Son opéra "Mass" est un monument, musicalement et au niveau du libretto, une œuvre qui élève les âmes, les choeurs et les cœurs , les oreilles, les esprits, et même les corps si on a la chance d'y participer ! Wiesław Ochman, un tenor polonais très reconnu qui avait travaillé avec ce chef d'orchestre disait que Berstein avait été un génie. "Il (Bernstein) entendait des sons que je ne me pourrais pas imaginer qu'ils existent."
top ! en revanche le librettiste de West Side Story c'est Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim n'est "que" parolier (parce qu'en comédie musicale justement on distingue les deux^^)
Ayant comme bien des Québécois une bonne dose de sang irlandais (ou écossais, on n'est pas certain) de par ma mère et ma femme ayant une bonne dose de sang juif de par son père, j'aimerais bien qu'il y ait une East Side Story.
Yeah. That recording Of WSS which Bernstein did with Deutsche Grammophon isn’t that great. I think it was very miscast and the tempos for the most part were way on the slow side. Which is why I like the soundtrack for the Spielberg movie much much better.
@@mamascarlattiif you have ever seen the "beauty and the beast" or "the death of Klingohoffer" which are both modern masterpieces, ot does not sound operaticaly, but both are considered operas. What about Wagner and Strauss compared to whatever else at the same time? They still have written operas. Porgy and Bess is an opera which sounds better when sung by jazz singers than by opera's singers. The limit between musical and opera is very blurry, and "West side story" lies in that blur.
@@warny1978 Death of Klinghoffer sounds very good sung operatically, cannot imagine it otherwise! No idea about Beauty and the Beast, is that La Belle et la Bête by glass - I haven't heard it yet. And what do you mean about Wagner and Strauss, are you suggesting they could be sung by someone not trained in operatic singing? Wow! Wagner can defeat even some very accomplished opera singers, for example hard to find a Tristan and Isolde where both singers can manage the demands!
