      Porscha Harris Take another look at your bills, see if there is anywhere you can cut expenses. Perhaps you are still paying for cable that you hardly use because your both working? How about your phone, we have republic wireless, and pay $30.00 a month for 2 phones with them (dumped the land line). You do have to purchase the phone though. Look at your taxes, when we lived in NJ they took so much from my husbands overtime that he was better off finding another job working the standard 40 hour work week. Are you working all those hours just to see it all taxed away. Are you paying to much for convenience because your so tired after work no one wants to cook? We all do it from time to time, but it can be a habit that will eat you alive. I really do wish you the best because we have all been were your at.

    Help me understand something, why in America are people going hungry when we as a nation waste over 150 billion dollars a year throwing away good edible food. I have seen first hand how much good food is thrown away because of a small flaw or blemish that does not affect the quality of the products and why can't we be less wasteful??

    • @wolftreetree
      @wolftreetree 7 лет назад +1

      Olivia Wills I agree we need less waste I watched a program on this subject from the UK (it's affecting them as well). A better system needs to come from the larger grocery stores, now they can demand like perfect produce from the farmers, and that causes waste and excess use of pesticides as well, because near perfect fruit or vegetables do not grow naturally. The store will also only go down so much on price before they throw out product. I was working in a grocery store in the States, when one of the men from the meat department was complaining about "having to throw out a large amount of chicken" if it didn't sell that night. He said he was going to mark it down, I worked as a volunteer and would have bought the chicken if he had marked it down a lot, and would have donated it. But they did not mark it down a lot, I think the supermarkets have a policy never to mark things down past a certain level (probably there cost). What happened that day is I bought a couple of packs when they went down in price for my family. But they were still a little pricey, and there was no way I was going to purchase any to donate at there prices. At the same time the groceries are tossing out product "rather than take a loss". They pay there own workers as little as they can get by with. This happens at all the stores as far as I know.

      we have an organization that collects day old food from restaurants and grocery stores and makes hot meals to feed people in need ... the stores and restaurants love it ...it's a win win ... they get to write off donations from there tax and people in need get to eat well...

    The common theme I see when watching these videos from the comments is typically one where people blame the victims, eviscerating these ppl for falling on hard times, as if it were their fault. This is the problem in the US, we are brainwashed to think any flaw stemming from our system of predatory capitalism is the fault of the victims rather than the system itself.

      Nothing new here; age discrimination has become the norm for decades now. Employer corporations and businesses do not want to pay experienced, older employees the wages they deserve or the higher insurance premiums that insurance companies charge employers of older workers. State and Federal governments, even though there are anti-discrimination laws on both books, do little or nothing to curb the laying off of senior employees and older managers in workplaces in favor of youth. Many older workers become and remain unemployed thanks to rampant age discrimination in hiring practices that are on-going to this day. Hypocrisy abounds and creates poverty because nothing is done to stop these human-rights violations. Older workers are forced into taking early Social Security and losing at least 25% of their Social Security income for the rest of their lives. This is one of the several reasons why I want our governments to take care of our own citizens first. Both pre-baby boomers and baby boomers need justice done to recoup their lost careers and livelihoods. For shame, America. What you do to your own older citizens is one of your worst glaring hypocrisies!

    Why are people embarrassed to get food stamps? You pay taxes for a reason and with all the crap that the government pays for food stamps/Medicaid are the only times it’s used for something people really need. It is not a hand out but your own money coming back to you. These people should be crying over the Iraq war and all the other nonsense that our tax dollars are currently funding. Food stamps is something we should all be proud of as Americans because it has helped the poor and that is a good thing to do. By the way food stamps only takes up a tiny part of the government budget and that is why it makes my blood boil when they talk about cutting funding for it. You know people are truly evil when they want to take food out of the mouth of kids, the sick and elderly just to save a buck.

If you are eligible go for it, no shame if one is in need, that is what it is there for. There is a lot of fraud in it , as many who know they shouldn't get them( like illegals) do and people who get them sell them( even if they have a card that is suppose to prevent it.You get played with by the system too. The system needs a big over haul, and people need jail time.

I almost pray sometimes when I see these people screaming at low income people, trying to live, using food stamps and belittling people for using them have to walk a mile in them people's shoes. I don't wish poverty on anyone but just saying you get back what you put out..

  • @tonybanks9015
    @tonybanks9015 8 лет назад +4

    The people in this video are the exception. They've worked, and paid their taxes used to pay for food stamps for others. They may need help now, but if they are embarrassed it means that they'll find a way not to need it later. What gets me are the people who brag their food stamps paid for by the tax dollars of people who work, have kids while on food stamps (unlike the guy in the video) and use what little money they have for cigarettes, liquor, and pet food. What's even worse is they feel like they deserve food stamps not realizing that the same government that feeds them can also starve them. Food stamps are government mandated charity.

    • @wolftreetree
      @wolftreetree 7 лет назад +1

      Tony Banks One thing that does happen that is kind of a good thing about these programs like food stamps and food banks, etc, is that people who are down on there luck use them to lift themselves up out of poverty (which is what these programs are meant to do). One problem with that is that no sooner that we help one family back onto there feet, another slips through the cracks and they use the same programs and do the same thing. I think one thing better about our programs in the States compared to overseas, is at least with the food banks anyone in need can get help without needing a government referral. In other countries you need a referral by the government, so that means those like you mentioned who are living on the system get help, but those that just need a little hand don't get it. They tried it here and the middle class complained and they did away with the government referral needed because the government was using the food stamp cards instead as the referral, that was bad because a middle class family can need a hand in bad times and still not qualify for food stamps. Such things as a temporary illness and accident etc can happen to anyone and you might need a hand up at such times.

    The veteran is getting US$1600 in benefits and the wife is crying for what? They are much better off than the working poor. Sometimes I don't get it. She and her veteran hubby should not feel down because the govt is helping them. Almost all veterans who come home from a war are diagnosed with PTSD. Is it really that or the husband do not really want to work and just wants to laze around the house. Just asking. Anyway this video is nine (9) years ago and hope the present Covid-19 pandemic has not made the situation worse for the people featured here. I feel really sad for the retired white couple who lost their retirement money in bad investments and could face home foreclosure. Hope their situation has gotten better.

    OMG, these people are my husband and me! I My husband was unemployed at age 59 at the height of the recession and we lost everything. Our savings, 401Ks, Savings Bonds, the few pieces of jewelry we had and our wedding rings, etc. We had to go on food stamps (not the high point of our lives) and the house went into foreclosure. Luckily we sold it before the bank got it but the real estate market was still bleak here in CA after the real estate crash so we walked away with very little money but we were thankful to be out from under the mortgage. What we did get went towards the $120K in debt we ran up trying to hold on to our house and our lives. We're still carrying around $40K of that debt left over from the house sale. My husband finally found work this year (took 7 years) at 50% of his previous salary. Things are still very tough out there, no matter what the Right, or Donald Trump says.

    There are and have been hungry people everywhere everyday. To believe otherwise is just kidding yourself. Sad that people have been made to feel embarrassed about needing to eat. It is a crime in many cities to give food to homeless people. Few have benefited since the last recession except those at the top. I personally do not know any person who has been helped by tax cuts or supposed wage hikes that are ridiculously minimal.

Growing in a poor country...I always live in a shoestring budget...there are times we cannot buy what we want...here in our country we work only for food and nothing on else...you are lucky if you have a job at all! Thanks to our kinship culture..our families and our neighbors bond closely for us to survive the difficult times! The concept of sharing! Americans sometimes must feel the hardships to appreciate what they already have! Compared to us, they have lots of opportunities but for us, we always have to be thrifty and sometimes buy what you people called "GARBAGE" (like used clothes)...our second hand appliance stores are operational you know, we are not ashamed to be poor!

    • @wolftreetree
      @wolftreetree 7 лет назад +2

      Ifke Rawung The illegals and even the immigrants work under a completely different set of laws and rules than the American middle class. Immigrants can get interest free loans to start a business here that are unavailable to Americans, they can also run there businesses without paying income taxes for up to three years, and after those three years are up they usually have another family member take over and the clock resets. Why do you think the foreigners own so many of our businesses? They also can double or triple up in housing and usually no one hassles them about it, if an American tried this, the social workers would be at there door threatening to take there kids, I had this happen to a friend of mine she had to move to different housing because someone told on her for being one bedroom shy. They also take benefits and work under the table, they also don't worry about things like insurance payments for health and auto, because they work for cash under the table, they qualify for government healthcare, and the children get free lunches and financial aid at school. Therefore they are able to save up much more cash, which they usually send home to their families overseas.
