Copertino • Copertino (LE) • Diocese of Nardò - Gallipoli • Vicariate of Copertino.
    Description of the church:
The Sanctuary of San Giuseppe Patriarca di Copertino is an important religious building located in Copertino (LE), was designed in 1753 for the beatification of Brother Giuseppe Desa. The works began in 1754 under the guidance of the engineer Adriano Preite. The church stands in a fairly narrow space and it was necessary to tear down part of the walls, the church of San Salvatore and the miserable dwelling of woman called "la Carlangiana", this is read in an epigraph disappeared, the church was finished in 1758.
The central building is a central floor plan covered with vaults. In 1782 it was enlarged with the realization of the apse attributed to the builder Quintino Lupo (as reported by an inscription). Its interior is sober, made of elegant stucco, contrasted with a concave facade, medium elevation, but sinuous for the large modules and the carp volutes. The church has 3 altars, the main one was built in 1845 and rebuilt in 1965, by Pope Pius IX he was awarded in 1873 the privilege of altar "daily and perpetually privileged". The second altar, located on the right was dedicated to Our Lady of the Carmine, since 1930 is dedicated to the Immaculate. The third altar, on the left, was dedicated to S. Francesco d'Assisi in 1930, in the past it belonged to the church of San Salvatore, in memory of the old church demolished in 1754.
In 1930, after a long absence due to the suppression of Napoleon and the unification of Italy, the Conventual Friars Minor returned to Copertino, and they were entrusted with the care of the Sanctuary by Bishop Muller. Next to the church, the brothers of the saint built a new convent and a seraphic seminary. Inside the Sanctuary there are numerous relics of the Saint, including the heart, which arrived in Copertino da Osimo on 7 April 1953 and is kept in the Stalletta where he was born 4 centuries ago.
The Stalletta is located next to the entrance, has a shabby roof made of straw, reeds and tiles, the walls peeled, a fireplace and two wall cupboards: a miserable seventeenth-century furniture kept intact for centuries. In this stable mother Franceschina took refuge to give birth to Giuseppe Maria, the future Saint of flights. The paternal house is situated in front of the church, and remains as a historical witness the paternal house of the saint, which was transformed into a chapel after his beatification. Mamma Franceschina gave it as dowry to her daughter Livia in 1623, but she was sold a few years later. The friars of Grottella bought it in 1753.
On the left wall there is a canvas depicting Mamma Franceschina in agony (1645), assisted by her daughter Livia and the friars, while at the top of the picture her son Giuseppe, then at the Sacred Convent in Assisi, appears smiling.
