My opinion: Unlike the case in Ethiopia, there is third party in the case of the western civilization. It is the secular elites- the philosophers that rose in the course of time and generates assertive thoughts that created divorce between the religious and political institutions. Eventually, the era of enlightenment happened in that part of the world- then overall psychology of liberal thoughts. In the case of Ethiopia, as Tsegaye R. Ararsaa said on this media, enlightenment probably is yet to come. The points Getachew is raising here worth focusing on to find the root causes of prevailing messes in the country- the marriage between the religious and political institutions since 13th century. What I disagree with is the third party Getachew has mentioned which is the role of the 'bete lihiku' or the secular elites. There is not notable secular elites in Ethiopia. Tsegaye R. Ararsa put it very well. These Elites have never been independent of the two camps, they only fake liberalism. They systematically justify the knowledge established within these camps. They are fundamentally the share holders of the benefits in the camps- as a sacrifices of the innocent people, the mass. Therefore, the existing politico-religious arrangement is an old-aged machine that has hijacked all the possible revolutions in to democracy. Therefore, either the machine must be made obsolete or the people should abandon it in every possible way. The former is for coherence whereas the latter is for fragmentation. The choice is up to the living souls for the betterment of the once to come.
I can answer why when others have gone beyond their savagery, we haven't. They've rid themselves of emperoalism/colonialism. Ethiopia is hanging on to it for dear life. If Ethiopia carries on this path any longer, it will be at her peril.
