While most manufactures place the intakes close the surface some have deep water intake as a standard. Aqua Control Inc for example makes deep water intake a standard on units and are most likely best choice for retention ponds. Some intake lengths can go down up to 30' depending on pond. Fountains are still a good choice for retention ponds but a decision need to be made wisely.

When you introduce the matts are you using established water plants or are you planting them small and letting them grow whilst using up nutrients ?
