He’s always finding increasingly clever ways to add jokes that exist purely as music. The Beverly Hills theme in Airport Piano, or even his Darkside solo where he transitions into Fur Elise-which basically everyone recognizes-after he sort of feigns not having a direction to take the solo
Donnie Darko is one of those movies that we all thought was groundbreaking in our teen/college years. I think it's mostly just "Mad World" is really good, and the rest is just weird.
I'm reluctant to rewatch it in case I end up hating it as much as I did when I rewatched Dogma, another film I though was super smart and deep when I was 20
This is one of those things that I remember seeing as a kid once and it's stayed in my memory ever since. Didn't even know that Tim was the one performing it
heh the video editor left the 9x16 version on the timeline after the 16x9, and then exported it by accident and somehow no one noticed before uploading -- but i'm happy there's a thematic explanation too, cause otherwise they will take the video down to reupload the correct version
I've often wondered what that film was really about. Thanks for the explainer. It makes a lot more sense now that I know what rhymes with 6 foot rabbit
Oh I am ducking laughing so hard thanks Tim 😂 I loved Donnie darko but would have preferred a description of what just happened after first watching that film. Then they made this crazy arrogant website where u had to do weird stuff to get to the next page and find out answers. Great movie but man they can enjoy confusing the hell out of us and being arrogant. Hahaha
Hands up if you only know of mixamatoesy from either a kiwi cartoonist who drew a dog or a pink rabbit who hung around a feral punk rat, dumb dingo, moggy and Keith.
i dont get why people like this movie. a chick was talking about how it taught her about time travel and wormholes and how no one has ever done anything in entertainment about this stuff. all i thought was sci fi does that crap all the time maybe she should take her head out of the sand like an ostrich.
So strange just last week something was stirring in my head I had this irrestible urge and desperate feeling to search out Donnie Darko on the web! Immediately it was there free of charge for me to watch again and so I did take this ride with Donnie and Frank not really knowing where and when or why! Strange at a time in this present place where time lines have seemed to crossed 25 years back or so making itself known through events and memories being questioned as being true! I wonder how many people are catching onto the fact that the chords and melody are literally ripping the Gary Jules version of mad world that this film made famous
@aussiejubes it's not psychosis but if just watching the theatrical that's a fair theory. Director has made it clear its not, in fact donnie is the most sensible tapped in person in the town
Haha, this pretty much sums it up, yes! I actually like the movie, although I find it really frustrating because although the storyline does kind of make sense once you've grasped it, you end up feeling somewhat cheated by the enormous amount of contrived and convoluted world-building that was required to make it work. At a rough guess, it exceeds the usual "gimme quota" by a good 300%.
There was an entire extra-curricular part of the donnie darko lore, the book by roberta sparrow, the pilosophy on time travel, IIRC was also an interactive webpage where parts of it were available to read. Which kinda adds to the lore... and the labor involved in trying to find the meaning... I enjoyed the film for how strangely impossibly it is to grasp a meaning. Was donnie going back to his bed, innevitable? Was it part of his own dreams of death? Maybe it wasn't actually an alternate universe? who knows!
Nice song, but he got the story wrong. Donnie survives the engine falling, but he shouldn't have. The ending isn't telekinesis, Donnie has travelled back in time to that moment in order to get hit by the plane engine. In doing so he will die, which means the chain of events that lead to the rabbit and girlfriends death, never happen. Donnie realises that the reason he is sleepwalking and having visions is because he shouldn't exist. It is a dark film and in the end he realises he has to destory himself to save all the things he cares about.
Never had the faintest interest in seeing Donnie Darko before. Now I may have to see if YT has it for free... Ok, yep free w ads, cool. Weird. Weird, but good. Also, the definition for "myxomatosis" was not what I thought it'd be. Now I want to know if the Fiver cartoon is real or just part of the movie. This has turned out to be a rabbit-intense day.

I love how the Gary Jules' Mad World cover piano accompaniment makes its way into Tim's arrangement for this.

@@veronicamcghie5238yeah IIRC the director's cut has more info. If you saw the theatrical version there's a lot more ambiguity.
