’d say that’s a perfect descriptor. “Waxy” it is!
This is Brilliant!!
What the actual f**k🧐🧐. That was incredible 🙏
BEAST!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Tank you.
So so good
That groove had such a deep pocket.
This is the man who can "drop the mike" and that mike will bounce doing doubles with ghosted accents.
Anthony Crawford on bass?
It might be...sounds like him to me.🍻👊🏻
Yeah... That was a jam between Virgild and Anthony that was upload on youtube in 2013 if I am not wrong... Impro in 13/16 time signture...
m.ruclips.net/video/yuM-ejtkXC8/видео.html the link of that video
Too good.
Still a BEAST. Period.
omg what a monster
Awesome !!
Virgil has turned drumming into advanced calculus
You go boyieeeeee!!!!
this method makes two padels have dynamic more than single ,single switch.
Virgil. one word😀😀
What hi hats is he playing?
Great!!!!
Whoa!
Es el mejor de los mejores jejeje
monstrooo!!!
This is a wizard
I normally don't say this but, he makes it look soooo easy! I can barely see the 2nd stroke.
Supposedly there's a 1 in there somewhere. Apparently only he knows where it is.
Monster :)
Virgil = GOD.
Theres only one virgil donati...no one can replace, copied or clone him!!
How? Those are his feet!!

Very good but it would be nice if he were to explain the doubles technique.Looks like dadda-mamma .
MacMic333 you can watch Thomas LANG videos 😉 Good work 😎
He's out of this world ... 🤔
Holee sheet

Any drummer at double speed would be Virgil Donati.
13?! Most musicians can't count past 4. lol
Well alright then.
If he demo'ed this to Julliard students they wouldn't be able to play it.......
So unfair.
omtfg.........
Why does he mostly play in odd times , its ok once in awhile but i find he does it to much
