Great video! Flying solo from the rear seat - is this for balance?

Yes, but wouldn't be strictly necessary if one did a new weight and balance. However I prefer flying the J-3/L-4 from the rear anyway, as for me it's easier to fly balanced and the view is better too.

Anyone care to guess if these couldn't have been launched off a cargo ship using jato bottles_ (rockets)?

This is the model of plane that landed on the USS Midway during operation “ frequent wind “ .the pilot had his entire family on board . 5 people total . I was on the flight deck that day , I saw a lot of desperate people that day .

Ronaldreganfan , Hi! Are you sure that was an L-4? I believe it was a Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog, which could be seen as a succesor to the L-4. A friend of mine has one. Fantastic aircraft, but much more expensive to operate than the Cub.
Thank you for your service and best regards from Austria.

myotherplaneisapitts As far as I can tell it is the L 4 “ grasshopper “ . But then again is has been 43 years since I was a part of that operation on the Midway . I may have a touch of “ Alzheimer’s “
