Totally felt that crisis of identity. Being an immigrant of Middle Eastern descent, I totally get not feeling "enough" of either. I hear it so often with others as well
This is why this is my favorite band, Im Mexican, Puerto Rican, Italian, and bilingual. Who was born and raised in the states. I’ve always dealt with an identity crisis, not being Hispanic enough and not being American enough. I’ve always known my Mexican side but never really got to learn about my Puerto Rican side. But the Maria’s gives me that space where I’m free to be both sides and learn more about Puerto Rican lingo. Listening to their music gives me a sense of belonging, and teaches me that it’s ok that I don’t fit into one cultural category. And it’s ok to speak Spanglish 😂💙🌀

In my top 2 albums of all time with Room for squares from johnny mayer (after your gift comes temple of shadows from angra). I almost envy the struggle that a lot of 2nd gen immigrants have. As one myself who did not grow up with my mother tongue and doesn't speak it, where the half of my family that did lives overseas, whom I have visited only twice in my life, I feel completely detached from "half of my identity". There are remnants of their culture in my life but nowhere near 50%. If it weren't for how I looked you'd assume I was 100% australian, although I suppose you can say that about a lot of us 2nd gen immigrants who grew up here.
