Railway strike: How will Canadians pay the price of a shutdown?

  • Freight trains across Canada could come to a grinding halt as soon as Thursday, with nearly 10,000 railway employees nearing a looming strike or lockout date.
The union representing thousands of workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPK), says it has served a 72-hour strike notice to the railway.
Meanwhile, CN Rail has issued a notice that it intends to lock workers out at the same time if an agreement or binding agreement isn’t reached.
As Anne Gaviola reports, the federal government is warning that the cost of a railway strike would be “borne by all Canadians.”

"How will Canadians pay?" Why is it always people who have to make up the cost of what private owners and or the government should be responsible for? Are you not tired of blaming the citizens for the failures of those who's job is to administer the nation?

That is just 1 product that is shipped by rail . People dont realize how many things are shipped by rail or what the impact of a strike/lockout would be or what the effects would be or how many ways it would affect every Canadian and how quickly those effects would be felt and how long it takes to reverse those effects . Don't prices go up when their is a shortage of OIL and GAS, they tend to drop sharply, for food products wasting in silos!!!
And let's not forget the cost of fuel, it's in the USA hands or the repairs to the tracks, caused by overloading the 3 mile trains, leading to derailments, just check their track records, way worse then Canada's records, for repairs!!!

If they take away the work rest rules and hold away pay, they could literally keep workers away for a week at a time without returning home or seeing their families. Thats not what these guys signed up for when they took the job.

Unions should pay attention to why lay offs are often. Business can;t afford higher wages. All this does it drive up inflation which hurts us all. So companies like GM and JD and Ford go to mexico...now no jobs at all people.

you know nothing. this is about work/life balance
On the table, its mostly rest (railroads are irresponsibly running trains at all hours) and forced movement to other cities/provinces. you're on call 24/7 and its shift work. dangerous job, very dangerous. they arent paid close to enough and havent had much wage increases since the 80s. most workers are broken down by retirement and family separations are the norm

The water treatment plants that supply drinking water for 95% of Canadians use liquid chlorine , it can only be shipped by rail , most plants only have about 2 weeks supply at any given time due to safe storage regulations .
Even if it could be shipped by transport trucks do you have any idea how many trucks and drivers that would take aside from the fact that no one would want all those trucks filled with liquid chlorine on the roads and that's just 1 of the dangerous chemicals that are shipped by rail every day not to mention all the other products other than chemicals .
People dont realize how many things are shipped by rail or what the impact of a strike/lockout would be or what the effects would be or how many ways it would affect every Canadian and how quickly those effects would be felt and how long it takes to reverse those effects . It takes a week to fix/reverse the effects caused by 1 day .
