As a watercolor and acrylic painter, when I first tried (yes, tried. It was for a group project) I was scared. Had to paint literally outside the school at the bus stop 😂😂😂
I HATED using oil paints. For time I used it (for an art showcase painting project by an art school I’ve gone to), I had difficulty finding the rhythm and I honestly wanted to quit. It be the only time I ever have to work with it. Don’t intend to use it EVER AGAIN. And we painted inside.
@@siiimplymyuh I wish I had your patience 😭 oil paints look so pretty when other people use it but my brain can't wait (and I don't have anywhere to safely use it at home)
Bob Ross but with no information about oil painting and skill issue (but fr man respect to you for trying oil painting without knowing anything about it😭)
Honestly I can't blame you, me and my friend tried to follow a painting tutorial and it was asssss. Those painters practice witchcraft or something idk how they make it so perfect
The thinner is the source of fumes. The oil paints themselves don't actually give off fumes because they're just linseed oil mixed with pigments. The paints are still toxic because most of the pigments that are used are toxic AF though there are exceptions to that. Some earth pigments are literally just refined dirt. Very specific parts of very specific dirt but still. But assume all pigments are toxic just to be safe. So make sure to take your paint thinner to chemical waste. NEVER throw it down the drain. It wreaks absolute havoc on the environment as well as people's health. Also if anyone is curious about the spontaneous combustion, that happens because linseed oil doesn't literally dry. It polymerizes through an oxidation reaction which is exothermic meaning it releases heat. But that reaction also happens more quickly when it's warmer. So as you can imagine, a little ball of crumpled up tissue that has linseed oil on it is releasing heat next to more linseed which is speeding up the reaction which releases more heat until it can combust. To prevent this, just lay out your rags flat and out of the way of heat (including sunlight) until its hard. Might take up to a few months. Don't be tempted to just light it on fire in a controlled setting because as mentioned earlier, the pigments are toxic. It's bad for the environment. If you decide to ignore that and still do it, at the very least wear a respirator with a filter that can handle heavy metals as well as toxic organic compounds and make sure there are no animals around. Think of the smoke as being lead fumes. You wouldn't want to breathe in lead, so you don't want to breathe in this. That should cover the basics of oil paint safety I think... Honestly, just look into less toxic alternatives like water soluble oil paints (I hear Cobra by Talens is pretty good) or just steer clear of them altogether if you don't absolutely need the specific properties of oil paints.
This was so therapeutic for me because I have trauma from my high school art teacher forcing me to create FOUR oil painting per month … for those who have never done oil painting it is tedious and takes forever, I’d be lucky if I got one painting done a month. One time I almost passed out in my garage because of the fumes. I still have the dozen or so unfinished oil paintings in my parents basement and although I paint regularly with acrylic and watercolors , may never touch oil paints again for as long as I live. Quinn is a saint for even getting as far as he did and made the right choice to switch mediums👊!
I was thinking how Quinn would make a decent Scout voice actor because of the attitude in his voice. And 3:29 just seals it despite it being Mr Ludwig's leitmotif. Edit: Also 4:45, 5:44 and 5:57
Bro, you left Bob Ross crying in his tomb! XDDDDDDD Tbh, oil paints are diff to master but it's so satisfying! Also...I don't want to sound like a dr*g addict but the smell of the paints and the thinner is just so good
I know you had a hard time bc of the smell (I tried some time ago and almost died too lmao) but I loved the stream I hope you do more painting stream 💗👌 please open the window next time lol ALSO THE OTHER ONES WERE VERY PRETTY TOO

Fire n flooding at the same time? California core
1:29 i like how he says its for right handed people but realistically its a flat board that can be flipped and used the other way round

fuck oil paints
@@QuinnBenetLIVE Ah, and drying takes forever. Had to make sure nothing touched it. It was torture finding a safe place to put it
@@sarahrivera5161 I'm the opposite 😭😭 I love oil paints because it's easier to blend. Acrylic dries in like 3 seconds

the contrast from Bob of the Ross being so calm and Quinn looking so stressed was amusing
