    Hard drive replace & dis-assembly.
    My first shot at a tutorial video. Figured it'd be fun.
    Not entirely too enthused about how it turned out, I see where I could have done a lot better, and will hope to improve upon in future repair videos.
    I know. Probably could have done without some crude & foul commentary. But what can I do to inject my own style into my own videos?
    Also, I do see a few too many repair videos that have no commentary. Music, silence, or written word. As well as, lack dialogue about small details or warnings to watch out for while doing a repair on laptops, which could possibly be easier to destroy, than they are to fix.
    I do hope this proved to helpful in your repair endeavors.
    Views & opinions are of my own & do not reflect those of my employer.
    THANKS FOR CHECKING OUT MY CRAPPY SHIT!

    This is by far the best instructor ever on YT, information/maintenance wise.
    The cussing reminds me of working with my grandfather when I was a kid.

      My method could have been a lot better & minimized speaking outside of providing instructions. Not bad, decent first tutorial/instructional video though.

    Thanks for the video. It helped to *NOT* pull the HD on a customer's computer!!! It was suffering from BSOD, even with a live Disc. So I needed to get the drive out to backup their files....it's not worth the time and headache at $25 for the first 4GB, $10 each additional 4GB (my charge for data retrieval).

    You are awesome to film this! I sat on the phone for an hour 20 with Dell tech support trying to figure out how to disassemble my Inspiron without screwing it up and all 5 tech guys couldn't help. Finally, one guy said "go to RUclips" and there was this vid. Thanks for posting this -- it saved my bacon.

    Appreciate the vid! The guy who designed this p.o.s. should be forced to perform a hard drive replacement on this laptop every 90 minutes for the rest of his working life!

    Thank you for posting the series of three videos. Saved me from hours of frustration. What a pain in the butt just to change a hard drive. Dell never would have helped this much. Very Well Done. And thanks again!

    Thanks for the tutorial~ I did quite a number on the palm rest trying to remove it without first removing the optical drive. There were three screws securing the palm rest to the bottom side of the plastic case that could only be accessed by first removing the optical drive~ Oh well~ This was a good first try at this sort of thing

    • @lukkabaluka
      @lukkabaluka 10 лет назад +2

      It was those three extra screws!! That you had after reassembling it with the test drive~ They could not be removed without first removing the optical drive

    Haha! That's awesome! Glad to hear I was able to assist where they could not.
    That sounds very similar to where the local Geek Squad has referred their customers to my store, because they don't go anywhere near doing any kind of repairs that involve the motherboard.

  • @30leisl

    This video is pretty good . . . except that we still had hours of frustration. Nothing was said about the three little screws holding the case in on the right side over the dvd drive. We broke part of the side trying to get that off. Also, there is nothing about the fragility of the holding/locking clips for the ribbon(s) on the motherboard, particularly the one for the keyboard! We were in the dark about the locking clip particularly. This has been the most difficult part!

  • @michealstar3553
    @michealstar3553 11 лет назад +1

    There are 3 more little screws under the dvd-drive. You have to slide it out to remove those 3 screws BEFORE you can start peeling the top cover off.

  • @lukkabaluka
    @lukkabaluka 10 лет назад +1

    Another suggestion~
    Those white power connector cables for the fan, dc connection, and sound system are actually pretty tricky to disconnect... I really had to struggle with them, and worried I would break something trying to unseat them~ Maybe give a couple pointers about working with this~
    But overall, I made a lot of progress digging into a laptop for the first time. Thanks much!

    • @J4TFOI
      @J4TFOI  10 лет назад

      Was pretty sure I might have mentioned something about that. It can be super easy to mess up connectors & tabs on ribbon cables without trying.
      Finding that balance with using not enough & too much force can be aggravating at times.

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    I outright lost it somewhere into laptop first time I took it apart/put it back together. I used something to lodge the ribbon cable in place. It wasn't perfect, but it kept the ribbon cable in place.
    I found it when I took it apart again. Still used something to lodge it in place to be safe though.

    @KibaThrowsPuppies 11 лет назад

    Thank you "One Cool Guy that Does That." I've known about this laptop model for a long time and it's stupid case design. I swear it was because Dell wants you to send it to them for replacement, instead of simply opening the one panel and swapping the hard drive. >.<

  • @GabrielRodriguez-um8fi
    @GabrielRodriguez-um8fi 6 лет назад +1

    I had to upgrade the same model as yours however the configuration is kind of different. I had to remove the screen in order to remove the motherboard and get that new ssd in. Great thinking but critical thinking sure comes in handy.

  • @InternetLad
    @InternetLad 12 лет назад

    Yes, I replaced the stock HDD which failed with a 120 GB Agility 3 and it works fine.
    There is no reason you can't replace most any modern laptop's HDD with an SSD. It gives you a huge performance increase, extends battery life and runs cooler and quieter. If you can foot the bill and don't mind the outrageously hard (by comparison) swap on this model, I say do it.

  • @nojunkorspam
    @nojunkorspam 12 лет назад

    The engineer who designed this laptop needs to be fired immediately, but considering that this is Dell they were probably given a promotion (Dell's complete disregard for reliability is the reason I am forced to hate their junk products). Thank you for making Dell's miserable process a little less miserable.

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    Thought I did mention that at some point because I did end up breaking one of the clips myself. Used some random object to apply enough pressure to hold ribbon cable in place.

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    Pretty much. In a way it's like cars. The more complex it is to work on, the less likely the end user consumer will work on it. Where someone else gets paid for repairs.

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    I had actually broke a few tabs & clips on this one while working on (don't tell the customer. shhh!)
    Whatever you broke, it's also very possible to fix.

  • @corollatime
    @corollatime 12 лет назад

    thanks! I've done a Dell Inspiron N5050..It's a little easier than this one, the HDD is on top of the mobo, but still it's rediculous just to get to the hdd. Cool Vid!

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    It was a headache, but with some patience, totally doable.
    You had a bigger problem than just faulty ram causing the BSOD?

  • @J4TFOI

    If you follow the steps, you'll have full access to the fan.

  • @J4TFOI
    @J4TFOI  11 лет назад

    Hmm. Could swore I mentioned some of those points during my 3 videos.
    I did forget about the 3 screws by dvd drive on my first go at this. Cracked portion of the frame in that area. I see I forgot to put those screws back when I put it together the first time.
    And I had broke at least one of the clips holding in the ribbon cables. Oops.
    Laptops can be very notorious for their soft plastic tabs & their toughness can vary even amongst same models.

    Got stuck trying to pull the plate up after removing the key board. Wish I knew/could see how he pulled up the silver part of the plate without breaking the silver part with holes in it. Sliced my thumb in several spots just trying to lift it up and it wouldn't budge yet he just "popped it off". Seriously Dell, were you trying to make this a pain in the butt to do so people would take this to technicians? Wish I had a decent small screw driver set. Looks like that's what he uses to "pop" things out of place.

    • @J4TFOI
      @J4TFOI  9 лет назад +1

      If you have trouble removing it, you're most likely overlooking screws or tabs holding it in place.
      A few times during the videos I did things a little out of order & made note of them, so it is advised to watch a bit ahead to make sure you catch what I missed doing in order.
      Taking time & patience usually works out the worst of these laptops.
      You can get a decent small screwdriver set for less than $5.

    Yea.You have bigger problem than wifi to resolve. It could be hardware issue, or software, whether it be drivers, networking management software, firewall, or picked up something nasty blocking all of it out. If the software itself has been messed up enough, it may be best to reformat.
    At this point I'd check to see if usb/network stuff works in safe mode or Ubuntu.

    all I wanted to do is copy over 120 gig to another pc... It would take 2 hours to copy through usb, so I figured to just take out the hdd and save some time.... F*CKING DELL!

      Best to watch full videos before attempting repair. I took out all required screws to remove motherboard & replace hard drive.
      First & only time I made videos like this. Could have been better. Could have been a lot worse.
      Had I known more about video editing back then (or RUclips had its own video editor at that time) I would have edited into 1 video. Was working at a computer shop at time while doing repair & had to stop recording to interact with clients coming in.

    This guy does a definite dis-service in describing dessasembly of this computer. What he doesn't share is that the DVD drive needs to be removed in order to remove three screw in that cavity that if not removed will damage the chasis when trying to remove the keyboard bezel. He is very hap hazard and careless in his methodology which will cause a novice to likely damage their computer possibly rendering it useless.
    That said.. I agree that Dell in general.. and especially this computer SUCK as to the design and any repairs.

      +GeekyOneTwo there's a screw stuck at CD tray point. It's now impossible for it to remove cuz it's damaged. only one screw and I can't get to CPU's fan. crap.....
