Up until ten yrs ago, I worked for a grading contractor. We did most of our own u/c work, just like you are doing there. We had a lot of old school stuff. 1952 D8, it was a tractor, not a dozer, it was a pan puller. 1982 977L, 1980 951C, 1979 D3C, 1993 D5C. Those were the ones that anyone could work on.
Now, I've been in a govt garage for the last 10 yrs. Everything has gone electronic. Even got electronic pilot controlled hydraulic valves.

The life of being an excavation contractor, be glad you are able to do the repairs yourself. Glad to see you do it right the first time by replacing everything and be done with it. In my mind if you can't repair your own equipment a person shouldn't be in the excavating business. I see some contractors where I live hire out 99% of their repairs ouch that is expensive at 90-100 per hour the shops charge.

You know, I actually enjoy U/C work..especially when I can replace with nice new parts..I love to rebuild engines as well...As a younger man i had to make things work with less worn out used parts..Now we can afford new tires ,brakes, good batteries, new mufflers, new pistons & liners, new rails, pads, rollers, idlers Sprockets ect...One day we will be able to afford paint!

Paint is only for eye candy or finding suckers to buy worn out junk at Ritchie Bros auctions LOL.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the only Cat dozer you had was a D4. By the way, it is awesome that you were so smart with your money and kept your head FAR above water compared to the unfortunate companies who could not pay their payments on their new equipments. Props to you...and that is coming from an college accounting major lol

Mate had to do same his D8H few years ago,had porta power maxed out to 110 tons, sprocket wouldn't budge, cause had a quarry, plenty access to explosives,so half a plug of geli and safety fuse loosened it with a front end loader bucket parked against the sprocket.

I use to weld them out with 3/32" 7018. Build them up over the top smack it with a hammer weld a washer to it then nut to the washer. The flux will roll out protecting the threads. After it cooks some remove with a 3/8" impact and wd40. Tap out the holes when done.

Same with the used equipment heading out from Canada to overseas. Something Mr Gangesexcavating said you don't need "New and Trendy to make money.

I know it's not in the same weight class that ur dealing with but I'm of the same thoughts as u. The old stuff is hard to beat. Iv a 1988 Hitachi UE50, serviced it on Saturday past an it's running like a new one.
If ur not prepared to get ur hands greasy ur in the wrong job!

Lol you're lucky you had the mag drill. I had to do it out in a field of cow crap in the rain upside down on a komatsu excavator.

I was not conditioned to think you can only make money with new equipment. You know, you have to get good grades, go to the big school, buy the big huse and the suv and the time share...and wake up at 70 and realize you were a slave for every one but yourself...the school, the bank, the insurance co, the IRS, the oil Co , the auto makers, should I continue or did you catch on? Funny that China and india are buying our "JUNK" to build thiere economy. while the sell the new they build to us?
