The first ever companion departure. The real reason Carole Ann Ford left the show was she got tired of screaming and was promised character developement for Susan showing her alien side which sadly didn't materialise. But this was a very sad and emotional scene i agree and one of William Hartnell's most iconic speeches saying goodbye to Susan. I have to say though he could had left her a shoe 😊.
Great reaction to one of the most iconic episodes ever. No matter how many times I see the end of this episode I find it equally moving every time. I loved your comment about the silent movie style music, you're so right but I'd never thought of it like that before. :D
This is a great ending to a fun story. It's a real shame that the writers didn't give Susan more growth during her run, which is why she left. They seem to have learned their lesson, though, as i feel that the next young companion is written much better right away. But you be the judge when we get there. As a fan of the extended Doctor Who media, I should say that Big Finish has done several great returns to this time period with later Doctors. The 5th Doctor returns briefly to The Dalek Invasion in "The Mutant Phase," but on a different part of the planet. The 6th Doctor spends a little time here in "Masters of Earth". And the 8th Doctor returns to visit Susan about 20 years after the war in "An Earthly Child". There's also the great John Peel novel "Legacy of the Daleks" that tackles the same meeting of Eight and Susan in a completely different way. All are great fun and well worth experiencing.
That ending is hard to watch. It makes me very cry. It also makes me mad. Susan is only 16 years old. I have a daughter who is 14 and I could imagine her grandpa ditching her with a much older man with only one shoe. Most parents would be horrified.
To be honest not sorry to see Susan leave as I found the character very hyper in her reactions and jarring. To me season 2 proper starts from now on as Planet of Giants and Dalek Invasion were both recorded at the end of the first season before the break between season 1 and 2. I just find the stories for the rest of this season seem different and Hartnell more relaxed.
Carole Ann Ford was promised a lot more than what she got. Apart from a bit of An Unearthly Child, Sensorites, and Aztecs, she is woefully underused and relegated to human reaction stereotyping. It's no wonder Carole relinquished the role, but she definitely makes the most of what she did get. Indeed, look at her final scene with David. Her acting is really good, especially with her angst.
A great ending to the story & an emotional goodbye.
Hope you all enjoy the reaction!

That Hartnell speech really is good... Carole Ann Ford rocks it for Susan's leaving scene. Good stuff...

SUSAN's age is uncertain but in reality Carole Ann Ford was 23 and a mother plus was cheered off screaming and tripping over every week
LOVE a genuine reaction

The ending still makes me emotional, the space end titles aswell rounds off Susan’s run as she settles on Earth 🌏
❤
